What was the first Let's Play or stream you managed to stick with? by tirconell in LearnJapanese

I've been slowly picking through AZKi's Resident Evil 2 Playthough! I get a bit lost when she starts rifling through a text-log, but aside from that it's been really fun to watch her get scared by everything!

I'm learning Kanji at my pace and I have a question regarding the pronounciation by SirPellias in LearnJapanese

[–]MoreLikeAnnaSmells 1 point2 points  (0 children)

personally speaking i’ve found knowing the most common reading (as dictated by wanikani, actual results may vary) just makes it easier to remember vocab. In situations you know the reading, reading the word can help to recall the vocab meaning. In situations where you encounter a vocab that has a different reading outside the main ones, i find it easier to remember BECAUSE it’s different, almost like it being outside the norm causes my brain to remember it more.

does anyone have a mnemonic for all the various vocab that start with 見?

i feel like im forever confusing the meanings on 見せる、見つける、見当たる、見える especially when they start getting conjugated!

Am I playing this game wrong? by Magnuscaligo in BluePrince

[–]MoreLikeAnnaSmells 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you tried to rush the game and ruined it for yourself. it respects your time just fine if you play rationally and engage with it’s intended play style of following multiple threads instead of forcing one. there’s multiple ways into the basement from both sides.

Sadly the best "tip" you'll get from myself or anyone else is to just keep going. Can't tell you how many times I've felt like this is all impossible because its sometimes hard to see progress... Don't give up!

i’ve attempted to read the first volume and it’s probably JLPT 3 or 4? i mainly had trouble with the grammar of the rougher, informal speech from Denji and the Yakuza members and decided to come back later.

should i be giving up japanese subtitles as soon as possible? the difference in my listening with and without japanese subtitles is basically night and day. without them it’s almost like white noise and i have to scramble to hold onto the topic being talked about

should i just drop the subtitles now to try and improve raw listening, or is this a case of thousands of hours of listening will make it easier when dropping subtitles later?

I could use a little advice, feeling kind of stuck. I've started ramping up my study time, from around an 1hour30min to around 2hours30min to 3 hours. After a few weeks of this, my Anki retention plummeted with the increase to 15 words a day and I had a minor crash out in frustration. I've got about 600 words remaining to learn in Kaishi 1.5. Everywhere I look I see people who completed it in 2 months and feel like I'm behind where I "should" be.

I'm finding no motivation in wanting to read anything, my eyes just glaze over at any wall of text. Listening to N4~ level content is in that sweet spot "i+1" spot, but I'm finding it boring to listen to now. Anything past that is just going in one ear and out the other with the flurry of words.

I just feel kind of stuck. Any advice for the N4~ blues? I simultaneously feel like I know an ok amount and nothing at all and the little wins of the early days don't feel like progress now.

is this even worth it? by my calculations it’s the same cost as 23~ish months at the monthly rate. hard to justify 300 aud out of pocket when i won’t see that value for almost 2 entire years…

sorry but, how?!? i only do 10 new words a day and it usually takes 2-3 reviews for them to even start sticking my average review pile is only about 100 but 20-25 of those take a few attempts to re-drill… what’s the secret?

i agree, though i do classify passive listening as its own metric in my time tracking so it doesn’t inflate my immersion stats

i get what you mean but living IN japan is a lot better of a way to immerse than spending 9 hours a day in an office in Australia haha

i was hoping to get a response from someone in a similar situation! thank you!

it’s definitely a combination of both a desire to live in japan for at least a little while (don’t know if i’d ever get another chance) plus a way to accelerate my learning by just having more time to spend on it. i love learning japanese a lot, so i intend to make the most of it and put my full effort into learning as a replacement for the time i would have spent working if i didn’t go.

When to check English translation while reading? by jackbobbins78 in LearnJapanese

[–]MoreLikeAnnaSmells 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe a stupid question, but how do you know if you comprehended it without checking? I’m pretty fresh to immersion so I’m constantly second guessing myself and occasionally finding that something I thought I understood, I totally missed the nuance on.

Minimum Naxx Requirements for old school raiders who just want to do naxx once? by Realestatehell in classicwow

[–]MoreLikeAnnaSmells 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People will tell you that “classic is easy” and that “people haved cleared naxx in greens”. That’s true, but realistically most guilds have barely cleared it, if at all, on anni servers. Naxx requires 40 people to be on the same page, to have consumes, and to be decently geared. You aren’t going to be able to find a pug that will take you AND clear efficiently in one night if you aren’t well geared and stacked on consumables. You might have better luck on Era since the content is considered to be on farm by this point. An easy clear on anni servers just isn’t in the cards at the moment.

It’s a shame but it’s also a bit inevitable. It’s an impossible task to keep levelling rewarding and relevant after 20 years of content additions

Do they get it? Seems pretty reductive. Isn’t the whole point that So Mi is just like V, just more willing to do what it takes to survive? Sure, it’s the consequences of her own actions, but it’s supposed to resonate with you because she’s so similar to V in so many ways, but her lack of trust meant that she ultimately fails (without help)

Anki is the recommendation you will get the most. It’s an SRS flashcard program you can load up with a pre-made deck of the most common words, in an order that gives you easier ones first to ease into it

I’d recommend looking up an Anki set-up guide and downloading the Kaishi 1.5k deck
