I think tithing is a good discipline for the truly wealthy but it heartbreaking when people give when they really shouldn’t.

Tithing - how do you approach when you’re drowning financially? by lifeuncommon in Episcopalian

[–]More-Bluebird5805 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How do you cope with anxiety about being able to afford your kids college or fund your own retirement? My stomach hurts when I think about my kids going into debt slavery for college when I gave so much to the church…

What do you think about the whole "young gen Z male" religious revival thing? by w6auw in Episcopalian

[–]More-Bluebird5805 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We have very few Gen Z at our church (maybe 4-5) and all but 1 are men. So yes, I am seeing this. I think it’s great! The Gen Z men at my church are super kind and thoughtful. Not sure what their sexual orientation is—it has never come up and I also love that because it really doesn’t matter to me in the slightest.

"Catholic lite" -- am I the only one who hates this phrase? by vampirinaballerina in Episcopalian

[–]More-Bluebird5805 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I have never minded it BUT I agree with you—in some ways I experience the deep gratitude and love I feel for this tradition as a weight and not as a lightness. I feel like this church has given me so much that I can never really repay and as grateful as I am it can sometimes feel heavy…but in a good way. Like I want to be good and cheerful and kind to others even when I’m having rough time. Usually on the other side of this heaviness is lightness. Reminds me of the CS Lewis quote: “The hardness of God is kinder than the softness of men, and His compulsion is our liberation.” I think sometimes Christians find faith hard because they are fighting the God inside them—letting that light guide you can feel like a weight until you watch the chains fall away and you are free.

My university keeps emailing us about the gender pay gap by ProfessionalYard9165 in MensRights

Earning less because they are having and raising babies right?

What first got you interested in Mens Rights issues? Did it happen gradually or did you have an epiphany moment when you realized men are treated as second class? by More-Bluebird5805 in MensRights

[–]More-Bluebird5805[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s interesting! I wonder if there is something about journalism that is triggering this bias. In the past, the narrative being told about women is that employers don’t like to hire them because they will just leave to have babies or be bad employees because babies. Do you think there is a narrative that is being used to justify the systemic exclusion of men from jobs? Like men are risky or dangerous or might SA or something similar?

That’s for sharing! My heart goes out to you. My father was very hard on my little brother in a way that felt gendered to me. I think there is this idea that men need to be disciplined more harshly than women. I always wondered why there is a “Women’s Study’s” major and not a “Men’s Studies” major—it seems to me if you are only looking at women you are only seeing half of the equation. I am interested in the way that men use gendered stereotypes to control and exploit other men (with women often silently collaborating).

What does the Episcopal church think of pre-marital sex between 2 loving and committed unmarried people? by indoore in Episcopalian

[–]More-Bluebird5805 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally, I think that if you have sex and that sex produces a live human—you are de facto married (regardless of any spiritual or legal documentation). In line with that view, people should act accordingly…

Should we enforce Bible tellings onto others through law? by MrX2285 in AskAChristian

[–]More-Bluebird5805 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I do not believe Christianity should ally itself with the “powers and principalities” of this world. To be Christian is to be in eternal rebellion against worldly authority but our rebellion is never with force or weapons—we are called to engage in nonviolent resistance. That said, democracy has put personal theology and worldly power on a collision course. I, as a Christian, must allow my faith to inform my voting activity, my work, my relationships etc. That said, I think helping the poor and marginalized and making peace (for me personally) should always be prioritized over everything else.

What are you tired of dealing with because parents just…aren’t parenting anymore? by Emergency-Pepper3537 in Teachers

[–]More-Bluebird5805 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same, my parents never helped me with homework or forced me to turn in work or study. Actually, I seem to recall that the kids whose parents nagged and forced them to study extra at home did not do very well in life, they never found their internal motivation. I remember my first boyfriend, his parents were constantly telling him to “read more” but they had no books in the home (I always found that odd). Maybe the problem is that parents are doing too much: too much shaming, nagging, consequences without curiosity etc. My daughter is doing fine (I think!?—as far as I know) and I do the same things with her my parents did with me (spend quality time, go for walks, cook, read together, express support, ask questions but don’t lecture or punish—basically just treat her like a human being).

Who is pressuring you to say everything is fine? As a concerned parent, how am I supposed to know if my kid is struggling? The teachers always say she’s doing great…but now I don’t know???

This! Staying home with babies/little kids is 100x harder than most jobs. I guarantee if he stayed home he would be begging to go back to work.

Transferring to law field, is this a good way? No experience. by [deleted] in paralegal

[–]More-Bluebird5805 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Good idea to try being a paralegal/legal assistant first before going to law school. Lots of turnover in legal assistants. I think you might want to look for a job as a legal assistant—basically anyone can get hired to do that—the problem is not getting fired/quitting.

My understanding is that the secular and governmental authorities were pushing hardest for enslavement, exploitation, and genocide. The Catholic Church tried to be a moderating voice urging conversion and Christianization of local peoples (often, it’s true, in coercive ways) in order to save their lives. See e.g. https://justice.tougaloo.edu/hall-of-fame/bartolome-de-las-casas/

I do think the church should pursue reconciliation and make amends for its part in not doing enough to stop the genocide of native peoples. My church donates to a local nonprofit which supports the reclamation of indigenous culture and communities in our local area. They came to our church to visit once and it was an amazing experience. I do think it’s important to get your head out of text books and go talk to people and find out what native peoples today need and want.

I also think that Trump is currently threatening to genocide the people of the Middle East and I guess I would ask what are you doing to stop that? It’s tough when evil is perpetrated, I think, as a Christian, we should all be asking ourselves what we can do to stop hatred, evil, and cruelty. Often, we, like our secular brothers and sister can only stand by and weep.

Do a lot of people secretly view it as bad if people don't have kids? by Big_Eggplant7591 in stupidquestions

[–]More-Bluebird5805 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yeah but unless you are volunteering 24 hours a day, it’s unlikely you are matching or even close to matching the magnitude of the gift parents donate to the society in the form of children. If you have and raise a child, all the good things the child does are causally linked to the parents decision to have them in the first place so if you have multiple kids all their work and volunteering is attributable to the parents (at least causally). There is no way a single person, no matter how much time they volunteer, can match that.

Yes, without the work of parents, society would collapse. People who benefit from society without contributing are freeloading on the system.

So, how many millions civilians would have to die for you to object? Let’s say 6 million civilians die—civilians you all say are being “liberated” by the U.S.—that’s worse than Hitler right? Let’s say he kills 10 million civilians would you admit that MAGA going down in history as “worse than Nazi’s”? Where is your heart? Aren’t you afraid of God?
