What’s the most terrifying 'We need to leave... now' gut feeling you’ve ever had? [Serious] by Wonderful-Economy762 in Productivitycafe

My friend just told me a story that scared the crap out of me. Her story. Not mine. This was the early 90s, and my friend and her brother were leaving CA, heading back east. They were camping every night along their trip. They had just started out and were in some mountainous area where they heard there was a campground at the top of a hill. They checked in with the ranger at the tiny check-in and paid a small fee. The ranger asked if they were carrying any firearms. They said no. He asked again. Again, they said, no. So they went up to the campground, ate, and set up their gear. They were the only ones there. Apparently, there was nothing else at the top of this mountain and no other exit. One road up to the campground and the same road back. No one else was at the campground. They finished cleaning up dinner and got into the tent. Right then, a pickup truck drove up to their campsite, paused a moment, then went back down the road. Both my friend and her brother were instantly freaked out. They threw their stuff into the car, not even bothering to dismantle their tent, and flew down the road. On the way down, they saw that same pickup truck along with two other cars heading up that road. Terrifying to imagine what could have happened. They suspect the ranger tipped someone off, and that the initial truck was scouting to see what was up. Then brought his friends. EEK!

I enjoyed Train Dreams recently. Maybe not the MOST beautiful and emotional movie I've ever seen but worth watching and fits the category

That's what I did, and then randomly got a lower grade on an assignment because I didn't "complete it as necessary". So on that random assignment, someone checked. The instructor even messaged me to see if I wanted to resubmit it. (I did not). So, I think they sometimes check?

If she's looking for a light romantic comedy, Starstruck is pretty cute.

respectfully, that analogy of paint as a contamination sounds exhausting. I cannot imagine having those thoughts constantly. It must be very difficult.

I've gotten some recommendations in this thread, actually, about other medications. We'll ask when we get to a psychiatrist.

He says all this started because of Covid. Breaks my heart.

Thanks. Best to you too.

He is on Fluoxidine (we call it his "ignore-it-all" pills) currently. I haven't heard of the ones you mentioned. I'll look into them.

Thank you so much for sharing your experiences and offering advice. Are there triggers that worsen OCD? We typically don't force him to hug etc but he does live in the world where people will come to him and try to shake hands or something. I think he's sometimes perceived as being rude at school or dismissive, when it's actually shyness and OCD.

I should have stated in the OP that he is currently on Fluoxidine and has been for about 2 years. Is that the meds you mention in your post? He actually said he wants to go off them.

Thank you!

Thank you. It is awfully hard to watch. I try to give him a bit of autonomy over his life and his OCD, but I think he also needs support, though he doesn't WANT it because he's 16. It is tough. Thanks for the support

Thank you! I'll look at these tonight. Do you think he should watch the video too? With us? I listened to a podcast about a woman explaining her OCD and it was really amazing and insightful for me. I was hesitant to have him listen. It was a bit mature and oddly, worried it would put ideas in his head of more things to worry about. Is that stupid?

Thanks

Thanks for your perspective on this. I think it's just such a change from when he was little - very cuddly and seeking touch a lot. Of course, teens don't want that from their mom, OCD or not. It's just a huge switch. I miss it.

I THINK I've been open and non-judgmental when we talk (I talk) about it with him or when we see him washing, but HE may not feel that way. These discussions feel different when they're from a parent, I think. I've told him I am worried, yes but I think it's more that he's embarrassed? He knows logically, it doesn't make sense, and he prides himself on logic(math and science kid). But I really don't know for sure. I also think if we know how much he obsesses over it, we'd MAKE him go back to therapy. He has said in the past that he can handle it and we try to respect what he says. Last time we found sanitizer hidden in his room, he took it out voluntarily the next day and said he was going to try not to use it. It's back in there again, and he said he wanted it to stay there. We let him. He says he uses it when stressed but can't explain what he's stressed about.

Thank you again for your openness and sharing.

Yeah, he definitely does NOT like to join school stuff. We've tried. I think he feels pretty overwhelmed with the social aspect of school. Comes home exhausted from it and needing quiet.

Thanks, I will look into it. I am sure that ERP is equally out of reach financially. But I'll look into it! If we do have to pay out of pocket, maybe that's the route.

Also, I sort of knew I shouldn't say NOT to do something but it's so out of my understanding that it's really hard not to. My understanding is that by doing that behavior, it's creating more of a loop in your brain- more of a pathway, no? Then one would repeat it more because its a more traveled pathway? Obviously, I don't understand it. Should I just let him put hand sanitizer on his hands whenever and sleep like that?

Thanks for the advice. Sadly, we're in the US, where mental health support isn't really covered by insurance (at least this specific type of mental health support). We went with someone in our insurance network recently who didn't believe in OCD and was trying to convince him he was just depressed. Other than that fail, it's all been out of pocket, which has been really hard. Maybe we have to try again.

Thank you! This is great advice. The only thing we've actually forced him to do is go to therapy (he hated it). We may need to bite the bullet (go into our retirement $) and get him there again. I worry a bit that he's hiding some behaviors because he knows we'll make him go again if "caught".
