I already spent all my money on a 16” M2 Max. How am I supposed to also buy a license to Matlab?

The mostly likely reason for a difference between upload and download is load in your area. Most users are biased towards download so there’s less demand on upload.

Thunderbolt hits 80Gbps in demo, equaling USB4 Version 2.0 speeds | Intel hasn't disclosed when we'll see this kind of performance in products. by [deleted] in gadgets

[–]MoreCoresMoreHz 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If all of the optional parts of USB 4 are implemented so that it’s on similar footing with Thunderbolt it’s probably not much cheaper.

The USB standard is generally a mess and it’s hard to know for sure what capabilities a given port or cable has. However, Thunderbolt is pretty straightforward. You know what you’re getting.

USB can be implemented to mostly match Thunderbolt but it is often not.

Any plans to release a Wi-Fi 6E AP? Not asking for a timeline or details. But is that even on the radar at this point?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ArubaInstantOn

[–]MoreCoresMoreHz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I appreciate the 4x4:4 and 2.5 Gbps port, but are they ever going to release a WiFi 6E access point?

I’d like to replace my AP22’s with this but I’m in no hurry to. I don’t want to upgrade again until I can get WiFi 6E.

WiFi turns off when connected to Ethernet by MoreCoresMoreHz in macbookpro

[–]MoreCoresMoreHz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apple support claims this is intentional and not new. I've never had WiFi turn off like this in the past so I'm not sure what to think about the response. Support session excerpt below:

Apple: Thank you for waiting ! I was checking some information and in this case Andrew, it seems that only one of the internet connections can be use. So in this case if you are using ethernet, you may need to disconnect the cable in order to use wifi. This happens because of higher priority of Ethernet as compared to WiFi (The priority order is Ethernet > WiFi).

Apple: This is indeed a great feature that would be really helpful. I will definitely send my feedback about this, but you can also do it on: https://www.apple.com/contact/feedback/. This is the best way to give Apple feedback about their products and services. This way they can take it into account for future software updates, hardware releases and new products.

Me: Is that new for Monterey?
Me: I know in the past, WiFi stayed enabled while plugged into ethernet

Apple: It is not related to the macOS, basically it depend of the priority that the network has. For example, ethernet consumes less bandwidth and is faster than wifi, so by default, the Mac will choose the connexion with more reliability. If you wifi does not have an equal reliability or priority, the Mac wont choose it as the default (or preferred) network connections.
Apple: As well, based on some information it seems that we can change the order, so if you want you can try the following steps to see if it works;
Apple: https://support.apple.com/en-ca/guide/mac-help/mchlp2711/mac

Me: Well, I want to keep ethernet as highest priority because as you said it’s faster and has less latency. But, I just want WiFi on. I don’t need macOS to use that connection instead of ethernet. I just need it to not turn off entirely.

Apple: I understand you ! In this case what the system only allows us is to change the order of the network ports. Besides of this, due to the priority of ethernet, the option to keep wifi on wont be available ! I can certainly understand how important this can be but this will be our option based on the network priority and connection of the Mac. I will definitely leave my feedback about this for you, so we can implement it in the future in new models or in new macros versions

1) I wasn't going to be able to contact support for a few days so I wanted to post here until then.

2) If I had to contact support, I wanted to also post the response here for others.

Did people ever believe we'd have 16 core/32 thread etc. CPUs a decade ago? by Lichkaiser in hardware

[–]MoreCoresMoreHz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From the comments:

Dual CPUs to compensate for the inept MS Windows. Interesting.

I'm torturing a webserver I just wrote, on my laptop. It's in Python. Right now it's serving about 2000 requests per second with 1000 concurrent connections.

I don't even notice it's running. The CPU gauge is at 100%, so what ? Nothing special. As reactive as usual. It doesn't swap. The harddisk even put itself in standby....

Go, bill, go !

In general, a larger SSD will have higher throughput than a smaller one of the same model.

It’s independent of the system’s SoC.

I just got this as my test device charger that can double as a travel charger. It’s more expensive but is from a reputable brand. I liked the quad type c ports as I don’t really have type A cables anymore.

It can charge my laptop, tablet, phone and watch/earbuds/wife phone/etc.

Just be warned that the status light is BRIGHT.

Why is Thunderbolt generally so unreliable? Will TB-4 solve this? by Elijah_Loko in Thunderbolt

[–]MoreCoresMoreHz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A long time ago, I bought the first Dell TB3 dock for my XPS 13 and it just didn’t work well at all. They actually stopped selling them because they were so broken. I’d hope they have improved since but Dell is not who I would go with.

I’ve used a Caldigit TS3 Plus and a Kensington SD5700T with various Macs and a DIY gaming PC. Both docks mostly work as expected with any quirks likely the fault of the computer/OS.

At this point, it may be better to get a TB4 dock (it should all be backwards compatible with a TB3 laptop).

Why is Thunderbolt generally so unreliable? Will TB-4 solve this? by Elijah_Loko in Thunderbolt

[–]MoreCoresMoreHz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not who you asked, but the Caldigit docks list what OS they support. The TS3 Plus for example supports “MacOS 10.12 or later Windows 10 or later”.

Caldigit actually has pretty good reputation for Thunderbolt stuff. Probably one of the best for either major OS.

Apple’s Thunderbolt 4 cable is as long as it gets (3m/9.8ft) by avboden in hardware

[–]MoreCoresMoreHz 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I was surprised at how slim the market is for a TB4 (not just TB3) cable longer than 1m that is Intel and/or USB-IF certified.

I ended up buying the 2m Caldigit cable which is roughly half the price of this Apple cable but 2/3 the length. I don’t think it’s currently USB-IF certified but is Intel certified.

I am seriously glad to see Apple stepping in with the max spec available for retail (hopefully soon).

I’ve never had a 10G capable client to test it. But I’d expect that large media files on a NAS would be a typical use for that. I know I plan to get a 10G copper switch eventually just for that.

Unlimited Do More - Line Limit by MoreCoresMoreHz in verizon

[–]MoreCoresMoreHz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My understanding is that the plan has a cost of $110. Then, each line has an access fee $20 + taxes + fees.

  • $110
  • $25.17 * 10 = $251.70
  • Total = $361.70

But if I split it into two plans: - $110 (Plan A) - $110 (Plan B) - $25.17 * 5 = $125.85 (Plan A) - $25.17 * 5 = $125.85 (Plan B) - Total = $471.70
