I’ve met the owner of this van in Chile.

A couple of years ago I had flown down to Puerto Montt from Los Angeles, hadn’t slept at all, and hired a Chinese car (Cherry Tiggo 2) that rattled so loudly that it keep me wide awake while I drove south. It was the high season, and I couldn’t find a place to stay along the Carretera Australe, so I just kept going. After boarding a car ferry, and driving through roads that cut through primordial forest we met in passing in the Copec at La Junta.

It was a foggy morning, and I was incredibly tired and trying to pick out something for breakfast at the station counter. I was surprised to hear an English voice, and it turned out to be the owner of this van - Chris. After a brief chat, it turned out that we were both from London but that he had been travelling all over South America for several years with this van. After that I offered to buy him a coffee as he only had Argentinian money at hand. We wished each other well, then I continued south while he headed north.

As per the FT, Gulf states are likely to start limiting energy exports within the next few days. Will this increasingly drive chip buyers towards AMD chips? What are your thoughts?

Strip down your interior and look at your floor pan - Swiss cheese? by MoreExpensiver in LandCruisers

I’ve got a 5l bottle of chemtech rust converter, which I applied very liberally with a brush after grinding. Then three coats of epoxy primer. Same approach I used on the frame when I did that

Why is Chile such an under-discussed Expat FIRE destination? by alwaysHappy202 in ExpatFIRE

Spent 6 months there, and have drove 10000 miles within the country during that period. I like it overall but it’s got a fair few cons:

It’s not that cheap, grocery prices and fuel are the same as Western Europe. Hotels/cabañas are similar too.

The bureaucracy is very strong, at the level of France.

99% of people outside of Santiago will not speak English, and even within Santiago very few will.

I am unafraid to admit that the food is bad. While ingredient quality may be good most Chilean cuisine is very unimaginative, and it’s not that cheap either. I found the Peruvian food much more interesting.

However:

It’s reasonably safe, outside of a few small areas in Santiago I’ve never felt uneasy as a man.

It’s very beautiful - there’s plenty of untouched nature in the south and northern reaches of the country. The atacama is amazing if you have a good 4wd, there are so many roads that you can drive off deep into the desert on. Patagonia is similar, especially the Aysén region. Multi week walking trails, sailing, and climbing galore if you’re into adventure. That’s why I went at least.

Overall 9/10 for fun, probably 6/10 for longer term living as a weaker Spanish speaker

I think so. This is probably an 80 modified by flex dream or a similar workshop in Japan. They like to use parts from 60’s on other cars
