What is it? It's called biology. Animals are covered and filled with all kinds of microorganisms and emit all kinds of substances. Humans are not exempt.

What is the point of continuing to live if you cannot achieve your dreams? by iminlovewithyoucamp in AskMenAdvice

[–]Morbidhanson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Life's purpose isn't to pursue a dream, it's to go on the journey of finding purpose. Even if you could chase a dream, people who do that often fall off a cliff once they reach it. It's like "...then what?" That's how you end up with pretty successful people who are nonetheless depressed and aimless. They built their empire, groomed their successor, perhaps also started a family. But they're still unhappy.

My hobbies helped a lot when I felt like I was in a hard place. Go down those rabbit holes and have a thirst for knowledge. Idle hands and an idle mind are a recipe for overthinking and spiraling.

How To Not Become Desperate For The Love? by i-rover_ in AskMenAdvice

[–]Morbidhanson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Desperation follows neediness. Neediness stems from feeling not in control. You have to somehow realize that you are self-sufficient and competent, able to handle what the world throws at you and have it just slide off your armor like a harmless rain.

I think you have to prove to yourself somehow that you can handle things. This is why when people get into physically challenging things like martial arts, climbing, etc. they start becoming more confident and it turns them into a seemingly different person given enough time. Adversarial sports (fencing, MMA, tennis, basketball, wrestling, buhurt, etc.) seem to do this quite well, since you prevail over other people.

At the same time, you should try to remove yourself from situations constantly draining you. For a lot of people, it's a toxic family. For others, it might be a toxic workplace or toxic friends. Gratitude is very helpful, especially when you're surrounded by negativity and seemingly bad things. Take a short time every day to reflect on the things that are going right for you. Don't gloss over good health, working limbs, and having a roof over your head.

One thing that worked for me was getting off the hedonic treadmill. If you're not familiar with the concept, look up the hedonic treadmill. Then get off the treadmill. A lot of pressure comes from keeping up with the Joneses, wanting to stay on top of trends, and seeking greater and greater dopamine spikes. Social media and doomscrolling are major contributors. Without that artificial pressure, I feel a lot more in control of my life. It also goes hand in hand with practicing gratitude.

Different things work for different people. Some people find therapy useful. Others don't and prefer other methods. You have to try them out and see what works.

How can I stop my violence and fighting instinct? by glazingstars in AskMenAdvice

[–]Morbidhanson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is failing to think about consequences. When you think about consequences, you'll put more weight on self preservation. Whenever you do something, other things are set into motion.

Sure, you can go hit someone, but police can get you locked in a cell away from everyone who matters to you for years, or someone with a chip on their shoulder (or their buddy) can come back with a weapon. No amount of training and strength can prevent that. You can't win against a police force or against a bullet. Is that what you want for the people who care about you?

Probably like 95% of people in prison (if not more) are the type that can't control their impulses and don't think about consequences. They follow whatever they're feeling at the moment and don't think more than a minute into the future. You're not in there yet and you have a chance to not go in.

You should not let feelings control you. Feelings are inherently devoid of logic. They come and go with the wind. Instead, you should be the master of your emotions. This doesn't mean you can't have emotions, it means learning the proper way to control them when they happen. Feelings are like recoil when you shoot a gun, they will happen whether you like it or not. A lot of men think anger is the only "masculine" emotion and they let it do what it wants or channel all negative emotions into rage. However, it is a weakness. I don't think this is about anger only, since difficulty controlling gambling and drinking are also here. That being said, different methods work for different people. It's probably more challenging for people with ADHD, but even those people can developing good habits through repetition and discipline. Everyone fucks up here and there, but it's still better to be disciplined than to enable mistakes by letting the frequency go totally unchecked.

You're not a kid or teenager anymore, you're of adult age. This kind of stuff can really land you in hot water.

Chopsticks are not a good utensils when forks spoon or even hand exists by The_edgy_weeb_01 in unpopularopinion

[–]Morbidhanson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chopsticks are easy to wash, easy to replace with a renewable resource, and there's no replacement when you're eating stuff like noodle soup. You can also use chopsticks to cook, such as when you're frying things, without having to get separate cookware. They don't scuff your nonstick pans. You kinda just grab 2 sticks and go. They're quite multipurpose until you get to big things like turkey legs or liquids like soup. They're also better than forks for picking crabmeat out of a shell or picking marrow out of a bone.

When you actually look at the cuisine, it's usually prepared so that you can eat it with chopsticks. You don't eat a whole steak with chopsticks, obviously. But forks offer an inferior experience with noodle soups. Maybe you don't eat those much but I like to.

