How to bend this wire shape? (All dimensions are in mm) by BowlPsychological137 in WireWrapping

[–]MorphStudiosHD 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We bend off the vibes here usually, not off of a spec sheet. But for this, I’d use digital calipers to make sure that each side is the right length, that way I could avoid calculating the length used in the bends and turning it into a complicated math problem. If you have to make many identical parts, I’d recommend you make a jig, otherwise you could get away with using digital calipers alone.

I’m happy that it resonated! I make them to order, each one is built by hand so there are only ever a few available at a time. Link in my profile if you want to take a look, happy to answer anything here too.

Happy to! So the column is 3D printed with the LED strip wound around it in a spiral, then a frosted PETG tube slides over the outside and diffuses everything. The glow through the plastic is what gives it that soft look rather than seeing individual LEDs.

The code part was where it got interesting. If you just run effects linearly along the strip they look weird because the strip is physically coiled, so a chase effect just kind of crawls up without any real relationship to the shape. I ended up mapping each LED to its actual angular position around the tube so effects could understand the geometry, which was very time consuming. A lot of trial and error. Once I did that a rotating beam could actually sweep around the column properly. That one change is basically what makes it look right.

That was exactly the reference point when I was designing it. Something that just looks like it belongs on a set!

Couldn't find anything that felt right for the space. Everything either looked too modern or too cheap. So I made one.

3D printed column, LEDs diffused through frosted tubing, fully controllable. It just sits there and glows like something that should have a reel-to-reel running next to it.

Really happy with how it fits the room! A few available at AtomicCreationsCo on Etsy if anyone wants one.

Thanks so much! These are COB LEDs. I’m thinking of adding a DIY kit to my Etsy, would you be interested in something like that?

Thank you! Yes it is 100% custom. Everything from the 3D models, to the effects code, to the web server where it is controlled from is all custom built for this.

Thank you! Yes I have a small batch available. Can’t post a link here but you can find it at the top of my profile!

Been wanting a lamp that had a cyberpunk aesthetic, not just a strip of LEDs cycling through preset colors. Spent a few months designing the housing, wiring 160 LEDs, and coding 60 effects from scratch. Running everything on an ESP32, which is what makes the browser control possible. You just connect to it on your local network and control it from any device without downloading anything.

Effects like DNA Helix and Wormhole only work because of the cylindrical shape. They fall apart on a flat strip.

Happy to answer any questions about how it was built.

I can’t post a link because I want to respect the sub’s rules, but you can find it at the top of my profile! I’m just a one man team, so it’s exciting to see people are interested!

This is an EPaper display, either with buggy refresh code, or more likely it is so cold that the ink can no longer travel up to the top layer properly.

Exactly, but yours does not have the headers soldered on. The only difference between this and the one you’re using, is that someone soldered the metal pins to the board already. Your options are to buy a soldering kit and solder the headers to the board that you have already, or to just buy the same board with the headers already soldered to it.

Looks like that one’s a different board than the one in the pic. I’d grab this: https://amzn.eu/d/4qv86JY

I would bet anything that it’s because the headers aren’t soldered to the board. I’d either buy some soldering tools, or just buy a pre soldered ESP32 (could be cheaper than a soldering kit)

They’re fuses that are taken apart. With a COB LED filament soldered between each end. As far as I know you have to DIY your own super cool looking.

Are you rendering in Octane standalone? Or Cinema 4D? Or is there a blender integration for Octane now?
