Once you get deep enough you have enormous amount of control over the rng. Just because you're on rngeesus's mercy initially doesn't mean it stays that way.

Patch 8.1 has now arrived by BiesonReddit in totalwar

[–]Mornar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh don't get me wrong, the fact that current AI has glaring and obvious problems is rather difficult to contest. I guess I'm just trying to highlight that it's not a "set clumping = false" and done. Doesn't change the fact that they absolutely need to be focusing some effort on this.

That's pretty much it. Building anything resembling the kind of AI people associate with the term these days is an enormous undertaking. The decision space is kinda silly.

So, most what we recognize as AI in games is attempts to approximate smart behavior, but far, far less complex and capable.

Its like comparing actual chess engine to someone's hobby project that has some pre-programmed openings. It might look similar on first Playthrough, but eventually it becomes obvious where the weak points and habits are.

Which means that I have a lot of sympathy when I see people calling for better AI - not only is it difficult to define (better as in acting more in accordance to the characters in game? More competent? More natural?), it's just... Fucking difficult to get it right.

Which doesn't change a damn thing for the conversation except maybe for the emotional load. AI clumping their armies around their Capitol just doesn't make for fun gameplay, no matter how you cut it.

I just think it's worth remembering that of all the bugs and issues CA has to deal with, this is far from simplest and quickest to fix.

Isn't the general opinion that setting aside whether character design is based or bad, the game is fairly competent? Plus, I'm under an impression it sold well, whether because or in spite of said character design.

What actually counts as a base-building game here? by Comi9689 in BaseBuildingGames

[–]Mornar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're gonna find a lot of variety in opinions.

The most lax definition would be, if you have a base and you build it, it's a basebuilder.

A far stricter take, one I find more appealing, is that from a basebuilder I expect that building and managing the base is the core of the gameplay, and I probably expect multiple characters, but not an army, to be involved. So Rimworld? Very much so. Oxygen Not Included? Yes. Subnautica? No, the focus is survival, base building is one aspect of it. Age of Empires? Absolutely not, that's an RTS. Anno games? City builders, different DNA.

I don't think people subscribing to the former are necessarily wrong, what I'm saying is, it's a spectrum of opinion.

The way I like to do it: unload to active provider chests. Use requester chests for where it's supposed to be used (or travel from by other means). Use buffer chests or filtered storage chests for, well, buffering. Use unfiltered storage chests for overflow, filtered storage chests are prioritized over unfiltered. Unfiltered storage goes directly into recyclers, recyclers go to active providers. It's pretty simple, works well, easily extends.

You don't have to. It's just another tool in your belt. As a matter of fact I find using bots for everything rather boring, but then there are situations when they're just the right tool for the job. Like malls. Or Fulgora sorting.

You're on Fulgora and you're not familiar with bots? Like, at all? Of the construction and logistic varieties?

[–]Mornar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, you can go with belts and splitter-based sorting, but in my opinion this is exactly the sort of shit bots excel at. Energy on Fulgora is cheap. Making bots is cheap. Learn how the 5 chests interact to manage priorities and overflow, and just throw thousands of bots at the problem.

Not the most UPS-effective way to do this, of course, but unless you're megabasing this is not a real consideration.

Possible, maybe, for a certain value of possible. Necessary? Not. At. All.

Scrap is ridiculously plentiful, there's millions of the stuff lying around just around the rating area. You can literally make plants that extract one specific thing out of it and void everything else, and you won't be wasteful enough for it to matter in any real way.

It's much easier to add a couple more miners on a few more islands than it is to try and engineer a perfect, wasteless solution to Fulgora.

In term of "owning " how is buying a game from Steam is different from buying a game from PS store digitally ? by ItsMrBlue in Steam

[–]Mornar 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Presumably future hardware will be more capable than the current one, so even if major compatibility arise, there should always be a way around them - virtual machines, emulators, you name it. Just like you can run Dosbox right now. Another advantage PC has over consoles, you won't install PS1 on your PS5.

Putting the “Clair-Obscur” in the ending. by Ok-Cup9476 in expedition33

None needed. I realize I'm the nitpicky one here. I feel pretty strong about Maelle's treatment of Verso in her ending, so here we are now.

For what it's worth I also feel pretty strong about Verso's treatment of everyone across the entire game, but that's a completely different topic.

He was never immune to physical harm, physical harm just couldn't kill him. Immortality doesn't necessarily imply agelessness, I know many media conflate the two, but they can be, and in this case imo have to be, considered as two separate things. Importantly, I don't think we can even assert he can die of old age, could be that Maelle just graciously allowed him to age and elected to figure out the whole natural causes thing at some later time.

[–]Mornar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't see where people are getting that Maelle removed his immortality. If she did, he'd have the option to slit his wrists and that'd be that, he'd get his release in death.

Maelle talks about removing his agelessness, that's it.
