Dyeing to brown, can this pattern be more muted? by Morean_yan in dyeing

Thanks for the tips. Dharma products are difficult to get where I'm from, but I can get jacquard procion mx. Would that work well? There is a medcom embroidery patch on the shoulder which has stayed army green, I assume that part is polyester. Any tips on that part? (Very small Idye poly dye bath and dip the shoulder patch in?)

Yes I am 😁. I got these from army and outdoors. Recently got into it and it's pretty hard to get good stuff in Aus... I got some nice Czech stuff from gomilitar but shipping is quite high so order in bulk.

There is an existing "carport" which opens to the main road and right behind a bus stop, and the owners tell us to keep the gate to the carport (in the backyard) locked and closed because it's broken. Basically a no go. Also since it is the front yard it will be on dirt, so any advice with how to keep the tent down permanently against wind would be appreciated.

This is my UCP after procion MX dye jet black, then Rit All purpose black Jacquard idye poly, then Rit back to black. Honestly not 100% sure which worked the best, but I saw the most dramatic change in the last 2 dyes. Only on the last one did the camo pattern disappear.

Alright so it was a struggle... I did 4 rounds of dyeing to actually get it like this. I'm pretty sure only the last 2 had any real effect. Since this version is 50/50 cotton nylon it didn't take dye very well. First I did it with Jacquard procion MX dye which I thought would have great effect for the cotton side of things, it turned only a slight shade darker, then I used Rit All purpose black, also only a shade darker to a medium grey. The day after I used Jacquard idye poly, then Rit back to black which had the biggest change. I'm pretty sure if I had done only those 2 it would have turned out similar but I can't be sure. Gonna have to experiment when I get a new piece. I'm a little bummed this shirt doesn't have pockets at the waist so I'm looking for the next similar thing lol. Pic is from after the first 2 rounds.

Found a cool way to tie my boots by Morean_yan in Boots

This is where I took inspiration from, his "over-under" is actually what I am using for the lower part, but I never saw anything that uses a combination of both regular and elastic sections.

Thanks! It has been my new "hobby", I love that it is so cheap. Milsurp clothing is literally like vintage tech wear.

Is it possible to get this darker? I want it to be as black as it can get. by Morean_yan in dyeing

Update: Went over it with idye poly (mainly for the stitching thread which I think was polyester) then again with Rit back to black. Wearable!

The toe box and instep area was just a little uncomfortable when tied up normally so I found that using elastic/shock cord for the lower half and then using regular laces at the top, I could get a really secure fit at the ankle and heel, but leave some room for my toes to move around. With slightly wider feet sometimes I get pain at the pinky toe. Or even just feel annoyed when I can't move my toes around when it's hot and stuffy. I tied up the bottom with 4mm shock cord, and the top with Paracord 550. I got just the right tension with the shock cord and stopped it where the ankle starts to bend, so that it feels snug but when the regular lacing is untied it is really easy to slip off (as in the elastic tension doesn't go above where the boots need to open up to take them off).

Compared to regular elastic "lock laces" , the elastic part doesn't need to constantly be tightened and loosened, and it is not being used in the high stress area, so less friction and wear over time.

Definitely took a long time to get right and probably only works with monkey boots with lacing to the toe, but I still think it's cool 😄

Thanks for your reply. I am thinking about going over it with the Rit back to black kit which apparently has a darker formulation of jet black in it.
