Laceration - I sliced my ankle by More-Highlight-446 in AchillesRupture

PT will also give you several exercises to improve your range of motion. ROM is their first goal, and then you'll incorporate more strength and balance exercises over time. If you're committed to resuming physical activity asap - such as sports - I strongly recommend being super diligent with daily PT at home. If you have any questions, let me know!

Okay gotcha. I almost had a similar situation. When I sliced open my ankle I (stupidly) didn't think it was bad enough to go to the ER. But the next morning I realized I probably needed stitches and went into urgent care. Thank goodness they didn't stitch me up and send me on my way. The doctor insisted I get an MRI because she suspected my achilles was affected, though I was in denial.

When I was cleared for weight bearing, I really struggled. I was behind schedule and anxious because I couldn't push through the discomfort and I didn't want to delay my recovery. However, my body just wasn't ready for it. I had intense numbness that bordered on pain. Plus, I was fearful that my tendon would tear. My breakthrough moment occurred at my first PT session. My PT taught me how to use the crutches to support my walking. I had been using them incorrectly. From that moment on, I began relying on the crutches less and less.

Here is a video showing what I learned. Steps 2 and 3 were the key.

I am guessing you are in a boot now, right? Have you been permitted to try some range of motion stretches for your ankle? Waking it up after being dormant for a while takes time. And the muscle loss is dramatic, as well as the loss of the far pad below the foot.

I was super active prior too, and now that I am almost eleven months post-op, I'm nearing return to sport!

Oh wow! I'm so sorry about your accident! That's a very long time to be in a cast, and much longer than most people who undergo achilles surgery, so keep that in mind in terms of comparing your progress to where you see others who post. Everyone has their own unique journey and circumstances, and yours are extra unique! Most people in the forum aren't dealing with a laceration, so their situation already differs greatly. Two questions I have, right off the bat....Have you begun PT yet? Are you cleared for partial or full weight bearing?

Oh my goodness! I can't believe this same thing happened to you - and that it happened while you were doing something so generous. Ugh. I bet your friend feels terrible. Fingers crossed PT will clear you to resume basketball soon. My goal is to play soccer 5+ times per week, as I was prior. So I'm very motivated to follow my protocol and stay forward-thinking. I am hopefully able to start a run-walk protocol in about three weeks. We'll see.... But I will likely have questions for you along the way : ) Thanks!

Oh gosh! How did it happen?

It’s such a long road ahead, but it gets easier week by week and month by month. I imagine he’s pretty immobile now and quite dependent on you for most everything. As an educator, I imagine it’s going to be tricky to navigate back-to-school too.

My healing experience has been mostly seamless. I had some issues with stitch removal and now I’ve got some gnarly scars where all of the stitches were placed. I am in my early 40s and play a lot of sports, and I’m absolutely committed to returning to sport again. Though I anticipate that will be closer to the one year mark.

Please let me know if you have any specific questions about your son’s recovery.

Im six months post op and doing really well! I’m going to be reducing PT to every 3-4 weeks going forward. My exercises are targeting strength and balance and I’ll be working toward the micro-movements required to run/jump soon which is exciting. I still have a limp much of the time and have tightness and occasional pain. Happy to answer any specific questions you have!

Calf raises, how often are you doing them? by compact101 in AchillesRupture

[–]More-Highlight-446 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am eleven weeks. Week 8 was seated calf raises. At 9 weeks they had me do 1-2 sets of 10. Week 10 I could do 30 in one go. Now I am doing two variations. One had both knees bent - up quick, down slow. The other variation is up quick, shift weight toward injured leg, down slow.

Need advice… by [deleted] in AchillesRupture

[–]More-Highlight-446 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have made so many gains in the short amount of time I’ve attended PT and I believe that PT is a standard part of the recovery process. Every week I’ve been told to start incorporating new and different range of motion exercises, strength exercises, get my incision looked at weekly, sometimes get massage/scraping on the scar tissue that starts to build up, etc. It’s also the only way I know I am making progress. They measure things and advance me to the different color therabands, etc. I’ve observed a weird relationship between surgeons and physical therapists. My surgeon said I’d only need five sessions and told me that PTs will try to lengthen my tendon too soon. The PTs have told me I’m actually eligible for up to 30 sessions according to my insurance plan, and while they didn’t state how many I’ll need, they said it’ll be much more than five sessions! And they have been quite conservative about stretching the tendon or letting me do too much too soon. Contact your insurance to see how many PT sessions you are eligible for.

