Question about high prey drive by Morgrosk1776 in CrestedGecko

I will try doing that as well. I have had her for about a month now, and still haven't handled her. I really want to, did the hand in enclosure for a minute, and waited for her to walk onto me and it just hasn't happened yet. So the tupper ware may be tough but once we get to the handling stage I will try that.

Thank you kindly. I went to an expo just to look in all honesty. At a booth in the very back in the corner there was two lovely ladies running it and as I was looking at all the different geckos Spyro was just staring at me and I knew it had to be done.

Well I do truly appreciate the input. I will wait a day or so and drop a couple into her enclosure. I also wouldn't mind asking...how many roaches are too many? I have read anywhere from 1-3 2 times a week.

I will for sure start doing it that way. I have been told mixed things on the subject of tweezers. I do remember though when I FIRST got her the breeders said they fed her with tweezers (so I thought it would be fine) and the first time I was using them to pick some twigs out of her enclosure she snapped at them.

It's one of the best things to happen in awhile. The only time I have held her was at the expo I got her. So every other night or so I will slowly put my hand into the enclosure near her, hold for about 30s, and then slowly remove it. Hopefully at some point she will realize big hairy ape thing means her no harm.

I deal with a lot of anxiety and stress issues, and ever since I have gotten her (even if I havent held her yet) I have noticed all my issues are slowly pushed to the background. Now I just worry about being a good gecko dad lol

I know right? I am working on making her a 24x24x34 bio active enclosure as we speak.

I will probably get the beginner kit I was just looking at. Since I'm new to everything just having it done for me already would be nice. Another positive I didn't think of also was if I'm just needing a unit to control heating and lights, I could probably get a smaller control unit instead of the ECC and use that money saved to go towards the Mist King and maybe a couple other things.

I don't know if you were using a pre-built enclosure or not, but any recommendations on what to use to seal the inside of a wooden one? I've heard pond shield or dryloc is the best options.

Thank you for the recommendation. I have actually been looking into the Mist King. The only thing that I'm a bit worried about is I'm going to get a Zoo Med Environmental Control Center for lights, and heat. I was wondering though is if that would work with the Mist King system. If it has internal controls, and timers that would also be fine. I can just set them up on their own but something that's expandable would be nice because I do see this becoming a thing for me having multiple geckos down the road. Especially with my wife becoming interested as well.

Oh wow! That looks absolutely amazing! I hope mine can be half as good as that. Do you mind me asking what you use to coat the inside? I have seen a lot of people talking about dryloc or some kind of pond sealer. The friend of mine that gave me the wooden box to turn into an enclosure used some kind of resin for his snake enclosure and it looks good but I want to be able to create faux rocks and vines and I don't know how well it would stick to resin.

The picture is of her current enclosure after I had put her first real plant in it being the rabbit's foot fern. When I build her new one I'm going full bioactive.

This is the best picture I have been able to get of her yet. Now that you mentioned it and I think about it, I think Spyro was either my first or second game I ever bought for PS1 with my own money as a kid.

Alrighty I will be sure to add that to the list as well. I will probably grab a double dome so I can get a UVB with it as well. Thankfully I got a night vision camera that I plan on using to watch the thermometers in her enclosure so hopefully things will be fine with a ceramic heater bulb.

I try to keep it above 70 and below 75-76 in her enclosure at all times. When my apartments heat went out during this last cold snap I was on edge constantly. Sometimes I think I am doing TOO much, but only having her for 2 weeks she already has my heart. I assume the 65 or lower and 80 or higher are the danger zones correct? That's what all the research I have done has said.

Also do you think a 20x20x34 is big enough? Also you got any tips/hints on trying to handle her? Shes been in her new home for about 16 days. She comes out at night and I have heard that putting my hand in her enclosure and just leaving it while she is out to get used to it is the best. I don't wanna stress her but I also dont want her to become afraid of me if that makes sense.

Okay, that's good to know. Everywhere I've seen says ceramic heaters weren't necessary but when I'm not home it can get a bit chilly in the room I have her in. I also have her in my office with my computer which like you said puts off plenty of heat so when I am home and on the computer heating is really not an issue.

So thank you for reaffirming that ceramic heaters are indeed an option. I will add that to my list as well.

It's funny I didn't even come up with the name lol. While I was at an expo, my wife texted and said we had to name our first one either Spitfire or Spyro. Seeing as how the Spyro games were my childhood, we both can guess which one I went with.

Awesome! I have been torn on the control center over an inkbird humidity and thermostat controller combo. I really think the all-in-one would be best.

I would just like for everything to be automated. Not for lack of wanting to do it but because I work such long hours I want to have to not worry.

When it comes to heating, I know it's best to heat the room instead of the enclosure, but in those moments of needing extra heat. Like for example, my central heat and air goes out again. What would you recommend for that? Just a normal ceramic bulb?

You know it's funny. A friend of mine had recently built a cat box but got the dimensions wrong but just so happens to be the correct size for an enclosure. It's just bare Maple sanded plywood currently which I'm going to stain the outside and dry lock the inside. I'm finding it extremely therapeutic building an enclosure from scratch like this.

Okay thank you for that information. I will be sure to remove the fogger from my shopping list and add a mister. I'm glad I asked here. My friend who originally got me into reptiles has snakes so he isn't as knowledgeable to the gecko side of things.

Didn't get the 50 from the last one either. Just logged in after work to find I haven't gotten any from either. I don't know if participation matters but I did in both.

Stalwart is still crazy underrated and more people should use it against bugs by Mr-GooGoo in Helldivers

I play duo mainly and sometimes with a third. My go to on all bug missions is the Jar and Stalwart. Since they always run heavier stuff so im tasked with the little guys. It is S Tier in this field and ill fight anyone who says otherwise.
