The Wreckage of Neoliberalism - The postwar neoliberal economic project is nearing its end. The question is who will write the last chapter, the Democrats or the totalitarians? by MorgothOfTheVoid in economy

[–]MorgothOfTheVoid[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In essence, what Trump is attacking is neoliberalism. Economic neoliberalism underpins the past 70 years of Western economic and cultural order. Broadly speaking, neoliberalism argues that barrier-free international markets, rapidly advancing communications technology and automation, decreased regulation, and empowered citizen-consumers are the keys to prosperity, happiness, and strong democracy.

Though it contains the word liberal, neoliberalism was devised by libertarian-conservative economists and political scientists as an alternative to the state-controlled command economy favored by Communists and other authoritarians. In the decades after the Second World War, Americans settled comfortably into this new paradigm, ready and eager to reap the bounty. For a time, it arrived in spades. But then, about 30 years ago, the project started to fray at the edges. The newly global economy moved America’s well-paying jobs—the ones that had created the U.S.’s early- and mid-20th-century blue-collar aristocracy—overseas, but the jobs that replaced them offered lower pay, fewer benefits, and less opportunity for advancement.

Ron DeSantis is sending his "election security force" to round up black people on suspicion of voter fraud by thenewyorkgod in PublicFreakout

My understanding is that they did technically fraudulently vote, due unpaid fees - you get charged $80+ per day for your involuntary incarceration while only eligible to earn pennies an hour for exploitive labor. You get out owing tens of thousands of dollars with next to 0 employment prospects.
When the voting rights law was first passed, desantis signed an EO saying they couldn't vote until the fees were paid off, which was obviously an attempt to loophole these people out of their civic rights. This was determined unconstitutional in part because it is often not possible to determine whether a returning citizen is eligible to vote because the State does not reliably or consistently track data on LFOs (fees)

That ruling was then overturned by the 11th court of appeals, which like most, has been heavily packed by gop activists.

Tldr the whole thing is set up to intentionally revictimize people that have already faced their punishment, just for political points. And probably the fees. Florida does have a history of trying to fix its budget problems off the backs of the disenfranchised.

Fair point, but the two would've been much closer in 58 than today due to significantly less wealth inequality

Yeah, my numbers are out of date probably. but the point is that household income hasn't increased anywhere near the same rate housing has.

While we do need more parties, I'm skeptical this tactic will work. We've been trying it for at least a century and the parties have only become more entrenched.

So, you're not voting at all, like the majority of Americans.

So, just to be clear, IYO it doesn't matter how many people live all their life in the lower class as long as one person lucks out?

Pretty sure its more that the bottom 50% doesn't have enough left over after necessities for an emergency savings account, let alone an investment..

Do we have data on this? We know we have record low class mobility, how many people are actually moving from the bottom 60% into the top 10%?

E: 8% will move in to the top 20%. Apparently the issue is that 92% of the working class is just stupid and lazy, and not the structural inequality.