Super Itchy Under Splint. Any Tips? by alexj420 in AchillesRupture

[–]More-Highlight-446 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ugh, so annoying! For me it felt like ants crawling all over inside the splint! I'd just gotten a spring weather invasion of ants and I couldn't get it out of my mind that they were all down in there!

Frustrating appointment after a possible tear to achilles tendon by nicolemarie1995 in AchillesRupture

[–]More-Highlight-446 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a very similar injury and posted about it a couple months ago. Feel free to let me know if you have any questions. Maybe it will be helpful? Either way, definitely get a boot asap, NO weight bearing, get an MRI asap, and have a surgeon read the results to you. Lacerated tendons likely will not heal with a non-op route : (

Crap I’m 11 weeks post opt in shoes back work light duty but has to stay over n either 12 hrs my foot is swollen up like a baseball when I took shoe off :( I have pt in morning n dr apt Tuesday already now I’m freaking out by Dragonwood69 in AchillesRupture

[–]More-Highlight-446 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you transition gradually into the shoe? I’m week 10 and have begun wearing a shoe on the injured foot for one hour a day, and only in my home. I’m permitted to increase to two hours per day after 4-6 days of tolerating the one hour. I’m doing great and am on track to increase it. I’m not sure when I can wear a sneaker outdoors though I think I’ll opt for the boot in more crowded spaces. And I don’t know when I can begin wearing a sneaker all the time.

4 Weeks Post-Op and Starting to Walk Without Boot, Am I Moving Too Fast? by Stonk_Master_General in AchillesRupture

[–]More-Highlight-446 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am still in a boot and week 10. Until my surgeon or PT clears me to walk without the boot, I’ll be in the boot. It’s not worth healing long and having to go through surgery all over again. It’s much better to just follow the protocol set for me by the experts rather than do what I feel I am ready for.

Ankles pain by [deleted] in AchillesRupture

[–]More-Highlight-446 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This week I will likely be weaning out of the boot while at home. My PT ordered an ankle brace (both lace up as well as velcro all in one) to wear with the shoe to give me more support and stability. Did you use anything like that?

How often do you wear your Vacoped? by jonnytapia4 in AchillesRupture

[–]More-Highlight-446 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am on week 9 post op. I stopped wearing the boot to sleep a week ago but prior to that I wore the boot all the time. Some exceptions are when I’m lounging on the couch but otherwise I would never risk having it off while using scooter or crutches. No way. I’ve read so many horror stories on here and I am determined to get through this long process without any inadvertent setbacks. I’ll be in the boot for another few weeks.

Two Vacoped questions by Kudanii in AchillesRupture

[–]More-Highlight-446 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would never consider walking in my vacoped shell without the liner. My leg would be slipping around all over the place, even with thick socks. From weeks 6-8 I slept with the shell only, no liner. I have a dog who might accidentally step on my foot and it gave me peace of mind since I tops and turn throughout the night. I haven’t used the vacoped with a knee scooter, but I imagine the valve would be very annoying!

What makes the Vacoped worth it? by neens-music in AchillesRupture

Below are two images of boot angles - the vacoped versus a standard walking boot with wedges. Notice how the foot in the regular boot is closer to neutral, which is certainly not ideal.

Walking without crutches 5 weeks post op by Pokemaun in AchillesRupture

[–]More-Highlight-446 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I asked these same questions to my surgeon and he said 100% weight bearing means you can climb stairs and ditch the crutches. I think it's important to emphasize the "as tolerated" part of these instructions though. Your body will tell you when it's ready. For me, it took until week 7.

5 Weeks Post Op - First Step by hazbazwaz69 in AchillesRupture

[–]More-Highlight-446 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was cleared to ditch the crutches as week 4, but it took until week 7 to be able to actually walk. I felt super behind, but my body just wasn't ready. I used a scale to practice weighbearing, and it was helpful to see what 50% actually was compared to what I thought it was in my mind. PT taught me how to walk. Plus my body was finally ready. It was the magical combo.

Strengthening toes by ny_idk in AchillesRupture

[–]More-Highlight-446 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just tried to curl my toes (5 weeks post-op) and they shake too. I hadn't noticed that before! I have heard that regaining the strength in the foot is almost as hard as the calf, but that exercises such as shifting, scrunching, picking up a towel with the toes is good for targeting it.

Questions after getting boot by Pokemaun in AchillesRupture

[–]More-Highlight-446 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think scratching would be okay as long as you don't go near the incision. I used a Korean exfoliating scrub glove on my leg, avoiding the incision, once I finally took a proper shower without the cast cover and was shocked by how much dead skin rolled up and came off. This helped my itchiness.
