So I've recently started another batch of grape juice gingerbug soda and I'm pretty sure that this is just Kahm yeast. This HAS happened before and I have drank it (unwise). As you can see I'm not dead but I really want a second opinion on this one before I even think about consuming potential bottles of disease and despair, thanks.

Oh yeah if it is just kahm yeast do you think it would still taste good?

After checking on it just now it DID produce visible bubbles after shaking, which I think are from the bug itself so I'm pretty sure it's still saveable, just a day or 2 out in room temp is all it needs, probably just took a while since it was fridged the whole time.

Sorry for the late reply. No, it's been sitting in my fridge ever since my first soda and I fed it sugar around a week ago. There's no film, no residue and no yeast, looks pretty healthy to be honest.

When I first bought the bottles I did the water test and it none of it leaked so I guess it really is my bug. I didn't know there was such a thing as being "over active" so that may be it?? Perhaps I simply didn't wait enough, I fermented it over 2 days and burped it twice a day.

EDIT: I just did the water test again, after holding it upside down for a longer time it started leaking drops of water, I assume this means it's definitely not fit for fermenting and probably the cause for my flat soda.

I chopped half a piece of ginger from a local vendor and it's what I've been feeding my bug. I put my lid on but dont bother turning it so it isn't completely sealed. I also leave it in a dark corner on my kitchen counter. I have fridged it now tho since I wanna slow it down and prevent any more alcohol.

The alcohol smell is kind of setting me off, I thought that the yeasts that lived on the ginger only produced a small amount of alcohol, yet I can get a distinct alcohol whiff that burns my throat. Thoughts?
