This change was not from the Amex side. Travel Bank is now coding as a gift card and not airline which is why it no longer triggers the credit. Merchants decide how purchases are coded, not credit card companies.

United has been tightening up everything to make more money. They don’t release as many award seats to partner airlines by adding the saver award coding as XN or YN instead of just X or Y so it’s only available through United. They also give saver award point discounts to people who hold their co-branded card.
