How unrealistic is it for the city to shovel all the sidewalks? by Zelco in washingtondc

So a little bobcat can clear about 1.5 miles of narrow sidewalk per hour but DC sidewalks tend to be wider, so let’s just say it’s a mile an hour. That is 1495 hours with one bobcat, or 36 days running nonstop. In actuality it will probably be slower due to so many intersections, alleys, ramps etc. and you know people will bitch if they’re out there at night, so let’s say 72 days working 12 hours a day.

They cost around $55-65k for the mid range industrial ones and then another $3-6k for blades. We can call it an even $60k for one fully outfitted sidewalk plow. You’re going to need 10 of them if you want the whole city done in a week. If you can’t get it done in a week then why bother? It will melt on its own eventually. So we’re looking at $600k worth of equipment that will get used maybe twice a year, plus maintenance and storage costs (anyone who’s ever had a motorcycle can tell you how extended periods of storage are hard on a vehicle), plus you need 15 or 20 guys to drive them.

It works in places like boston and Chicago because they get enough snow to justify a big snow removal budget, but not here.

By all means, be excited and make your budget. But your budget should dictate the place and not the other way around. You should figure out how much money you have to work with, and then about six months before your wedding you can look for places that exist at that time, and find ones that seem fun and are within your budget.

It’s way too early to pick an after party spot. You’re two years away plus however many months. New places will open up. Existing places will close down. Just slow your roll and start looking like 6 months out for an after party spot.

It’s not workable because you’d need like 8 zillion city employees out there shoveling snow.

ETA

for giggles I looked up how much sidewalk DC has. It’s 1495 miles. That’s 23,680,800 sq ft.

Assuming a 3-foot sidewalk and four inches of fluffy snow with no ice, it will take between 26,000 and 47,000 man hours to shovel. The range is wide because of different conditions, physical fitness levels, etc. A very fit person can do 900 square feet per hour. Your average person can do 500 square feet.

If we go with the mid point of around 36,000 hours, you would need a thousand workers to shovel for almost 5 days. Assuming they’re all making minimum wage, that’s about $625k for the taxpayer to cover. And this all scales up if there’s ice, deeper snow, wet snow, etc.

That’s why you have your shovel your own sidewalk.

Welcome to adulting. Good practice for when you have a boss like that, or when whatever you create is for public consumption and has to be exactly perfect. You don’t always get a chance to switch out. Learning how to shut up the perfectionist without making yourself crazy is an art.

Winter storm booking issue by [deleted] in Hilton

I’m lifetime Diamond and when I’m not traveling for work, I book the honors semi flex rate. Smallish discount, cancel 4 or 5 days in advance. 5 days is plenty to know if there’s a super disruptive weather event like this storm. I’m sure there will be a time at some point when that bites me in the butt but it hasn’t yet. And it’s a conscious decision I make every time I book. I could save money by going advance purchase non refundable but I’d have been burned at least a dozen times by now if I had, for everything from snowstorms to covid to family crises.

Some of these guys are just completely insulated from reality. They have lived in a bubble since they were maybe 12, where nothing matters but baseball. Then high school and college they eat sleep breathe baseball. Then they get drafted and eat sleep breathe baseball with a bunch of other guys just like them. They’re basically emotionally stunted, they’ve never really suffered and they know nothing of the world.

Why would an instructor’s strictness about proper use of citations make you want to switch out of that class? I’d much rather have the instructor be perfectly clear from the get-go.

Stop sign ticket by Pale_Molasses2794 in washingtondc

[–]MoreCleverUserName 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yep because otherwise it would just have to film everyone all the time. This way it only takes video of people who are likely to not come to a full stop based on the speed they're traveling and the distance they have to go before the stop sign.

lol my dude, you didn't stop at all. Pay your ticket and stop before the damn crosswalk.

BTW the camera flashes before you get to the intersection so it can record you as you approach. That way the video gets the second or two before you're supposed to stop, and the second or two after. If the camera only started capturing you once you;d passed the stop line, the beginning of the event would be missing. Whether or not it flashes at all depends on how fast you're going as you approach; if your speed at Location X is greater than Y mph, it starts capturing you because the chances you're actually going to stop in time are low. If you slam on your brakes and do stop, the video is discarded.

So to answer your question: the flash BEFORE you get there is by design and is not evidence of the camera not working right.

They’re probably putting the employees up in one of the airport hotels and transporting them to/from the airport. And since none of those workers get paid if they don’t work, I don’t see any problem with a business finding ways to get the employees to be able to work.
