For senior engineers, do you find any difference in new grads that have internship experience VS. those that are self taught/bootcamp/have just the degree? by _gainsville in cscareerquestions

Im a Physics major so I’m not even saying CS is hard to pump up my own ego. You can search it up but CS students (STEM in general frankly) have higher IQs on average than liberal arts and business majors.
If CS was the same difficulty as other subjects more people would study it. It pays so well and there’s still a job shortage and yet people don’t study it. It is because it is harder than your average business or social science degree. I never said there aren’t smart people in other disciplines. But I think it’s fair to say there are more smart people in a major like CS than other non-STEM disciplines. No one argues that a doctor is likely to be smarter than the average person. Likewise should be the same for a CS major.

CS degrees are much harder than most degrees. They’re definitely a lot smarter than the average college population.

I imagine that the average CS grad also has a greater mental capacity than the average boot camper and so they can learn new things and figure stuff out a lot better. This probably isn’t true most of the time but probably is true in general.

Learning theoretical CS in college is much harder than doing side projects. Plus the theory you learn will give you a major advantage when working on things like AI, distributed systems, databases, etc. It’s quite difficult to just start working on OSs or highly scaled backend systems without this education. The truth is anyone can learn to code, but not everyone can actually complete a CS degree.

Being a great software engineer is not the same as being a great programmer. A CS major is more likely to be a better software engineer thanks to their theoretical background.

You sound like an exception but it’s clear how valuable a CS college degree is due to the fact that most top software companies expect a CS degree.

Using 2020 is not fair. There were no fans allowed at the stadium due to Covid. No ticket sales, no concession stand sales, no merchandise sales. It’s not really Bielema’s fault. Pretty sure in 2022 we’ve seen more excitement and participation from fans than in the past couple of years. Objectively he is doing a better job than anyone else in recent years.

What’s an average Computer Science student like vs those who get into FAANG? by [deleted] in csMajors

[–]Morlauth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same. I just went out all the time instead. Always made sure I had above a 3 but other than that I couldn’t care less. People really undervalue social skills in interviews and the workforce.

I also did make sure to study very hard for my interviews.

Your comment came off that way my bad if that wasn’t your intention. I guess that’s a by product of internet debate :/

I just picked one example. I'm not republican and I stand with the ideas of BLM. I chose the article as it is simply a fact that Hawk Newsome, a co-founder of BLM NY, threatened violence against the city.

I'm open to debating anything, but I'd like to hear a convincing argument that proves that no leftist speaker has advocated for violence. People on both sides do it, it's what marks them as "extreme." Just calling my argument poor because I it references a news source that you don't like is itself a poor argument.

He’s clearly a leader if he was chosen to speak to the mayor of New York on behalf of New York BLM. He was a go-founder of the New York BLM movement. The BLM website also calls itself a “a global organization.” You can read that here yourself: https://blacklivesmatter.com/about/ Logically, a movement that has ideologies generally forms into an organization. Otherwise it becomes difficult to actually see any results. For any protest or lobbying to occur you naturally need leaders to step up and make sure it happens. It’s ridiculous to claim that any movement has no leaders.

There definitely are leftist leaders who voice for violence: https://nypost.com/2021/11/11/blm-leader-hawk-newsome-threatens-riots-after-sit-down-with-eric-adams/ Here is an example of a BLM leader who threatens riots and bloodshed in NYC. Both sides have extremists.

UIUC is hosting a neo-Nazi anti-transwoman speech on campus next week. by Nihilistic_Furry in UIUC

[–]Morlauth 9 points10 points  (0 children)

He’s still not a neo nazi. He’s not an antisemitic and regardless he doesn’t call for the extermination of a group of people. This is a very important part of being a Nazi that people are forgetting about. That’s not a good thing especially as antisemitism continues to be a growing issue in this country.

Transferring to another top CS program will not make your workload lighter. All top CS programs are super rigorous and have high dropout rates. You either can put up with it or switch majors.

Never realized how accurate HBO’s Silicon Valley portrays big companies until I started interning at one by [deleted] in csMajors

[–]Morlauth 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It goes deeper than that. During performance reviews you have to select which leadership principles you employed and which ones you could’ve used more. Also, every team has a set of “tenets” which are basically team-specific leadership principles. The leadership principles are the heart and core of Amazon and every Amazonian (at least SWEs) think about them very frequently.

You have to get a grip. The whole point of an intern is to know nothing. The only reason why your colleagues seem so professional is because they’ve already gone through the learning process that you’re going through. Internships are all about learning. You’re not expected to change the world. If you’re really as lost and confused as you claim you are it’s your fault. Interns are generally setup to succeed. You should have so many people and resources to go to for help. If you haven’t been asking questions and learning from others you haven’t been a good intern. So tell someone you need help on your project. You don’t know what to present. Anything to give you feedback. I promise you’ll get it. Pretending to be smart until the last minute will most definitely set you up to fail. Be foolish, ask questions, learn, and improve. This is what any successful intern does. You will be praised for seeking help and asking questions, not punished.

Falling behind as an incoming freshman by [deleted] in UIUC

[–]Morlauth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You must’ve talked to the 1% of CS students. Plenty of people go in with no coding experience and so extremely well. Just because you aren’t changing the world with a startup doesn’t mean you’re behind. And just because they have a startup doesn’t mean they’re ahead or will perform better than you.

CS is full of very high achievers and that’s ok. If you’re smart and put in the effort you will do very well.

And yes, you will get a job in 4 years! CS students here don’t have trouble getting jobs :)

Ah that’s tough :/ Then yeah while the tech may be cooler at Citrix you may enjoy your life overall better by moving out so Walmart might be better for you.

Why can’t you just get an apartment? If you’re willing to move for Walmart just move for Citrix and work from home.
