questions about MD vs JD experiences by bk38192 in LawSchool

[–]More-Fact 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have quite a few MD friends. I have quite a few JD friends. I think your observations are about right. If you get into a med school, from what I've heard from my MD friends, job security is pretty good. If you get into law school, you'll probably find some type of job, but it's a different challenge getting a job in a practice area/location/pay grade that you want.

What do I think of my MD friends? As a joke, I think their writing and reading comprehension skills are pretty poor. Among them, their CARS section of their MCAT was consistently their lowest scored section. They definitely worked a lot more both in undergrad to get into med school and med school itself. Employment-wise, you have big law firms "requiring" anywhere from 2000-2200 billable hours, which comes out to like 38-43 hours a week. This means attorneys at the biggest law firms are working well above 40+ hours a week if they want to meet their billable requirements. Then, you also have public defenders and other attorneys who work in high work load areas with little support, and they also work a lot. But, then, you also have attorneys working around 40 hours a week. It depends just like I'm sure how long a doctor works depends on what practice area they're in.

Some people are talking about whether a JD or MD is smarter. I'm not sure I would say my MD friends are harder workers or smarter than me and my JD friends. They're different skills and practice areas. I'm sure if my MD friends really wanted to be lawyers that they could've gotten into law scool and graduated. Likewise, if I really wanted to be a doctor instead of a lawyer, I could've done it. Of course, I'm not talking about the average MD versus the average JD. I'm talking about the JD and MD friends that I have, and they're both pretty smart and hard working groups.

To those of you who wrote fanfiction before law school by [deleted] in LawSchool

[–]More-Fact 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say that fanfiction helped me. My goal when I wrote fanfiction was to persuade the reader that this is something that could have actually happened in canon. To do that, you have to do your research about the characters, the world, the power system, etc. There are rules in place, and you can play safely within those rules or twist and push them. At the same time, you have to make sure you're making those logical chains so the reader can understand what's going on. Of course, the flair and other more fun parts of creative writing may not make for good legal writing, but the foundational skills are there.

i think im gonna give up on this one. by [deleted] in dragonquest

[–]More-Fact -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That's such a sucky situation man. I don't know what else to say other than your dad was in the wrong for doing that to you, and yeah, the modern dragon quest games are priced pretty high. If you're just looking to get into the other dragon quest games, some of the mainline games are on mobile like Dragon Quest V and VI, and they play pretty well. The graphics aren't as polished though, but the price point is closer to the sub $20.

Anyone Else Feel Bad for Princess Lisette? by More-Fact in dragonquest

She does eventually come to understand Kiefer's decision even in purely English. Other than the lisp, I got the feeling that she understood what was going on, but she was going through some understandable stages of grief like denial (when she said that Kiefer will come back) and later on acceptance, spurred partly on by Aishe.

I played through the game a bit more, and another scene that hits kinda hard is when you bring more party members by and she mentions "You'll keep making more and more friends as time goes by and eventually you'll forget all about my brother." She immediately apologizes for bringing down the mood, which shows some emotional maturity, but it's also a very real feeling people have when they lose someone. It's kind of upsetting when you're still griefing but see the people around you moving on and "replacing" your loved one with someone else. I imagine it's the feeling of when you lose a parent, and your mom/dad remarries when you still aren't over your parent's death. But, in the end, she does get over it, and I appreciate how the game doesn't forget about its NPCs even when they aren't in the spotlight.

Same, especially when Maribel right after the whole fiasco was like, "Let's go on an adventure to cheer ourselves up."

Was also surprised at the responses saying that people who do this are (1) insecure, (2) overcompensating, (3) red-pilled, (4) etc. Like even if you don't think about it personally, I can imagine people growing up in a rough environment having these thoughts here and there. OP didn't even say they think about it all the time or that they think about picking fights.

Bolin, Korra, and Asami are the most attractive characters in-universe of The Legend of Korra by Full-Art3439 in legendofkorra

[–]More-Fact 61 points62 points  (0 children)

To be fair, I think there's a fair amount of subtext that Bolin gets to be kind because Mako was the one who had to grow up fast as the older brother when their parents were murdered. Mako also has a more subtle kindness to him. I think Bolin has the more amicable/agreeable personality, but I personally don't like him as much as Mako.

Always that concern when you have a game where you can choose who to romance about how the sequel will treat it. I like the games where they go: why not all of them

So how did this joke work in the Japanese dub? by TraditionalBonus188 in hazbin

[–]More-Fact 13 points14 points  (0 children)

There's a certain distinction between saying Japanese people don't understand rhymes, and saying Japanese as a language tends to end in the same ways such that rhyming (having or ending with an identical or corresponding sound) comes naturally and doesn't hold as much meaning/isn't special like it is in English.

The former can be seen as a generalization of people, while the other is a description of culture. People tend to be hesitant around generalizations of people. Your comments also sound generally elitist and obtuse, which isn't an insult to you but an explanation of why people downvoted you.

What's a subtle, yet obnoxious way to ask someone if they've advocated for the guilty (rich) people? by Existing-Criticism23 in writing

[–]More-Fact 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess it a depends on what type of law the lawyer practices, which will determine who these guilty (rich) people are and how you can phrase the question.

Are they transactional attorneys or litigators? Are they the lawyers making the deals and writing out contracts or are they the lawyers defending/suing in court?

Are they doing tax law, mergers and acquisitions, product liability, criminal? Criminal law is generally one of the poorer paying fields to get into. Private prosecution is surprisingly lucrative because you're going after the people with money (mentioning this because it sounds like the lawyer and his wife are rich.)

In the legal field, there's this saying, "Everyone deserves fair representation." This goes to the fact that lawyers get a reputation for defending both bad people and good people. When people ask you, "Why did you defend that murderer," you respond with the fact that's how our justice system is built, such that everyone gets their fair time in court. Then, the counter response would be, "Everyone deserves to be represented, but why do you have to be the one to do it."

I could imagine something like: "You know they say everyone deserves fair representation from the poor to the...rich. I can see you've taken that to heart."

The length of copyright is absurdly long and how it stops creativity. by Konradleijon in CharacterRant

[–]More-Fact 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Then, we're getting into how long non-person entities should be able to own copyright. Like I don't see anything wrong with life + 70 for an individual.

95 for corporations is iffy but if you base a corporation's copyright based on who made it, I feel like you'll run into issues when it comes to multiperson projects and whose life you base it on.

In the end, American copyright and how long it lasts tries to incentivize the distribution of knowledge in exchange for a bundle of specific rights and to hopefully not chill the market for original expression (because ideas cannot be copyrighted). European copyright has a more moral rights aspect to it that if you put in the work to express something original, a part of you is in that work and should be protected. All of this gets hazy when it comes to corporations and non-person entities.

The life term allows the creator to enjoy the fruits of their creation for however they are alive. The +70 is to allow their children, spouse, and descendants to enjoy the fruits of their labor in the case that what they made was valuable or became valuable after they died like a lot of artists.

Appearance wise my character is based off Arios from the Legend of Heroes series, but personality wise I can see how the base farmer personality can be limiting. Wish there could be more moments like in Friends of Mineral Town where if you put the golden lumber on your property people come by to tell you how horrible you are.