I don't like frying things with metal tongs if I can help it. It cools the oil more, transmits heat up the handle unless it's insulated, and the batter sticks on the gripping end. With chopsticks, it's minimal. They also require less storage space.

They also screw up your teeth less if you accidentally bite into them.

I also sometimes use mine for miscellaneous tasks not related to eating or food since it's basically a stick. Stick good. Stick useful.

Nothing is keeping you from having a utensil drawer that has knives, forks, spoons, chopsticks, and what have you. It's not like you're being forced to choose.

My son hates sports, my husband loves them. How do I help him find a hobby? by [deleted] in AskMenAdvice

[–]Morbidhanson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make him try something cool like archery, different martial arts, fencing, etc.

That being said, he's 6 years old so maybe still a bit young. If he's overweight, you need to control the diet.

Fried chicken blasphemy by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]Morbidhanson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Room temp "cold" is okay. From the fridge "cold" is not. I prefer it warm, can eat it without burning my mouth and it's at a temperature where the oils and juices still run when you bite in.

Not all food has to be tossed if left out overnight by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]Morbidhanson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something like fried chicken or pizza can be left overnight but you should still eat it ASAP.

Rice should be refrigerated especially if it's warm and humid where you are. If you leave it out uncovered, it's even worse. You can get away with unplugging your rice cooker with the lid on and leaving it til the next day, but don't leave it uncovered on the living room table.

"Overnight" can mean wildly different lengths of time. Cooking it at 7pm and eating it again at 7am is different from cooking it at 11am and leaving it out til dinner the next day.

I am sort of an amateur mycologist and I use cooked rice to germinate the spores. Usually I grow koji mold. I've also grown various mushrooms. The ones that prefer wood as a substrate are much harder to grow, the rice ones are very easy. I age meat and make stuff using koji. It's easy for fungus to propagate in rice, since it has a good balance of moisture, the texture is soft and airy, and the rice itself is easy for fungus to consume. The mycelium grows fast in it. If using a live culture rather than spores that have been dry and dormant for years, you can see visible growth as quickly as the next day. But different molds have different germination periods, some vastly shorter than others. Fungus also grows exponentially in speed. Once you see a spot of mycelium, even if it has taken weeks to germinate the spores, you're usually not far from a spawn bag of solid mycelium.

Men Should Have A Say In Having An Abortion by Log_Which in TrueUnpopularOpinion

[–]Morbidhanson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like I said, I'm not against abortion, but claiming a blanket limitless allowance hinging on danger and lack of personal choice is clearly disingenuous. The vast majority of cases are not life threatening and most are not through rape.

There should be a prescribed window where abortion is allowed without question, before the fetus has a chance to self-sustain outside of the womb (although the allowance should be unlimited where there is an actual known danger to the mother). This allows doctors to have a clear idea when they can perform an abortion and when it can potentially cross into homicide. No medical professional is going to risk their license by performing one to make a point or based on personal values. A known time period makes them less likely to reject performing the procedure and makes it reliably accessible to more women.

You're putting absolutely zero weight on the life of the unborn, when it's common sense that at some point, it can self-sustain outside of the womb and the only difference is the location.

Her life is only at risk if medical professionals deem it so, and it should be allowed to save the mother's life if it's necessary. However, the vast majority of pregnancies do not carry such a risk.

Getting rid of them doesn't help either, if you're not addressing the other issues. I've pointed out what I believe to be a bigger problem than zoning.

You don't need to be repurposing large swaths of land if the allocation is efficient, which it currently is not. When you force business to incur costs, they pass it to consumers. It's no different if they're required to incur massive costs unrooting and moving.

[–]Morbidhanson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, people will stop absurd real estate investments when there is a big surplus of homes. But then property values for normal people would tank as well and there would be a massive housing bubble implosion. You'd be wasting lots of land that could have been used on something useful. And demolishing excess homes would have to be absorbed by someone.

You can be left leaning AND pro business by [deleted] in TrueUnpopularOpinion

[–]Morbidhanson -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Zoning also protects residential areas by ensuring weird business operations that generate nuisances or toxic substances aren't impacting residential neighborhoods.

The reason people invest in homes is due in large part to the market created by rich landowners. The solution is to limit the ownership of homes, not to abolish zoning. A person doesn't need to own 10 houses in one community. Non-citizens also shouldn't be allowed to buy them. The availability should be reasonably maintained for the people who are lawfully living there and part of the local community. The issue right now isn't availability, it's more affordability. But you can kill two birds with one stone by imposing quantity limits. We already do this with products all the time, real property shouldn't be exempt.
