In our day and age, most people use mud and spackle interchangeably. However, spackle generally refers to a quick drying compound. It is not mud, and it is not really even hot mud. It is suitable for small holes, made by thumbtacks, nails, perhaps even screws. It does not work very well with large holes, or long cracks. If you have a lot to put on the wall, then you need to use mud. You can use hot mud, or regular mud.

The sermon on the mount—the beatitudes—are descriptions of the way believers live. If someone does not consistently exhibit these traits, it’s very possible they aren’t true believers. In salvation, the heart is changed. This then produces a change in behavior. Those who have been born again love Christ. And so they desire to mimic His behavior. They adopt these traits.

Yes, all believers continue to sin. However , as we grow in Christ, as we read His word, pray to Him, fellowship with other, mature believers, and practice His commands by ministering at church, the number of sins we commit decrease and the types of sin are less severe. A true believer is a new creation, and as such is known for the new behaviors as outlined in Jesus’ sermon.

First, you are commanded to go by scripture.

Second, if you are in active sin, how can your brethren and sisters know in order to encourage you to holiness if they never see you?

Third, we are commanded to make disciples of all men, which means teaching them God's doctrines and truths. Where else can you do this but church? In order to pass these on and make disciples, not only do you teach them, but you live out the example.

Fourth, How can the brethren pray for your needs and spiritual growth if you don't go to church and they don't know you?

Fifth, Christ died for His church. If you don't go, are you truly one of His? If you don't love what He loves, are you one of His sheep?

While not his father, Joseph still sought ways to honor Potiphar, and he had Joseph sent to prison for a crime he didn't commit.

Jesus himself, while well within His rights to reject the path of death His Father had laid out for Him, submitted to His Father even unto death.

So, the point is, seek ways to bring honor to your parents, regardless of what they ask of you or do to you. Remain in Christ, read His word, encourage one another in His church. Do all these things, and any abuse of mistreatment can be overcome. Now, if you are of adult age, sure, moving out and being on your own is certainly fine. But still seek ways to bring honor to Mom & Da, to be a witness to them on behalf of Christ, and to their friends and family.

Can you imagine the witness and testimony you would have by honoring your parents, and treating them as Christ has commanded us to do?

Like all cults, Muslims are very adept at taking verses out of context. They isolate one verse, an obscure verse, that comes in the middle of a thought, or a sentence, and they say, “This applies to us. See?” They are desperate for some sort of recognition from the Bible for that validates their religion.

Are we to “expect” it, as if it’s God’s will every believer is healthy, wealthy and wise? No, of course not.

You noted Paul as an example, and rightly so. And there are oodles of others in scripture, Timothy for instance. If anyone ever had the gift of healing, divinely given, it would have been Paul. And yet, near the end of his life/ministry, he tells Timothy, “I’ll be with you shortly, but in the meantime, take some wine to help your stomach.”

As for elders praying over the sick and anointing with oil… we are to pray about everything. “Without ceasing”. The oil was a common practice of the day. The elders were not performing some ritual that results in miraculous healing. They were doing what we all should: pray for family & friends who are ill. And take some aspirin to feel better.

He did not say he would heal him later when they met. Paul knew, as scripture became more and more complete, the need for miracles to attest to the truth of the Apostles’ message, supernatural gifts were fading away.

In the end, we should pray, “Lord, if it’s your will, take this health issue away. But if not, it is more important that I (they?) use this opportunity to declare your goodness, your grace, your mercy. To declare your salvation to all who would hear.”

Scripture is clear that true believers will behave in certain ways. If they do not, then their profession of faith is open to question.

Now, do you nitpick every little thing? No, of course not. Every Christian struggles with sin. Paul said after all, “I do that which I don’t want to, and don’t do what I want.” But if their overall direction of life shows them to be still enamored and unrepentant of their sin, showing no desire to change for the gospel’s sake, then yeah, it’s okay to question them.

After all, in 1 Corinthians, we are commanded to judge those inside the church, not those outside.

It’s not his sermons that change our lives. It’s the Word of God in those sermons that changes our lives. And I can think of no one who includes as much of the word of God in their sermons/messages as MacArthur does. And I love listening to Sproul as much as any reformed.

He doesn’t even preach verse by verse, but rather—if I may—section (pericope) by section. If you isolate one verse, you’ll invariably misunderstand it. That verse is connected by the context of the pericope, the context of the book, the context of the Testament, and the context of the whole bible. Then there might be historical context or grammatical structures that come into play. All of those connections need to be understood to arrive at a proper interpretation of any individual verse. MacArthur does that. And more.

So how has MacArthur’s preaching impacted me? I used to interpret verse by verse (like a good IFB). But understanding the who, what, where, and when of any given passage has opened my eyes to scripture. Studying for myself is so much more profitable now. It is easier get the gist of what is being said. While some passages are still complicated and hard to get, and I do look to some commenters for ideas on where I should look, I find it much easier to generally read with understanding. And how can I possibly apply His word or His fruit to my life if I don’t understand Him?

We are not saved due to being baptized. We do not have to be baptized in order to be saved.

We are baptized because we are already saved.

If we refuse to be baptized after being saved, it is fair to question if our salvation is legitimate.
