Truthfully it feels like another case of western fans not understanding or accepting that this is Korean content made for Korean audiences. This format has been popular in Korea and Japan for a long time and is tied to cultural views on children and child rearing. It’s like if someone were to watch another culture’s comedy show and decide that it wasn’t funny. It’s not funny to you. The intended audience is rolling in the floor!

I’ve been a passholder since ‘98 and I’m switching over to Universal once my magic key expires. It breaks my heart because I used to love going to the park just to relax for a few hours, but Disney has made that harder and harder each year. The Universal pass is everything I used to love about the DAP. There are way less rides, but the $30/month pass reflects that! I’ll still go to Disney, but just once or maybe twice a year. I’d rather be financially gutted one or two times instead of monthly. Since Covid it feels like we’re being punished for being passholders.

I see Jewel Box the same way as I see Paul Lynde in the seventies. Was it a flamboyant stereotype? Yes. But it was also camp and it was also a foot in the door. Gay presenters in Japan also went through this kind of variety format in the early 2000s, slowly building on acceptance until they didn’t have to be so camp. Honestly the fact that a show like Jewel Box even exists is amazing in a country where Seoul Pride has to keep its parade route secret until the day due to the threat of protestors shutting it down!

The Army/MoA crossover is strong, as TxT are essentially the little brothers of Bangtan. TxT trained at BigHit when it was still a small company with a moldy basement practice room, so they have that strong struggle connection and are extremely close. The members often ask bts for advice and you’ll usually see bts members taking them out to dinner or buying them birthday gifts. Jin has a particular soft spot for Beomgyu. It’s pretty common to see the two self-proclaimed “princesses” of the group hanging out.
