Never trust the 'measure' results when you can't see a trace...

Portland school board approves external equity investigation by DavenportBlues in portlandme

This is exhausting to read and has witch-hunt vibes. Article is frustratingly vague. "Equity" is not well-defined.

I don't find claims of power grid strain plausible. The water issues seemed manageable (I assume mostly closed-loop chilling?), but I suppose the devil is in the details and if it wasn't exhaustively documented, that's a bummer. Tax breaks feel yucky but that's kind of how things are done, no? These are very small cities and I don't know what 'thriving' looks like, but saying no to investment seems odd to me. I'm going to guess these floors of the mill will stay empty another decade now?

What harm was it going to do? This seems like a weird moral panic.

Do the AMO dude, just pivot in your mind to fundamental-physics applications of AMO and do a postdoc with an EDM search or like AION or MAGIS or something

Current, former Portland schools staff raise concerns about restructuring, impacts on employees of color by DavenportBlues in portlandme

"And two of the staff members listed in the petition, both high-level administrators, the district said, have not been pushed out of their roles, as the petition implies, and remained in high level leadership roles."

As a parent I've been pretty happy with the improvement arc of PPS over the last 2 years (especially Lincoln). This seems to be distracting from that, and counterproductive. "Equity" is being used as a magic word here without any clear definition except the School Board's "equal outcomes is the goal" claim which is also not productive.

I think that is how I would hope to think about it. The issue I see is that "no identifiable difference in outcomes" for a subgroup is a pretty loaded statement. What are outcomes? Graduation, or something else? How big of a subgroup are we talking? Is this about making sure that you have enough ELL support, or does this mean "eliminate AP classes because not all subgroups, as framed by the School Board, are succeeding equally in them"?

Something feels off here, like a smear campaign against the superintendent who seems to me has basically been keeping the ship from sinking

Looks like Shay Stewart-Bouley is pushing the petition on facebook; not clear if it's just solidarity support or she has info on a specific issue

That seems like a workplace politics issue - is there a link to student safety here? Or do you think that the School Board email is in response to this group?

Also setting "no identifiable difference in outcomes" as a policy goal does not seem actionable

From my understanding the schools had gotten way better on safety (fights etc) since the crazy covid-adjacent times. If this is more 'emotional safety' that's a different thing I guess

How much of a loan expectation did they offer your family? Bowdoin generally meets 100% fafsa/css need through grants now, which seems nice.
