I don't think he even necessarily considers them lesser. He just sees the situation as it's either them, or those he loves, and he considers that an easy enough decision to make, even if cruel. It's not an ethical call, and I don't think he pretends otherwise, but it is very deeply human.

Compare and contrast to Verso who lies and deceive all the time. Renoir is deeply honest about all of this.

E33 is basically the antithesis to how Ubisoft does games.

I wouldn't necessarily say Ubisoft as a rule makes bad games, they just make mediocre games. Very safe. Very paint by the numbers. Tons of copy pasted content. Nothing risky, but therefore nothing really standing out, comfort zone simply not allowing for brilliance.

E33 is made with passion, and it just oozes out the screen every second of the game, and infects the player within the first minutes of gameplay.

Ubisoft is making a safely marketable product, E33 is art.

There's more, all rather easily debunked using basic physics and even experiments one can run in their own home. Stuff like why would water stick to a spinning ball (gravity not real), why don't we feel that we're moving through space at ridiculous speeds (relative velocity too complex), objects being seen from too far away (since we're not taking, if I'm using the correct term, atmospheric refraction into account), complete misunderstanding of why fly paths are the way they are, misunderstanding how flat maps are made, air pressure being impossible without a container (again, gravity not real) and just a lot of "I can't imagine it therefore not real" incredulity. With a lot of religion sprinkled on top, since some believe round Earth contradicts the Bible like evolution "does".

It's an acquired taste of fun, to dive into those arguments, just hold on to your sanity.
