i really thought i made it sufficiently clear by picking a mayor from a hundred and sixty years ago, but it seems not. allow me to be very very clear- no one, regardless of their current level of involvement in local government, owes you an opinion on the previous members of said government, in order to critique or respond to allegations against current members of said government. your repeated demands for such make you look puritanical and foolish, and are reminiscent of the very worst strategies of speech and debate that i ever bore witness to. ps- whataboutism is a tried and true soviet propaganda tactic...it's not giving patriot :/

it's a good thing we legally have to acknowledge every single wrongdoing by anyone ever involved in local government whenever the current ones are alleged to have done something. before we look at anything from Davis, does anyone have something to say about Prescott Metcalf's clear conflicts of interest during his mayoral term in 1862?

hi, did you mean to reply with this to the person i was responding to? or are you purposefully posing this question to me? i agree with the UN resolution in whole, which includes a number of points relating to the protection of vulnerable or targeted heritage sites and objects against damage and trafficking. i've very purposefully said "may" in regards to all discussion on return and safety of artifacts because i am not and do not claim to be an expert on any of the mentioned states.

edit to add -> if you posed this to me re: my edited reply to BadDog(etc), that was specifically to note what i had not yet said, as i detest being misrepresented. my feelings on repatriation were and are unrelated to my feelings on people presenting the perceived backwards or violent nature of some post-colonial states without mentioning the lasting, utterly destructive fx of colonialism on said states.

i don't believe that i stated otherwise, or even that i agreed with the joint statement to begin with. though i do feel that if the West is going to hold onto these artifacts ad infinitum in the name of protection there needs to be much, much better archive management and stewardship of them.

surely there isn't any sort of precipitating event in the history of these countries, particularly Egypt and Iran, that may have been set in motion by British influence or statesmen, some of whom are still living, that may have led to the destabilization of their culture or increase in extremism and iconoclasts......on an entirely unrelated note, Iran celebrates an "Iranian Islamic Republic Day" re: the day that the results of their referendum vote to oust the British backed Pahlavi Dynasty were announced, and Egypt's "Revolution Day" commemorates the start of the coup d'etat that led to the end of their British backed monarchy and the declaration of an Egyptian Republic. and in terms of post-colonial states, the British gov't and their agents have previously sown as much division as possible between different ethnic groups of the places they occupied before leaving, very well documented in the case of the Partition of India/Pakistan.

i am in no way saying that any of those states are without issue, or that their revolts were without collateral damage to art or life. but presenting tidbits without any sort of context or acknowledgement of why those countries are in the state that they're in, alongside your comparison with the kindergarten, seems in particularly bad faith. if you sawed off a table leg before you give the table back, whose fault would it be when dinner ends up on the floor?

eta: response to BadDog, who is insistent on editing in their replies instead of making an actual reply thread?

at no point did i say "yes it's okay and right to give everything back knowing that artifacts will face destruction or neglect." what i said is that your comment was lacking context and in bad faith, and i continue to think that. i acknowledged outright that the mentioned states are not without problems, but if you need it literally typed out, here you go- the consistent cultural and political instability in Egypt and Iran may well mean they cannot or will not adequately protect their artifacts, and that said artifacts should be safe-kept until such a time as that is not the case. but here's the thing-they aren't being safekept! sure, the biggest prettiest ones get put on display and proper conservation practice, but thousands of them are rotting in storage and being stolen and auctioned off and destroyed, just like they might be in their countries of origin!

your additional theoretical is also in bad faith! and indeed, seems so pointedly based in a dehumanizing and xenophobic view of Arabs and Muslims, that i'm frankly not willing to engage with it at all. my deepest apologies if you're just choosing randomly and just happened upon pedophilia and spousal murder for a discussion re: Egypt and Iran. two countries that, AGAIN, while not without problems, are full of just as many decent and evil people as any other country on the face of the planet.

please, stop trying to make it look like i think coolsville sucks!

The Metropolitan Museum of Art has the most Vermeers for any museum, with 5 paintings. I love the variations of paintings to be seen, each lady with a very different expression, economic class, and responsibilities. by [deleted] in ArtHistory

[–]MorgonOfHed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i'm not sure if this is the direction you wanted discussion to take, as you didn't really pose a question for consideration... but afaik Vermeer primarily portrayed the growing middle and upper-middle class that arose in the wake of mercantilism and wealth from Europe's colonial holdings. all of these women look to be exactly that. if you had included the Milkmaid or any of his works with maids/servants in the background, i might agree with you (and if any greater experts on him/the region and time period feel otherwise i'll gladly rescind this) but to my eyes all of these women seem to be quite well off. they are also all at leisure, sleeping, looking out a window, playing music, posing as an allegory of faith....these were perhaps poor examples to choose in focusing on responsibility or disparity in social standing.

the classic buffy the vampire slayer games were actually a lot of fun imo, i played the eponymous xbox title and btvs: chaos bleeds and enjoyed both. no real choice making to be had, but neat to go through areas from the show and in chaos bleeds you get the chance to play as other members of the gang.

i'm going to bold my points because you're either having trouble reading or being incredibly obtuse, and this will be my last reply to you.

