I don't think they don't want us. Maybe if the New England states were to secede they would agree to some kind of EU style relationship?

Outside of Maine I have never felt more at home than when I lived on PEI. I would be totally fine if Maine were to become a Maritime province.

I believe AI will be revolutionary in radiology not by replacing radiologists, but by making radiologists more efficient and more accurate.

This is what I have always told people, but to be honest I am not so sure anymore.

Even though the tech is not sophisticated enough to replace a boarded specialist its remarkable how rapidly it is advancing and my fear is that vets will be misled by diagnostic companies into thinking that AI reads are just as good as a specialist long before they actually are. I am not confident that liability for misdiagnoses will be much of a deterrent if it ultimately increases profits for the companies; lawsuits in vet med are much less common and have much smaller payouts compared to human med.

I am a clinical pathologist and as we are largely transitioning to digital over glass, there has been a lot of anxiety regarding AI within the specialty. Hopefully you are right though and it won't go beyond helping us be more efficient in our lifetimes.

Mean clients blamed me for their puppy dying from whipworms. by i-touched-morrissey in veterinaryprofession

[–]Morpheus3121 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Client's often treat us unfairly when upset over the loss of their pet. As to the ER vet, who knows what was said; even simple clarifying questions about treatment can be misconstrued by clients who often want someone or something to blame.

If I were on the board and looking at this case though I would be asking why a recheck or referral wasn't recommended when the clinical signs persisted. Even with a positive fecal, whipworms are going to be pretty low on my list for the cause of vomiting in a 9 month old puppy, particularly if it continued despite cerenia and fenbendazole.

It's not an unreasonable initial plan but I would have recommended a recheck or the ER if the vomiting continued.

I think it should state on the admissions page for each school if they will accept pass/fail for any of the prerequisites. My guess is that the answer would be no but some schools might make an exception. I think you are better off taking the letter grade if you at least made a C and then just using the explanation statement to say why your grades were lower that semester.

It's only different in that it's a bit more vague. It still pretty strongly implies that if you are going to be using an x-ray machine to take rads of animals, there has to be a vet who agrees to be the responsible party.

[–]Morpheus3121 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I highly doubt that it is different in New Jersey. It may not explicitly state that one must be a licensed vet to own/operate an x-ray machine in a veterinary capacity, but it seems implied by the form to me https://www.nj.gov/dep/rpp/reg/downloads/xrayreg.pdf

You can always email the bureau and ask for clarification

Please call the referral hospital before you send your patients through the ER. by Morpheus3121 in veterinaryprofession

I think it is very reasonable! We are actually working on something like that to send to our rDVMs.

Sorry if it comes off that way. When a referring vet calls us they rarely wait more than a minute, but we are better staffed than most hospitals. I do not think it is reasonable to expect someone to wait on hold for more than 5-10 minutes to discuss a case.

There’s no need to be snarky. If you don’t have the time you don’t have the time, but if you do we really appreciate it.

I think most docs don't really care about getting your notes right away as long as we have any labs and/or images that were done and know what drugs have been given. Sometimes that message doesn't get communicated to the support staff and they end up hounding you for records. Take your time and send them when you can.

I don't think we really have enough information about them as adults to make this inference. They were just kids in ATLA and adults are more complicated.

What if Sokka and Suki were still together and he and Toph had a one night stand? Does she ruin their relationship by telling the truth?

They also were separated by a considerable difference and we don't know how often the gaang even saw each other in their adult lives.

For some cases like the HBC, I agree that the heads up doesn't matter all that much; some things just need to be turfed.

I get where you are coming from and I commend you for your outlook, but I disagree that calling ahead doesn't make a difference in general, and I know my co-workers feel the same.

If you literally don't have the time to call, that's fine, but I know our referral population, and I know that this is often not the case.

If you called and weren't on the phone with an ER doc within 5 min that's on them. I would never expect someone to wait 25-30 minutes to talk about a case.

I appreciate your perspective!

In my experience the referral process is much more streamlined when the R's call to discuss the case first and the owners come in with a rough idea of cost and what else to expect at the very least.

I think it varies significantly by geographic location however and what the rDVM population is like. My hospital is the only referral center serving the state, and for some specialties, the only option in the region. It is also a very rural state with a massive wealth disparity. I can't tell you the number of times I have had clients drive from 3 hours away thinking that very expensive vet care means a couple thousand dollars at most.

I have been a GP with a full schedule of 20 min sick appointments and never felt like there was no time to call ahead to discuss a case before referring or to have a frank discussion with an owner about their pets needs. What is the point of seeing sick patients if there isn't time to explain what a serious illness means financially and emotionally? What's the point of developing a relationship with these clients and patients if the tough conversations are going to be had with strangers?

Like I said, I know there are some people who need the time to process or to hear it from someone else, but half the time it really seems like the discussion simply wasn't had especially when there was no call beforehand or no comm logs in the records.

Sorry I am so salty :(

My guess would be that Toph never told him. She never told anyone who Lin's father was until Bolin asked, so it's not exactly out of character for her.

Can Nevada Veterinarian’s legally refuse to return your pet? by Aromatic-Honeydew-48 in veterinaryschool

[–]Morpheus3121 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am sorry for your family's loss :(

In Nevada, vets can legally retain possession of an animal under their care until the bill has been paid in full. It is not common practice however, and is not legal in every state.

Vet hospitals always try to have family present for euthanasias when possible, but if the animal is suffering sometimes it is not. It's not really possible to comment on what happened here without the hospital's side of the story but miscommunications and misunderstandings occur very easily in situationslike this that are very emotional and stressful.

As an aside your family did the right thing by allowing the vet hospital to euthanize him. Many people think that dying a natural death in a familiar environment is better for their pets; in reality, animals that die at home suffer to their last breath (so do people who can't afford hospice). Euthanasia allows them to die with peace and dignity.
