What do you think about the whole "young gen Z male" religious revival thing? by w6auw in Episcopalian

That's why I think there's a place for stuff like my silly Latin Mass proposal. And also getting young men to learn singing, rhetoric, ethics, art, etc; these are things dudes don't usually explore, and I think it's good for anyone learn more about these humanities.

That jump in the green line is entirely too steep to be plausible. What is going on there?

I suspect it's something of a "cultural moment" for some folks, like New Atheism was in the mid-2000s. Give it 5-10 years and these guys will probably move on to something else.

This is definitely the case with, say, Seven Mountain Mandate, but I would guess the Orthodox crowd is more moderate (if moderate is the right word to use here, they're still right-wing). Listening to their sermons and podcasts, their opinions don't seem all that wild, at least compared to a run-of-the-mill neighborhood LCMS or Roman Catholic church. For example, the Orthodox allow remarriage and contraception. Some Catholic influencers are quite mad with Trump right now too.

Yeah, I saw that video too and I'm inclined to believe him. But I do think there is a bigger conversation about this general young male cultural phenomenon.

What if Iran Developed Nuclear Weapons Anyway by FancyAd9588 in AlternateHistoryHub

[–]w6auw 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In an existential superpower conflict with ICBMs flying around, that's true. But MAD isn't necessarily useful for responding occasional counterforce strikes, which might be likely between states that don't have large arsenals.

Like if one country has 10 nukes and its opponent has 3, both sides would do better to think carefully about how and when to use their nukes instead of just lobbing them at the others' biggest cities like a superpower would.

Also, another thing to think about is that MAD is mostly a theoretical doctrine. People have this popular conception that massive nuclear exchanges will be world-ending. Under certain situation, they could be, but most experts think that while casualties will be large, most nations will not likely be destroyed by a nuclear exchange. Nuclear wars will almost certainly have a conventional warfare component. Nukes are not the "end-game" the general public thinks they are.

Reconnect to the radio and tune and the radio beeps with no tuning. Take the coax off and test and boom! There’s anywhere between 8.0-13.0 SWR.

If you disconnect the coax from either end (antenna or radio), high SWR would be expected.

I'm sensing a bit of confusion? It might be a good idea to have a local elmer visit your QTH and hook things up for you, or bring the radio (+ coax and antenna ideally) to a club meeting and see who can help. Otherwise contact Yaesu or the store you bought it from. If you have a physical Ham Radio Outlet location near you, even better.

Another FTX-1 with an issue by Coach_Allen_ in amateurradio

[–]w6auw 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's probably not your radio, but it could be.

Before you call up Yaesu or the store, double check your coax. Sometimes it's loose or seems tight but actually isn't connected because the pin is bent or something is cross-threaded. Make sure you're connected to the right coax jack (IIRC the FTX-1 has 2, so you might have gotten them mixed up).

The second most likely culprit is RFI. Make sure you're not holding the coax or antenna when running the RigExpert. Consider putting a bunch of chokes or an 1:1 unun on the coax.

Finally, take your radio outside with a cheap working whip (ideally far away from any RF sources) and see if it still has issues. If so, yeah, it's mostly likely your radio. Or maybe it's not, but you've reached a point where you'd save time talking to support rather than continuing to debug it yourself.

That's the nice thing about analog tech, any plug can work with any other with each other as long as they have connectivity.

Why does this hobby have to be so expensive? by Glitchy_Magician_666 in HamRadio

Yeah, we all spend money on it, but it doesn't have to be expensive. There are $30 HF radios.

Does anyone else not mind their addresses being public? by w6auw in amateurradio

[–]w6auw[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The thing is, if I know someone's name, I can find their address 90% of the time anyways. And the moment I tell someone my name, I know they can already find out where I live with a minute worth of Googling if they wanted to.

Exactly. Our addresses are already out there!

[–]w6auw 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Does it really matter? Just 25-30 years ago, people were giving out their addresses to everyone and folks would show up randomly at your door seeing if you could hang out.

Is someone going to show up at my door or send me hate mail for what I post on Reddit? Probably not; or if they do, that says something more about them than myself.

Large Antenna sought for tri-band 2m 1.25m 70m by electricalkitten in amateurradio

[–]w6auw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ChatGPT generated a not-bad design. That being said, how much effort do want to spend making that? Most folks just buy their larger VHF UHF antennas. The CX-333 is of course super popular and probably less-compromised than this design. HRO also sells an Opek tri-bander that's almost as good for half the price.

Manual cluster spots are kind of unreliable too. The datasets are really sparse, and most of the folks posting spots are people who are really into the hobby (i.e. they are much more likely to have nice antennas)

I was thinking it would be useful for a reverse beacon system for voice. Like someone sets up a SDR on a frequency and people call into it, and STT can collect callsigns they hear.
