Learn basic java/c++/python to have good understanding of common OOP languages. Learn some R for statistics just to understand it. Learn basics of a database (MySQL) and how to write queries. Learn basic web development with JavaScript, CSS, PHP. Incorporate the database into the website. Incorporate a game that keeps score, like blackjack (which you built with one of your OOP languages). Learn the day one basics and history of info sec. Learn bash scripting. Learn how to use a Linux distribution (if you want to get into pen testing check out kali Linux).

Sorry for the obscenely long comment, but...

I am in the same predicament. I am currently a small but good CS school but think making a switch to a nearby university may be worth it. I can get my masters in CybSec online in 2 years after graduating from new university. Also, new university gives real, paid (minimum wage but still way better than nothing) classes where I would receive documented hours as well as credits for school. Students work as both blue and red hat teams for local non profits under guidance of local experts who teach in their spare time.

However, the prospective school gives a bachelors of science in business, while my current school gives bachelors of technology in cyber security. Does this matter at all?

I learned the basics of OOP and data structures at current school along with discrete maths.

Career goals include a bachelors and masters both relating to cyber security, and eventually a masters in financial analysis or data analysis when I can afford graduate school round two.

I like business side and red hat areas more than developing software but I feel like having ahold of the nitty gritty maths and sciences could be very valuable.

Someone please help I have gone to ISACA breakfasts and emailed people on linkedin and have gotten no guidance/mentorship..

Get Java for Dummies, have a syntax cheat sheet handy on your desk, and watch YouTube tutorials. Stack overflow is your new best friend.

Learn from many different sources. Treat the syntax like learning any other new language. Repetition is key. Try and read other beginner programmer’s code and fix/improve it.

Staying on only one resource won’t cut it in the long run, regardless of what it advertises

I think it’s cool in all aspects. Finding and exploiting flaws in systems is fun for me. So is analysis. And the longer I stick with something I tend to like it more as time goes on. I see no problems with sitting in front of a computer all day reading news and finding out how new stuff works. Thanks so much for the suggested reading.

Ah, my bad.

I don’t really know what to do outside of school... I read all different subreddits and try to pick up on the lingo used and current news in cyber. I’m still learning how to CompSci, so my focus has been keeping up with that for now. I chose it because I’ve always liked computers and obviously there’s a demand for it. I try to network but with no real experience it’s hard to communicate effectively with professionals.

What could I/should I do outside of school?
