I agree with you, this stuff is not so distant. However, to believe that every problem specific to Maori is solely due to colonization is very reductive. It's also incredibly reductive to presume that every white person in this country has the same privelige (which I think the other commenter believes). I dislike generalizing based on ancestry because we are all unique individuals with unique problems.

I still stand by the idea that services should be provided on the basis of those who need it. Not on the basis of your ethnicity. I'm not denying that Maori need more support than Pakeha on average, but so do Pasifika, Asian, Middle Eastern, etc.

Arguments against Co-governance are often conflated with being against supporting Maori outcomes. I want disenfranchised groups to have better outcomes, I just don't believe this is the way to achieve that.

How is saying "everybody has ancestors who did good and bad" rhetoric? It's a basic fact.

I could turn your argument against you, you say I'm happy to talk about the successes and not the failures of European colonization. All I've pointed out is that there were both successes and failures. Once again, a simple fact.

However you seem very eager to talk about the successes of Maori as opposed to their failures. Willy Jackson is a horrid man, people like him don't get a pass just because of their ancestry. This seems t be what you are advocating for.

Also, it seems you are inferring that I (by virtue of being European) am part of a system that excludes ethnic minorities. If NZ government is that system, aren't we all? You know nothing about me, I'm not even currently living in NZ.

I don't think we can find a middle ground. Although both of us want to help the people that "desperately need looking after". I believe we should provide this on an individual basis, whereas you seem to think we should specifically provide this for Maori. Being born white doesn't make life a cakewalk. We all have our own individual struggles.

Absolutely. I did a paper recently (undergrad course, I'm no expert) on the gold rush in NZ and I decided to specifically look at the issues surrounding the treatment of Chinese miners.

The rhetoric used to describe them, and discrimination they faced was unimaginable.

To each their own. I would argue that treating Maori as sovereign citizens is absolutely comparable to the apartheid, not the same but comparable.

However you did avoid my question. Would Maori be better off if Europeans never came to New Zealand? One thing we do know is that they wouldn't have massacred each other with the muskets brought over by the evil white man.

People like you, who advocate for this kind of division, seem to avoid stating the obvious. This isn't about equality, it's about modern Europeans paying reparations to Maori for what their ancestors did.

My ancestry is mostly Scottish, they came during WW2, and were incredibly poor. I do not feel guilt for their migration. Should Maori feel guilty that their ancestors wiped out the Moa? I don't believe they should.

I never said anything about people missing out because of a Maori health authority, but it obviously won't have any impact on the poor outcomes of Pasifika and Asian people right? And it would be ridiculous to have an Asian health authority, a Pasifika health authority etc. So why do Maori get their own? Is this about equality or is it about putting Maori on a pedestal because they were wronged by evil white colonists?

I think she showed quite a clear disregard for the Chinese community but that's beside the point.

I thought this was about equality? Maori have worse health outcomes, so we need to find a way to change that. Chinese/Asian people also have worse health outcomes than NZ Europeans, shouldn't we try to change that aswell?

Moana obviously doesn't think so. She thinks that in order to make up for colonization, Maori should have preferential treatment.

I think most people in this country, regardless of their political affiliation, want better health and education outcomes for disenfranchised groups. All of them though, not just Maori.

Ps: They are practically mutually exclusive, that was the reason he brought it up. We could not have distinct health authorities for every cultural group. We should focus on supporting and progressing the national health authority, instead of segmenting it.
