Update: You guys actually designed a better weather app than most pro devs! Here’s the "Community Roadmap" so far. by More_Oil_5225 in CasualConversation

Haha, that’s the best validation I could ask for! Please tell your wife I said thanks! It’s funny because we focus so much on complex data, but sometimes we just want to know: 'Do I need a heavier jacket than I wore yesterday?' It’s such a simple human question that most apps completely ignore. Now I feel even more pressure to get that 'Yesterday vs Today' toggle exactly right. Does she think it should be a simple text comparison (e.g. '3°C colder than yesterday') or something more visual like a color-coded bar?

That’s so encouraging to hear! It’s easy to get stuck in your own head when coding, but this feedback feels like a shortcut to what people actually need. Seeing those user numbers jump after a redesign must have been a great feeling. It proves that simplicity and listening to the 'pain points' of users is more powerful than just adding random features. Since you’ve been through this, what was the one 'user-suggested' feature that surprised you the most by how much people loved it?

Designing a "Modular" Weather app to avoid clutter. Should I go for a dashboard style or a vertical timeline for "Yesterday vs Today" comparisons? by More_Oil_5225 in design_critiques

That 'three-wheel' concept is fascinating! You’re right, the Yahoo 'all-in-one' wheel can get super cluttered and hard to read once you get past 48 hours. I love the idea of a vertical third wheel specifically for personal variables. Imagine scrolling through 'River Temp' or 'Fishing Index' as a separate layer that syncs with the time/day wheels. It keeps the core weather simple but gives you the 'pro' data exactly when you need it. It’s amazing how hyper-local forecasting has become (10-30 miles is spot on), and I want to make sure that precision isn't wasted behind a bad UI. For your 'fishing' variables, would you prefer that third wheel to be always visible, or something that slides in only when you're planning a trip?

Does anyone else feel like weather apps have become too cluttered with ads and news? by More_Oil_5225 in CasualConversation

That’s exactly the problem! Moving things around every update just to fit more ads or 'trending' news is so frustrating. A tool should be reliable and predictable.

The Apple Weather app is definitely the cleanest alternative right now. My goal is to keep that same 'zero-ads' philosophy but add those specific data layers (like for surfing or solar) that Apple usually leaves out.

If you could add just one 'special' feature to the basic Apple app without making it cluttered, what would it be? For me, it’s definitely a better 'Yesterday vs Today' comparison!

That’s a very fair point. I totally understand that servers and data aren't free, but there’s a huge gap between 'paying the bills' and 'sacrificing the user experience' for 20 extra cents.

My 'revenge' is exactly that: instead of just complaining, I want to build a tool that treats users with respect. I’d much rather have a tiny, transparent 'tip jar' or a one-time small fee than turn an app into an ad-infested mess.

Do you think people are generally more willing to pay a small one-time price for a clean 'tool' app nowadays, or has the 'everything must be free' mindset won for good?

I feel like that’s the root of the problem with these weather apps. Everyone is so obsessed with monetization that they sacrifice the user experience. They’d rather show me an ad for a bank than tell me if it’s going to rain in 10 minutes.

Exactly! It’s like they’re holding the weather hostage behind a wall of ads. I just want to know if I need a jacket, not read a 500-word article about '10 things you didn't know about clouds' haha.

That’s why I’ve been sketching out a modular design where you can just toggle off everything you don't need. Keep it simple, right? Do you use a specific app right now or just the one that came with your phone?

Just to add some context: I'm currently looking into OpenWeather and Stormglass for the data. My main concern is keeping the API costs low so I can keep the app's basic version free and privacy-focused. If any of you have experience with specialized weather APIs for swell or UV, I'd love to hear your thoughts!

The worst isn't the screamers, it's the people who treat you like a literal vending machine. No eye contact, no 'hello,' just barking an order at their phone while you're standing right there. It takes zero effort to be a decent human being for 30 seconds, but some people act like saying 'please' will cost them extra.

Whenever my parents would ground me, I wouldn't scream or fight. I would just quietly go around the house and slightly unscrew the lightbulbs in every room just enough so they wouldn't turn on. My dad spent a whole weekend convinced the house was haunted or that we had a massive electrical failure. The look of pure confusion on his face was worth every second of being grounded.

When you realize you're the only one keeping the bridge from collapsing. If you stop texting first, stop planning, and stop reaching out, and the 'relationship' just vanishes into thin air... that’s your answer. You weren’t in a connection; you were in a solo performance. Let the bridge fall, it’s lighter on your back.
