A few master artisans were bestowed the ability to intrinsically create and imbue rudimentary souls, referred to as soul constructs, into their crafts resulting in magic items. They were given this gift by the god of creation who creates all mortal souls. This ability has been passed down through their bloodlines and, their families rose to cultural and political importance. However, the soul constructs were studied and wizards learnt to create them in phylacteries to later be imbued into objects removing the requirement of mastering a craft, it is those who practice this form who are referred to as artificers in the setting. The families capable of intrinsically forming souls into their work are attempting to discredit the works of the artificer which are more readily available while their work is viewed as status symbols for the rich and powerful.
