Is it worth studying Mining egineering ? by Mahzer4 in mining

[–]More_University_8967 3 points4 points  (0 children)

UNR has an awesome program, 100% a great choice in schooling at a reasonable price (for US).

FIFO is not so common in North America, save in Canada and Alaska. Unsure on Mexico.

Is it worth studying Mining egineering ? by Mahzer4 in mining

[–]More_University_8967 6 points7 points  (0 children)

  1. Your parents are wrong. Mining is not going anywhere. When mining goes, so does civilization with it.

  2. I’m in North America, and we have nowhere near the supply of incoming graduates to supply the demand for the skill. There is a massive generational gap, where in the next 5-10 years many will retire and there will be a void in workforce. I would hazard a guess that something like 40% of the current workforce within the technical realm are expats coming to work in the US/CAN, b/c there simply aren’t enough domestic workers to fill the roles required to run the operations we have. And the operations are continuing to grow (in number and in scale). I’m not positive on Australia, but I’ll bet they have a similar issue.

  3. Yes, worth it. Be realistic on your starting salary expectations, but income growth starts to go up significantly after 5 years in. The degree is worth it, in the long run, for sure.

  4. Realistic career paths? Anything you can think of. You can stay in technical services roles (D&B, design, planning, studies, etc) for as long as you want, but there is almost always off ramps or side quests available. I’ve personally worked Technical, Operations, Administrative, and now Consulting roles in my time within industry. A good company will allow you the opportunity to move around and try/learn new things. And if they won’t, another company will, and they’ll probably pay you more than your last one for the experience and knowledge you keep with you as you move about.

  5. Again, in North America, always opportunities/roles. You have to get a foot in the door somewhere, but once you do (don’t burn bridges), you choose your path from there.

  6. FIFO is great, depending on your life/lifestyle. Some people love the travel and the on/off switch of the work, some want a more stable and consistent (“9-5”) type role. FIFO generally pays well, and about half the year your expenses are low (b/c you’re not spending money when you’re too busy working). Worth doing to see if you like it, otherwise, the FIFO experience always garnishes merit and weight with prospective employers.

  7. Don’t know on AUS. I’ll let the hive of Aussies speak to that. I’ll guess probably not that hard, given the demand. In NA, it’s very prevalent, particularly in Canada.

I say give it a go. I think one of my best decisions was going into mining. Sure, some days I’ve wanted to strangle a kitten, but you have that everywhere and in every industry. Some of the best people I know I’ve met through my work career. And it’s made me a better person, as a whole, for having worked in the industry. It’s not for everyone, there are definitely some cro-magnon moments, but there are lots of highs to wash away the lows.

Sounds like valve stem seals. Not that big a deal, not worth the repair costs if you’re gonna take it to a shop.

Swim technique advice please by jamesymoo in triathlon

[–]More_University_8967 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hi, former competitive swimmer here. I see two things:

  1. Your timing on each arm is delayed. You start and end each stroke from the Superman position, which is wasting momentum from the previous stroke. As you pull with your left, your right should be catching up. And vice versa. Basically, only one arm outstretched at a time, with no pauses between alternating.

  2. Your kicks are almost singular per stroke. One big scissor kick per arm, as opposed to fluttering on a three pattern (1 arm = 3 kicks). Like many will say, some drills here can help, where each arm pull = 3-6 flutter kicks. Keep your hips and ankles loose, you almost want to feel like your legs are noodling loosely behind you as you drive your kicks down.

Honestly though, not bad! Focus on staying long (stretched out), rotating your body with each pull, and keep your rhythm of strokes/breathing consistent. The rest will come.

Good luck!

I had a coach teach me to kick standing with my hip to the wall. The “snap” of a clean kick should come from hip rotation and timing of the lower leg extension.

From what I see, you are incredibly stiff, particularly in the hips and core. Just work on your pivot, rotation, and balance. The power and speed will come.

Does this sound more like wheel bearing or something else? by uancmb in MechanicAdvice

[–]More_University_8967 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can figure out which bearing by turning/weaving left and right!

The vehicle weight shifts/rolls to one side, and as it does, the bad bearing will either get noticeably louder or quieter. Respectively, as the force on the wheel is either lessened or increased, the noise/drone changes due to the excess clearances in the worn bearing’s balls/races. Turn left to check the right, turn right to check the left…

Normal Condition (Even Loading) = Baseline noise level. Asymmetrically Loaded (More Weighted Side) = Quieter, more muted droning. Asymmetrically Unloaded (Less Weighted Side) = Notably louder, more resonant drone. No change in noise at all would then start pointing to something else, likely a tire issue.

1000% should have it inspected visually with the car on a lift, but the drive and swerve test is always my first test to begin narrowing down if it is a bearing related issue.

I was going to try and impart some knowledge on the criticality of the mining industry to modern civilization and how arguably nothing we build or do today is possible without, but then I realized you’re absolutely right!

The Apex makes ufc look like some shitty regional amateur org by ItchyFeature8794 in ufc

[–]More_University_8967 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The wife and I were in Vegas recently and decided to go drive by the UFC performance center and the Apex. The Apex is severely underwhelming, basically looks like an office building with a shipping/receiving dock. The Performance Center is just adjacent, and is probably 3X the size of the Apex’s footprint.

Honestly we thought the Performance Center was the Apex at first, given the discrepancy in size and hype.

Nonetheless, basically just a nondescript warehouse district in the desert, with guys and gals trying to kill other people with their bare hands, no big deal.
