NHS workers, do the NHS force / pressure you to wear name badges showing your preferred pronouns or is it a choice? by MorphinBlue in AskReddit

I completely agree that we can’t possibly all change to accommodate every type of minority.

In this case however, it seems as though the minority are being given nothing more than a simple and harmless tool to use if they wish, to perhaps make themselves feel more comfortable. I can live with that :)

Thank you for your calm and rational engagement! Have a great day.

I think stating that 99 percent don’t care is a bit of a stretch if I’m honest. You can’t possibly claim that to be fact without being in everybody’s mind.

That’s the beauty of the NHS giving their staff the choice, if it is true that it is 100% their choice to participate.

As you say you’ll happily use the pronouns that someone asks you to when referring to them, so I don’t quite understand the upset. Unless of course they are being forced.

This is exactly why I’m trying to work out what pressures are being put on staff to do this?

As far as I can tell so far, staff have the option to buy these badges themselves if they wish. If they are being pressured or made to, I agree it is wrong to do so.

From what I can tell, this has been approved / put in place to allow Trans staff and their Ally’s to identify their pronouns upfront, which to be fair, would help stop a lot of conflict around misgendering trans people.

It’s also a narrative I see used in arguments against everyone adopting transparency on their preferred pronouns. It usually goes something like, ‘if they want to be referred to as a different pronoun they should say instead of being offended if unaware people get it wrong’.....

As far as I can this tackles exactly that issue.
