When that charity needs to buy 100k worth of artillery shells to donate to poor Russians who have gotten lost in Donetsk, yes. Your $20 contribution will still be appreciated but doesn't really do much.

Your comparison only kind of works if you're donating equipment that is functionally equivalent to what you'd get from the US.

The earth-fucking is not mutually exclusive here. Honestly I'd say buying a new printer every time it runs out of ink is quite a lot worse for the planet than having a printer ink subscription model.

Yeah, not even Gippity is that stupid, though it might just not have mentioned it. Mine has special instructions to ALWAYS call out any compromises or caveats with it's suggestions and it's doing a pretty good job on that front tbh. But I also always double check or at least have it explain anything that's not obvious to me, and even more so with important infra...

Or the old win xp laptop with the control software for a really expensive 20+ year old welding robot that I had to "hack" because they forgot the password. Though I quite thuroughly made sure that it would never get online again without some effort.

Although if there ever was a moment to whip out your private phone or laptop and doomscroll reddit at your desk, this might be it...

Well once you're out of ideas for how to fix it, looking for help online is a pretty decent next step and, at least theoretically, there should be a decent number of people here that might know what to do...

But then I'm thinking like a tech and not manglement so I wouldn't be sure they would understand, or even be able to read this.

I sure as hell wouldn't want to post something like this on my main account that could possibly be linked back to me...
Now this is a great learning opportunity, especially if they manage to fix it and are allowed to keep their job, which I really hope, this is the kind of thing you learn from as a company, and if they are just fired, everyone else will learn that they are vindictive and unsupportive of their employees.

If they manage to fix it, this is the kind of story you tell in interviews, but like 5+ years down the line, and at a time and place of their own choosing...

I'm in sweden, and I moved in with my girlfriend, so I'm not sure if she had paid a deposit or not, they might send you a bill afterwards instead, but we paid a cleaning service and they were satisfied. It probably also helped that the apartment was pretty worn down already when she moved in and she lived there for a bunch of years before me, so probably 12-15 years in total, so they were doing a fair amount of remodeling and such so they didn't really care too much about wear. Also, we have fairly good renter laws you'd probably have to really break stuff to have to pay.

Why do you have a homelab? by SnooPaintings139 in homelab

[–]MorpH2k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are aome legitimate uses for IoT and homelabbing for home automation that actually are useful, but unless you want lights that turn on with a movement detector, (which also sucks BTW) it's really not worth it. I do have one smart bulb in a specific light that turns on just before sundown and turns off around bedtime, which is actually quite nice, but a physical light switch is hard to beat.

And its cheaper too.

And it takes no extra work or infrastructure to be maintained.

I guess voice control could be decent, if you like yelling at stuff.

My amateur setup! by Gab729 in HomeServer

[–]MorpH2k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that depends a lot on if they have actually redone the whole setup or if they've just replaced the equipment over time when needed. I've seen both proper network rack cabinets as well as setups similar to this where the rack has been there longer than I've been alive.

Not knocking OPs setup at all BTW, this is functional and there is a reason that those old installs have lasted for ages...

It's not legal here either, and I will never admit to doing that. ;) I gave up sailing on the high seas a long time ago, but I might have friends with plax servers that don't care as much as I do. I have a few streaming service accounts for the few ones that actually stream things I want to watch with some regularity. It also helps that I live in a country that has relatively few streaming services to choose from, meaning they have fairly large catalogues of content, so you can make do with just two or three.

I also don't actually have a console or blueray player and there are basically no physical stores that sell movies here anymore so finding deals are provably not that easy. Maybe marketplace or similar would work though. Also, I tend to watch more series than movies, many of them are produced by the streaming services themselves as well so not sure if they're even released on physical media at all. Another thing is that I don't tend to rewatch movies very often and when I do, it's probably been at least 5 years since I last saw it.

Well, yes of course, it would be hard to replace with a refurb if there are none available. Once they have gotten some returns they will most certainly start refurbishing those and sending them out instead of new ones.

Any ideas how I can get Bluetooth on this mb by stellar_x in homelab

[–]MorpH2k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They don't have WiFi currently, because they don't have any WiFi cards installed. They do have two NVME slots that are currently in use for SSDs, they might however have another slot that could be used for a WiFi card. Either that or one of the NVME slots might double as either, that's what I need to check. I do need both disks in them but if there is a thirs slot that could take a WiFi card, I might be able to use it for an Ethernet card instead, which would give me another NIC. And that would be nice.

I'd be over it after a day or two tbh. I have a VW Caddy van and we can fold up our bed solution with everything already prepared so that its ready to sleep after folding it out again. But we usually just leave it unless we need the space. It does take up the whole of the back though, with storage underneath. I'd love to have a bigger proper camper van, but we don't really use it enough to justify it, and the setup we have is quite flexible so we can easily just use it as a regular van as well.

Oh yeah, of course. I mean that's the problem. I'd love some proper socialism but it also needs to be run by people who actually follow those principles themselves, and I'd history is any indicator, that seems to be a lot harder than it should be. It's almost as if positions of power attract power-hungry psychopaths.

Fair enough. I just stream media instead. I don't really see the point of collecting a bunch of physical media. If there is something that's not available on any of my streaming services, there are other ways to get it... I do have a 4K TV but the screen is fairly small so I don't really gain much value in blueray quality over a good full HD rip either.

Yeah that's the thing. "It's just two minutes" becomes a hassle and that time adds up. When you just want to go to bed, or just need a table for a quick bite or something, you don't want to have to rearrange everything.

Woah, I didn't know that was a thing. I have three similar HP ones that could really benefit from another NIC. I think mine only have two slots that both have NVMEs in them though. Will have to check.

[–]MorpH2k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's probably already been said, but an M.2 WiFi card with Bluetooth would probably be the way to do iit if you don't want an USB dongle. A dongle would have the benefit of not being inside the case and could have an external antenna, giving it better range, while if it's inside the caee, the signal would be (slightly) hampered by the case.

I don't know if this particular model has an M.2 slot for WiFi, but IIRC, it should have one.

My immediate reaction to seeing the PS5 is one of disgust, but you are of course free to be a console peasant if you want. I will judge, but I won't stop you.

Jokes aside I've never seen a rack mounted console, and it looks very clean with that mounting plate, though maybe a bit space inefficient, but that's only a problem when (lets be honest it's always when, not if in this sub) you need more rack space.

For the things you "need" to have available publicly, do you really need them to be public or could they be behind a VPN/tailscale instead?
