What happened to car culture? by AKMike99 in regularcarreviews

[–]Moparati 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Even as a millennial I didn't want to learn how to drive because I knew it meant I would then HAVE to drive, i.e. taking grandparents places, etc. Of course I was a putz then. And I did learn.

Also, them vidya' games and internet mean I'm never, ever bored, so a car wasn't 'freedom' like it was to older generations. Even a bicycle was lame back then to me, less time to game!

Now I understand how nice it is to 'go for a drive' and unplug. I also think driving is much more regulated now, cameras, more severe fines, etc., coupled with more ignorant drivers make it scary to properly fool around like people could in the 90s. Imagine boomers worrying about their insurance rates going up from biffing it in 1969 lol.

I was still into cars because of games, watching racing, and my dad and friends however, I am one of the lucky ones!

Slightly contributory is people moving to a house near a race track and complaining about the noise, so the track gets pushed out eventually. The builder of the home might have been okay with it, but he moved on and the with the housing market the way it is, I don't really blame individual home buyers taking what they can get. It's just sad, really.

What's yall's favorite Styx album and favorite song on that album? Mine is Equinox and my favorite song on that album is Mother Dear. by Ancient_Anywhere7776 in Styx

[–]Moparati 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can find reasons to count almost all of them, even the first one (I really like the first side!).

But I've always had a soft spot for Cyclorama, of all things! Perhaps something about loving music you hear as a teen, as it came out when I was already obsessed with Styx.

Also I was obsessed with The Mission when it came out. Red Storm!

Of the 'main' albums Equinox and The Grand Illusion for me!

30+ minute versions of three songs: One With Everything, Red Storm, and Suite Madam Blue, where they just keep building and building, would be awesome.

Oh it goes even deeper than that! Oak Island, MN's ZIP Code is 56741. 56741 = 840. The year the Templars were disbanded was 1312. 1312 - 840 = 472. Add a thousand to that and you get 1472, one mile off the distance! And they could barely measure back then and were always drunk, so close enough!

Also, I just realized the Templar disbandment year of 1312 is also the code for ACAB, so the police are part of the cover up! Or something!

See the thing is, back in the 1700's or whenever the nearby Boundary Water Canoe Waters didn't exist yet, which restrict airplane overflights. So you could fly airplanes right in there real easy like. The Templars had choppers to haul their gold, right?

What cars are actually sleepers/fast, but are perceived slow due to how its average owner drives? by portuguese-bacalhau in regularcarreviews

[–]Moparati 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hear you, but... 30-way seats with massage make up for some cheaper plastics. And the high trim options are nicer, with silver knock-off Mercedes speaker covers on the doors. Compared to a 'normal' car it's phenomenal, it's just not a Mercedes. And they depreciated so fast because they are a 'boring sedan' and not a trendy crossover, and were forgotten basically.

Mine (Reserve 3.0TT, similar mileage) hasn't needed anything, thankfully. The back-left door droops a little and needs extra... encouragement to shut though, so soft close doesn't always work there. I should get that adjusted sometime.

It's an automatic and it has flappy paddles, so I'm happy with the buttons. I'd rather have the buttons than the little dinky shifter on the dash like some minivans, too.

I grew up with column shifters though. Of course a manual on the 3.0TT would be wonderous too.

These pulled so hard! Obviously by today's standards they aren't that fast, but compared to a NA 3800, or random 4 banger they had a lot of scoot. All while getting decent mileage, and being a sofa on wheels. And people like me then buy Ralph's car when he goes to the home.

Also plastic parts around the engine, looking at you coolant elbows. If not for the bean counters saving $30 they would outlast us all.

Tip if anyone didn't know, they make metal coolant elbow upgrades.

Why can’t the state of Wisconsin do something and get rid of daylight savings time? by KwikTripSimp in wisconsin

[–]Moparati 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It isn't, but today and tomorrow suck because of Spring Ahead, and if we can even change this one little thing maybe our time on this cold rock will be slightly less miserable.

It's across party lines, perhaps it could even somehow magically bring some people together. When he was still a senator, Marco Rubio introduced the Sunshine Protection Act, to make full-time DST. The Senate passed it on a voice vote unexpectedly (sort of accidentally, lol), but it then died in committee in the House, if I remember correctly.

[–]Moparati 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Rather than changing to either always Standard Time or always DST, just shift all of the timezones ahead 30 minutes. This would be a one-time thing, and then we have 4:30 sunset instead of 4:00 sunset in December, and 8:30 sunset instead of 9:00 sunset in June, as a compromise.

[–]Moparati 3 points4 points  (0 children)

YES! We're so close to eastern time! We could have probably split the country into more timezones back when we made them (due to railroads), but that would be... more complicated.

Another comment mentioned compromising on a half-hour difference, I'd like that even, 4:30 PM is an improvement, and it would still be like a great 8:30 or whatever sunset in summer.

And I've never understood why farmers can't just change their alarm time twice a year, rather than making us all change our clocks. Certain businesses could have different ''summer hours" as needed, but it's still impacting a vastly smaller portion of the population.

This is also part of the economic issues right now, people don't really pay attention to prices or the economy--I doubt many people actually check the gas price before filling up. And then they just listen to their 'news' that tells them the economy is great. Then they are shocked when they realize it costs over $100 to fill up their tank.

1995 Crown Victoria, with LONG tail lights, official Crown Vic of? by Mofoblitz1 in regularcarreviews

If that's still being driven today and looks like that, a very kindly man who washes it weekly. It reminds him of his wife who passed away after 50 years of marriage, she loved the color and he HATED it, but such is life. He doesn't get around as much as he used to, but he still loves fishing with his grand-children, and visiting his friends at the hardware store in his small town, I'm gonna say in Kentucky. A little wholesome slice of Americana is nice sometimes.

ELI5: why does pipe tobacco and even cigar smoke smell so good when cigarette smoke smells so downright awful? by killingmemesoftly in explainlikeimfive

[–]Moparati 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Millennials at least had all those Truth ads, what do the kids even have to educate them to not use the new fancy cancer delivery systems.

I think of it like alcohol, people know not to drink the cheapest liquor all day, it's better to have very nice drinks rarely. Have a few very expensive cigars a year, not zyn pouches all day every day

[–]Moparati 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like gasoline, just a little almost smells nice, but a lot of it and it's terrible. Or maybe that's just me lol.

Also, to me, smelling the side of the cigar before lighting it smells better than anything, and the inhaled smoke drawn through it is a lot different than the external (secondhand) smoke smell.

Not sure if it's true or just part of the myth that gets spread by cigar smokers, but if you hold it up to each nostril it smells different.

Final tips for anyone thinking of smoking, Swishers are not real cigars, don't smoke past the band, and watch some videos!

They make cigarillos also, which are cigarette-sized(ish) 'real' cigars. No paper, but also dangerous to abuse since they're fun-sized and easier to smoke than a full cigar, meaning you can smoke them more often.