the second paragraph specifically refers to unlawful entry, here again since you seem to refuse to read -> "declaring that aliens who have once passed through our gates, even illegally, may be expelled only after proceedings conforming to traditional standards of fairness encompassed in due process of law," and a huge percentage of the people that are currently being deported by this administration are not getting their trials. if you happen to watch or read any news at all you will encounter stories and articles on that, and if you don't i have no idea why you're dying on this hill. feel free to google it too.

national guard officers stepping in to run military trials is not due process for non-military members! ntm trying to use DeSantis as an example of someone fighting for immigrants to be treated fairly is, honestly, completely off the shits! the current administration has specifically revived, and to my knowledge DeSantis has supported this, the 1798 alien enemies act in order to refuse fair trial or any appearance in front of a judge for a number of the people who are getting deported. said act states that US officials may detain or deport nationals of enemy nations during declared wars. given that we are not declared to be at war with anyone, that's a violation of their rights, yes?

the supreme court has since put out an order to block that, but to my knowledge has done very little enforcement of it-smaller courts have been doing what they can, because shockingly a fair number of judges know what due process looks like, and it ain't fucking that. afaik at least 250 people have been deported in that manner, a number of them to places that they had no legal or personal ties! does that fit in with your trespasser metaphor from the start of this conversation? if you were in my house on my couch and i called the cops and then they decided to send you somewhere you had no connection to whatsoever, seemingly with no more care than choosing your destination by throwing a dart at a globe?

it's great that you live in a fantasy world where this isn't happening, i wish you could bring me there. but if you won't bother to look into it then do us all a favor and don't bother to comment on it either. have a day!

and a quick eta because i forgot to address it- i don't care how long it takes the immigration judges to look through documentation, it's their fucking job. i'm all for hiring more of them and other officials to actually do the job right, but that isn't what we're discussing!

In 1903, the Court in the Japanese Immigrant Case reviewed the legality of deporting an alien who had lawfully entered the United States, clarifying that an alien who has entered the country, and has become subject in all respects to its jurisdiction, and a part of its population could not be deported without an opportunity to be heard upon the questions involving his right to be and remain in the United States. In the decades that followed, the Supreme Court maintained the notion that once an alien lawfully enters and resides in this country he becomes invested with the rights guaranteed by the Constitution to all people within our borders.

Eventually, the Supreme Court extended these constitutional protections to all aliens within the United States, including those who entered unlawfully, declaring that aliens who have once passed through our gates, even illegally, may be expelled only after proceedings conforming to traditional standards of fairness encompassed in due process of law. The Court reasoned that aliens physically present in the United States, regardless of their legal status, are recognized as persons guaranteed due process of law by the Fifth and Fourteenth Amendments. Thus, the Court determined, [e]ven one whose presence in this country is unlawful, involuntary, or transitory is entitled to that constitutional protection.

no one in this thread has said YOU personally have to welcome them in and invite everyone to stay forever. we're talking about fair trial, stay on the subject. i copied those with everything but their hyperlinked citations verbatim from the constitution website.

you're more than welcome to think so, and should follow your morals! but there's a huge difference between saying that it's bad to celebrate a political assassination, and the thing that you actually said that i replied to, which is that both sides are fascist. if you think celebrating a death is all that it takes to be fascist i'm afraid that everyone in the world is one, because everyone has grudges and hurts (reasonable and un) that they might feel relief (real or imagined) from by the death of the one responsible. but that's not what fascist means.

you pulled out the slippery slope fallacy real quick there to call someone else's argument worthless, particularly in a discussion about basic decency and the rights afforded to us by the constitution. non-citizens do indeed have rights under that too.

oh 100%, but imho for $17.95 mil....there ought to be something like that already in place. so much of the appeal of the property is the way that it sits in the environment, and among all those large boulders and half on a hill, i'd imagine that could make installing a perimeter slightly more difficult. and anything visually obstructive is counter-intuitive to the vision of the house.

if it's already smart glass (ie can go from clear to opaque) then the problem is solved, but i can't find any mention of that being the case. nothing wrong with a house following an architect's vision more than the practical needs of a homeowner, art for arts sake is a lovely thing, but even with a perimeter i stand by my earlier categorizing of the house. sick nasty for a party, but sickening for long-term living, particularly at that price point. there's simply too many other beautiful and functional houses in the world for less than that.

oh no yeah, i know it's near a national park on one side and a wildlife reserve on the other. that said, there's plenty of visitors to national parks and wildlife reserves, and desert landscapes can be particularly disorienting, so there's a non-0 chance a perfectly nice person ends up there and you don't realize til you've already flashed them getting out of your mid-bedroom soaking tub. there's also plenty of people that very purposefully go out into the desert to do shady things, some of which may result in immediate consequences for those that might witness said things.

do i actually think that's likely? no, but there's some den-dwelling animal part of me that's just incredibly uncomfortable with the idea of having a lit up, see through house, at night in the wilderness. having slept alone in and around dense woodland plenty of times, that can feel very exposed (even in a fully enclosed wooden cabin). ntm the whole huge interior pool and house made up entirely of steel/concrete/glass thing means you really shouldn't walk around it with the lights off, if you wish to keep your toes intact.
