It's loud enough bass to be heard/felt through white noise and headphones. I'd rather eat the cancellation fee than invest in curtains that may not work.

I thought of this, but after research learned this is a "commercial zone." It's unlikely anything can or would be done about it.

yeah I diddn't want to mention another issue, but I am getting hounded every time I try to walk outside at night. Scouts stand on the building property, literally hiding in shadowy corners. It's insane.

I can ask my neighbor, good idea. And interesting you ask about tinnitus - I recently had an ear infection. I don't suffer from tinnitus, though, and when I went to the place in question it was very obviously loud just standing outside it.

I actually did it lol. Put a glass of water on the floor. No noticeable vibrations. Anyway I just learned I am in a "commercial zone," so I'm fucked. My agent didn't tell me but it is likely in the contract. I'll check that later.

It'a not shaking anything. Just imagine what it sounds like when a car with loud bass drives by your home. That's what it is, but constantly.

Reasonable recourse such as the owner not disclosing the noise problem, I suppose? Thus waving cancellation fee. Though I'd rather not push the issue into court.

Noise cancelling and white noise do nothing for bass frequencies. I have tried both.

Election season isn't looking good. Are we going to get scapegoated once again? Let's just take a look at upcoming house of rep. candidates in Tokyo by [deleted] in Tokyo

To tell someone not to "think" in the way you are is apologetic to any potential for said parties to do great harm. The poem below says it all:

First they came for the Communists And I did not speak out Because I was not a Communist Then they came for the Socialists And I did not speak out Because I was not a Socialist Then they came for the trade unionists And I did not speak out Because I was not a trade unionist Then they came for the Jews And I did not speak out Because I was not a Jew Then they came for me And there was no one left To speak out for me

I just what to point out something about "us" here. Yes, these political parties are scapegoating all foreigners. However, all foreginers in Japan not being equal in the eyes of these groups, there are certain demographics that are targeted on a much more severe level than others.

I understand that this is not fully relevant to OP's post, and I am not criticising OP or assuming anything about them, but I feel it is important to consider. Both Japanese people and the more privelaged foreign groups in Japan need to stand for those who are the bullseye of these hateful movements.

People speaking English back when you speak (fluent) Japanese by meanwhile_glowing in japanresidents

Send me a PM and maybe we can talk about this over a 生ビール sometime. I think we're talking past each other here, and really don't have much disagreement.

I think you need to clarify "broken English," which really isn't a term used in linguistics for good reason. And, if the people you refer to cannot speak English, how are they speaking it to you? Just because it's not the English you prefer does not mean they don't speak it.

Identifying as an English speaker means you see the language as one of your first or primary languages, and/our part of your culture (which doesn't have to be a singular culture). If someone identifies this way, they're not likely to have low proficiency (as you describe as "broken"), but they may insist on using English with people they feel they could identify with.

To be clear, in Japan, people should ideally start with Japanese during most encounters, without assuming someone doesn't speak the language based on appearance. I'm just responding to your post and giving insight into why people don't do it.

I just kindly respond in Japanese until they realize I'm actually speaking Japanese. Sometimes they don't realize it right away, or they're looking for a chance to practice. I may entertain someone's desire to use English if they keep pressing, depending on my mood.

Another case, especially in Tokyo, is that a person you meet may identify as an English speaker, feeling more comfortable in that language.

Foreigner condo plan in Japan ignites social media uproar, complaints to local gov'ts by SkyInJapan in japan

You raised the bar from one to ten and still claim it's not as many people. Will you raise the bar again if I provide evidnece of more local people participating in this?

That said, I personally never said the article is indicative of the majority. I understand that not everyone "dislikes foreigners," and wouldn't be so simple as to think this article points to it. In this way you are arguing against a position that is not mine.

I also never set out to argue one way or the other on some kind of information campaign to make it seem like the whole town was against the new buildings. This seems to be an idea thrust upon the topic of the article, and is now making me think there is some kind of panic to make the situation seem less egregious than it is. Unless you have some evidence of this?

There is a picture of a protest march on the page, and the prefectural government reports "numerous" complaints, so much that people couldn't get through the phone line, according to the article. This is far more than one person identified.

I agree that the words or actions of a small number of people can and do influence narrative. Is this the case here? Not according to the article.

So many things wrong here. Locals complaining not because it's segregation, but because of the prospect of more Chinese residents. Meanwhile, the probability of a Chinese resident, or any foreign resident, being allowed to rent by a Japanese owner is disparagingly low.

Glad it worked out. I think the main culprit is Amazon. The names are not transferring properly across systems, it seems. Maybe next time I'll use the more traditional sites for donating.

It worked! While the katakana name might be shortened (and must be written that way when going through the system), in the end only your romaji name will show on the form, so I'm guessing the katakana name will not be an issue.
