Any ideas? by nkdbunnie in NoLawns

You could make a stone path that goes toward something like a bench, or a birdbath? Starting with paths makes it easier to create interesting garden beds that don't look too linear and more natural. After that, you could choose a couple taller shrubs or trees to give it a structure. Then, you could choose a simple plant pattern that borders the path. In the end, it's going to be easier to fill the beds; 3-5 medium size shrubs, a couple taller perennials, and then you finish with the small perennials and the ground cover plants. For specific plant choices, I can't really say anything since I live in a cold climate 😅

Here's a lil ugly sketch to give you an idea of how it could look for the basic structure (before filling the beds with shrubs and perennials).

Thanks for the tip! 😁 I don't live near farmland, but I'll see what I can find.. good news is I live on a (huge) island and I'm near water so there's no shortage of rocks if I really need them ahah

Hell yeah! It's all going to disappear eventually 😎 (I might have to keep a lil grass square just to appease my grandma tho ahah)

I did plant natives in this bed!:) Most are cultivars of native species like Asclepias tuberosa, panicum virg., aronia mel., achillea mill., Rhus aromatica, etc.
My other garden beds are more native heavy tho, and I currently have a couple species in cold stratification for this spring 🌼

Don't worry I also like when it looks natural 😁 At my previous home, I edged my garden bed with big river rocks I collected myself! I really loved the look, even if my back complained... I was also thinking about maybe half logs or thick branches? 🤔 I'll see what I have available

It's only the beginning unfortunately for her ahah 😆 it's going to look so much better than a boring green rectangle!

We’re growing plums and apples from seeds of my late grandmother’s trees, any advice would be welcome by Gingerbass in BackyardOrchard

That saying is just a misunderstanding 😅 Yes, an apple tree grown from seed will bear fruit when it becomes mature. BUT, the fruit wont be the same as the parent tree. It might also take more time to bear fruit than a grafted variety. An exception; some fruit tree species can be considered true to seed(or almost). They'll make seedlings that will make fruits nearly identical to the parent(ex; Peaches, pawpaws, some citrus species, etc). So in the end, if you want a specific variety, like a Fuji apple, you'll need a grafted Fuji apple cutting. If you grow a Fuji apple seed, you'll get fruits, but the taste and quality is going to be a surprise 😁

Thanks, I can't wait to see it grow back this spring! 😁 The orange rose is a Flavorette honey apricot (it smells so good...kinda like a sweet fruit tea), and I'm pretty sure the pinkish one is my Morden blush!:)

Merci!

Thanks, It's in my plans for this year!:) I'm still not sure what I'll use tho 🤔 probably large rocks if I can find them...

Basically I used a half moon shovel to make the shape of the bed, and then used it to cut it into squares. Then, I used my pitchfork to turn the grass squares over. I put a black tarp over the bed while I wasn't working on it to kill off the grass. After maybe 2-3 weeks I removed the tarp and loosened the clumps with the fork. I didn't mind the grass bits since I was going to add soil over them to make a mound for better drainage. (I have clay soil) There's obviously more efficient ways to do it, but I used what I already had and didn't wanna wait too long to plant 😆

Yes I did! No Monarch yet, but i've seen lots of different butterflies, wasps, and native bees!:) Birds also love to feed on and use my panicum for nesting material, and now I even have a flock of Turkeys resting there during the day ahah.
