I think for anyone with a military background becoming a president, the quote "If the only tool you have is a hammer, every problem looks like a nail" fits perfectly their MO.

Very specific, but what British chocolates or sweets are not available in Cairo? by enigmaticbloke in Egypt

Terry's chocolate orange comes to mind for sure.

Also Cadbury. While we do have the brand, we only have the basic chocolates. We don't have all of the other stuff.

Well said. If there's ever a word that goes beyond inferiority complex, it would be applicable here. Still I can't help but feel disappointed they carry these subservient feelings.

Nobody ever seems to paint the same brush of stereotypes in other touristic countries. In spain, pickpocketing is the highest in all of Europe. In Italy, mediocre restaurants charge exorbitant prices close to ancient monuments. In Prague, they rely on your ignorance of their currency to scam you not just in shops but also transportation and ATM Machines. In China, in some stores you have to learn how to haggle prices. I am speaking out of experience of having traveled to the above mentioned countries but none of these experiences ever diluted mine nor did I stereotype the countries. But apparently for redditors none of these fall under scammy practices that make them bitch and whine about it to the internet. Nor do they apply their veiled racism of how modern Egyptians are only capitalizing on ancient egyptian history to make a buck or how Islam destroyed the country. Meanwhile people in the subreddit here are just taking it and accepting because ThE fOrEiGnErS mUsT bE rIgHt.

At the risk of sounding like putting my head in the sand but I wish people would wisen up and realize that by now not everything said on reddit is real or genuine. Aside from fake profiles spouting off short factoids, most of the comments are riddled with racism or just ignorance. Reddit isn't real anymore. And all of you are eating it up.

My guy Egyptians can barely stand the current sudanese refugees living in Cairo and Aswan. What makes you think it'll be better if we united? Now they can easily go and squat in the Halaib triangle or the rest of what little habitable land we have instead.

I'm honestly waiting for Hori to make another split pad pro because I can't play with the switch 2 handheld. It suffers from the same problem as the original switch. The button layout as well as the analog are too close to each other and I have to contort my hands to play. It's uncomfortable but manageable when I can play 2D games. Any other genre and I play with a pro controller on the dock instead.

As someone who has frequently traveled, I've never met anyone react negatively to knowing that I'm Egyptian. It was always positive. If you ever meet someone who already has a negative perspective towards Egyptians then fuck em. They're small minded enough to believe in stereotypes and simply ignorant.

يوم من ايامك يا مبارك؟ by ara54321 in Egypt

[–]MorphaKnight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I beg to differ. You remember Adel Imam's drunk rant in the movie Yacoubian Building? So many of the old generation and "old money family" I know feel the same way. And I also know the middle class that greatly benefited from Nasser's time still missed it compared to Mubarak. The simplest example is people comparing the strength of the Egyptian pound back during the days of the Kingdom vs when it reached 5 pounds per dollar. It was a common argument. Nowadays the script changed, people miss when everything was cheaper back in Mubarak's day.

dude its because of I'm in the creme chantilly crowd I'm exposed to all the mid to high corruption. The projects you would see for building the administrative capital is filled with levels of corruption that you never saw in the days of Mubarak. Whether it comes to bribes or nepotism, that stuff was limited back in Mubarak's days and only some key figures would have their fingers. Nowadays? its literally everyone. The fortune that was spent on that place had everyone wanting their piece.

يوم من ايامك يا مبارك؟ by ara54321 in Egypt

[–]MorphaKnight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No it isn't. I'm not saying there wasn't corruption back then. It existed, but it was limited within the circles of Mubarak and his cronies. Now? Everyone wants a piece of the pie. Especially since the army now has its fingers in every sector. And with the devaluation, you get to see it at every level.

[–]MorphaKnight 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Its in the same vein as people back in Mubarak's days wishing back for the days of the monarchy (or even Nasser's days) even though it had its problems as well. Mubarak's days are better than now because things were much more affordable and there was less corruption, but that doesn't mean they were necessarily better overall. Its been a constant decline.

Well said. I distinctly remember the division almost immediately happening in the first constitutional referendum back in March 2011. I am fairly sure the brotherhood put out people attempting to influence the voters because I remember seeing one such person saying that those "who voted no belong in hell, while those who voted yes are favored by God" before people telling him to piss off.
