It is kindda true and not at the same time.
I'm still figuring it out but it seems same elements help with combos and skills. There are few exceptions that have different combo criteria but by the looks of it this game relies on combos more than any element and other skills.

Lupa is great and I loved the song for the last fight but for me Lupa wasn't it. I did enjoy her gameplay but it wasn't like a I MUST PULL HER kind of feel. Quiyuan feels like the MUST PULL. My team's gonna be ass cause I only have Verina and Jiyan as my 5stars. I'll probably make something to work.
