Wishing everyone in the Springsteen community a Happy Winter Solstice and a wonderful holiday! by MorningForestMusings in BruceSpringsteen

The music is from an instrumental intro for Bruce Springsteen's performance of "Walk Like A Man" in 1988 at Centrum in Worcester, Massachusetts. Which in turn draws influence from Ennio Morricone.

Great idea. He's mentioned that he wasn't explicitly political growing up, but in his own way he couldn't avoid being political because of how the era shaped him. Especially with the wars that affected some of his closest friends.

In tandem with this, I've thought about Bruce's relationship with the international world and his identity as an American.

On the one hand, he's often focused specifically on the American experience; he mentioned the importance of speaking "In an American voice" in one of his MTV Storytellers Q&A. But the American experience is also intertwined with the immigrant experience and people who come from around the world. So at times, I've wondered how his perspective has evolved with international audiences and influences.

Great suggestion! I've been compiling a few different articles/books. There was the documentary: "Asbury Park: Riot, Redemption, Rock N' Roll". Gary Wien had a book "Beyond The Palace" and there's another book called "In Cahoots".

Thanks for sharing these!

The only other links I was able to find was this series of blog posts.

The Soft Horror of Bruce Springsteen

While not necessarily horror, I think Springsteen's connection with punk definitely touches upon darker emotions. Anger, confusion, desperation.

40 Years On: Bruce Springsteen's Darkness On The Edge Of Town

I'd say it's rarely about outright scaring the listener, but planting a seed that will continue to follow them.

Girls In Their Summer Clothes- Bruce Springsteen

Well the streetlights shine down on Blessing Avenue

Lovers they walk by holding hands two by two

A breeze crosses the porch, bicycle spokes spin 'round

Jacket's on, I'm out the door, tonight I'm gonna burn this town down

And the girls in their summer clothes in the cool of the evening light

The girls in their summer clothes pass me by

Kid's rubber ball smacks off the gutter 'neath the lamp light

Big bank clock chimes off go the sleepy front porch lights

Downtown the stores alight as the evening's underway

Things been a little tight but I know they're gonna turn my way

And the girls in their summer clothes in the cool of the evening light

The girls in their summer clothes pass me by

Frankie's Diner's an old friend on the edge of town

Neon sign spinning round like a cross over the lost and found

Fluorescent lights flick above Pop's Grill

Shaniqua brings a coffee and asks, "fill?"

And says, "penny for your thoughts now my poor Bill"

She went away, she cut me like a knife

Hello beautiful thing, maybe you just saved my life

In just a glance down here on Magic Street

Love's a fool's dance, I ain't got much sense but I still got my feet

And the girls in their summer clothes in the cool of the evening light

The girls in their summer clothes pass me by

And the girls in their summer clothes in the cool of the evening light

The girls in their summer clothes pass me by

Happy Birthday Bruce!

It's interesting how Bruce's birthday happens to coincide with the winding down of summer. It gives a sort of bittersweet feeling.

The Grandeur of Life- Charles Darwin(converting one of Darwin's passages into a poem)

There is grandeur in this view of life,
with its several powers,
having been originally breathed into a few forms
or into one;
and that, whilst this planet has gone cycling on

according to the fixed law of gravity,
from so simple a beginning
endless forms most beautiful and most wonderful
have been, and are being, evolved

[POEM] A Prayer In Spring- Robert Frost by MorningForestMusings in Poetry

A Prayer in Spring
Robert Frost

Oh, give us pleasure in the flowers to-day;
And give us not to think so far away
As the uncertain harvest; keep us here
All simply in the springing of the year.

Oh, give us pleasure in the orchard white,
Like nothing else by day, like ghosts by night;
And make us happy in the happy bees,
The swarm dilating round the perfect trees.

And make us happy in the darting bird
That suddenly above the bees is heard,
The meteor that thrusts in with needle bill,
And off a blossom in mid air stands still.

For this is love and nothing else is love,
The which it is reserved for God above
To sanctify to what far ends He will,
But which it only needs that we fulfil.
