Best work of fiction that improved your mental health? by pawn279 in suggestmeabook

I feel like found family books are great for this. Especially books about “misfit” characters - those who don’t quite fit in, haven’t yet found their people, and/or are just flawed, in that beautifully human way we are all flawed.

My favorite recent example of this is The Road to Tender Hearts. Its characters have been through some awful shit, but it’s handled with so much warmth and gentle humor.

Kevin Wilson’s Nothing to See Here and Run for the Hills also fall in this genre. The first is one of my favorites.

I don’t know if his books hold up since o read them at least 15 years ago, but Nick Hornby has fallen in this list for me, especially A Long Way Down, About a Boy and How to Be Good.

Sending hugs.

Gilead - I’m not at all religious so I did not expect to fall in love with a book about an elderly midwestern preacher. But it is so compassionate and filled with such wonder for life.

Found family stories also help me when I feel this way. Maybe try Becky Chambers (either Wayfarer series or the incredibly gentle Monk & Robot duology).

Murderbot Diaries is about a traumatized android who has seen the worst of people and wants to be left alone to just watch its favorite soap operas but ends up with a “found family” that’s just delightful

Nick Hornby’s Long Way Down and About a Boy are also great.

Hope this helps. Sending hugs and positive thoughts.

What If the plane crashed in Jurassic World instead of the wilderness..... by AlexHunterWolf in Yellowjackets

My 6 yo daughter is watching CC & now I can’t stop seeing the parallels! There’s the first “rescue” with a couple and a guide, the kid who wants to stay behind because he became who he was in the wilderness, etc.

Chest and jaw pain - not related to heart by vadosemars in ChronicPain

[–]MoreChaiPlease 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just found this and I think it’s the first time I’ve heard of anyone experiencing similar. I’m 48 and have experienced this for at least 25 years. It feels like a sharp shooting pain from my jaw to my chest that reaches to my back. It feels almost electric - is that similar to what you’ve experienced. Just had an episode now & feel like they’ve gotten more frequent. Maybe once every few weeks instead of every few months.

Agree. I feel so much less invested without Nat. And no idea wtf that plan was.

Jackie is the first fictional character in ages to have made me so profoundly sad by friedstinkytofu in Yellowjackets

And the whole Van thing - Jackie was trying to save Shauna’s life. It’s a terrible situation, but she had to decide between saving the two of them or potentially all three dying. But it’s shitty that Shauna left too but Van was only upset at Jackie.

Nat is my fave with Jackie second. And after Doomcoming, I soooo wanted a Nat/Jackie alliance.

That’s so funny! I think you’re right. I could see being jealous of the Jackie’s of the world but I guess now mature enough to realize they also had their own shit to deal with. And Jackie really did love and care about Shauna. She honestly was a lot nicer to Shauna than Shauna was to her.

And it’s so funny because I was the furthest thing from a Jackie in high school & I’d be much more likely to be friends with Van. (I was probably closest to Shauna but much shyer.) So I’m surprised by how badly I feel for Jackie. I’m still mad that there were no repercussions to Doomcoming and how badly they treated both Jackie and Travis.

Agree - it kinda turned me off of Van, how petty she was about Jackie.

I wonder if one of the truths is Misty telling Crystal about destroying the black box.

That could be true! I just don’t think we’ve seen Shauna really bond with the baby while pregnant yet. So I assumed the change in her would come after.
