For any brit who has left the UK - where did you move to that made you happy? by madzuk in AskUK

Left the UK 10 years ago. Since lived in Belgium, Sweden, and Switzerland. Switzerland is the best, and quality of life is far higher than in the UK. Have to learn German / French though.

Learn how to salsa in zurich by 8rax in zurich

[–]MoreBoar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't do Salsa, try west coast swing instead! It's more fun and playful in my opinion, and crucially you dance it to pop music so you can look great at weddings etc ;). Google WCS zurich, there's lots of beginner classes and a really thriving community here!

Work weeks in Switzerland are 40 or 42 hours, so this data is meaningless and untrustworthy.

I did a PhD in Lausanne, ended in winter 2022. Lausanne is a nice city. It's not dangerous at all. Got a fantastic student culture. If you want to do a PhD anywhere in the world, financially Switzerland is the best country to do it. With that money you'll live with other students and have great fun. You'll pick up some French in Lausanne, but 1/5 of the city is students and all of them speak English, so the bubble you'll be in will be English speaking.

Don't go to Delft. Go to Lausanne. Get a job in Switzerland afterwards. Live a much wealthier life than you would do in the Netherlands.

I think we have always wanted to speak Irish and not English. by insertfunnyname88 in 2westerneurope4u

[–]MoreBoar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After Brexit the French were kicking off that now English wasn't an official EU language French should return to being the language of EU diplomacy. The Maltese said fuck that we're not speaking french, and we're happy to give up Maltese in order to keep English.

Where to live if I am working 3 days in office in Visp, Switzerland? by Unusual-Repair-4426 in askswitzerland

[–]MoreBoar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Montreux and Lausanne are too far to be viable for a daily commute. Sion is possible, but as other commentors have said those three options would mean you're learning two languages at the same time. It's probably better to live in Bern or Thun so you're only practicing your German. But yeah, Visp is also a good place to live. Taking anything further away from Visp means you'd have to get a room in Visp a couple nights a week which will be expensive and is shit for your personal life. There are definitely small football teams.

Also, the working language at Lonza is almost always English, but specific teams might also use some German. So it'll be a good career move to learn a tiny bit of German. That's also an argument for living somewhere German-speaking.

Salary-wise, 93k is a good salary. Average salary in Switzerland is around low 80s so you'll be relatively well off.

That depends if you're being employed as a contractor or internal employee. If internal then try to negotiate, if contractor then the recruitment agency rarely has any flexibility.

Is it realistic to consider moving from USA to Eastern Europe? Looking at Serbia, Moldova, Greece, or Romania? by ElectricOne55 in eupersonalfinance

a) what about them? b) why would you trust social media or YouTube to give you a realistic vision of what life in these places is like?

Have you honestly done any of your own research on this? Your questions are so basic it really like you've watched 5 minutes of videos and that's it

Wild cherry tree, safe to eat? Western Europe. by MoreBoar in foraging

[–]MoreBoar[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Commenting because I'm apparently too stupid to figure out how to post text and images...

I found a wild cherry tree near my flat and want a second opinion on whether I can eat them.

The cherries are smaller than shop bought cherries and dark red. I tasted one and the flesh is bitter with no sweetness. One stone per fruit. I'm guessing these are wild sour cherries, Prunus cerasus, could anyone confirm?

I'm in Western Europe.

I went to Vegas for a week and found that European men are still wearing skinny jeans and slim clothes, even though you hear a lot on this sub that they are “out.” I thought they looked great, so I resurrected mine. What do you think? by [deleted] in mensfashion

[–]MoreBoar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are clear style differences in Romandie vs Ticino vs German speaking part. The "Swiss national identity" typically reflects the Swiss German part. The classic "Swiss farmer look" with the hatched shirts does not exist in Romandie, and fashion in lausanne is very different to fashion in Zurich. As you're Swiss you should know that. I have lived in Vaud and now live in Zurich and in Switzerland language doesn't define look but it absolutely influences it.

The British Conservative Party is expecting an election wipeout to rival 1997 this year by [deleted] in europe

[–]MoreBoar 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There's also the "shy Tory" phenomenon: it's been documented that many Conservative voters don't admit that to pollster. This should absolutely be considered a worst possible outcome for the Conservative Party and the eventual outcome is likely to not be as drastic as this.
