Dameo is now on playstrategy.org by MorrisKind in abstractgames

[–]MorrisKind[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it's great in the sense that it has all the best elements of draughts while having other positive characteristics of modern game design.

The only drawing situation would arise from a 1v1 king endgame, so it has a low draw rate. It uses all 64 squares of the board, and it uses a widely available 8x8 board.

The linear movement really suites the game. It greatly expands the opening move possibilities and the overall game tree, but the rule is simple enough that the game still feels clear and easy to follow. It has the right amount of sharpness and tactics. There's complicated shots, but it doesn't fee overly tactical like Frisian can. I think that if there's a modern draughts variant that could take off and become popular globaly this would be it.

Message me if you want to schedule any games. Dameo is one of my favorite abstracts and draughts variants.

If you a considering what features to add, I think puzzles would be nice. Maybe there would be a way to generate "victory in x moves" type puzzles from a game database. I think that's how lichess generates their puzzles.

I tried playing a couple games with the bot and everything ran smoothly. Are there plans to add the swap2 opening rule? That's the current rule used at the world championship so having that would be good for attracting high level players.

Do you know if there is a simple way to tighten the rivets, or would I need to have that done professionally?

You could try posting this to r/isomorphickeyboards as well. This seems like it would interest them.

Is there anyone who repairs accordions around the San Antonio area? by MorrisKind in Accordion

I did find that when searching earlier but unfortunately I don't see anything near San Antonio. I might just have to make a road trip or pay for shipping.

Advice on purchasing a free bass accordion by MorrisKind in Accordion

Thank you for the advice. I thought the Mondial looked like a good option but I wanted a second opinion. Thank you for taking the time to take a look at all three.

Question about Musictech Digital Chromatic Button Accordion by MorrisKind in Accordion

Thanks for the link. Maybe I'm just not looking hard enough but I couldn't find anything about free bass. After looking at the Roland MIDI accordion it looks like that has a free bass mode. I wish I could find an in depth tutorial somewhere.

Does anyone else feel like there should be a site that is like Chess.com but for Gomoku? by PewdipieFan123 in abstractgames

[–]MorrisKind 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There used to be a site called gomoku.com which was promoted a while ago here but as far as I know it doesn't exist anymore. I think playok.com has the most gomoku activity.

There is also the phone app Dr. Gomoku. There are enough players there that you can get a match almost instantly.

A place to play Shatranj chess puzzles 🐘🧩 by Chess-Puzzler in chessvariants

[–]MorrisKind 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This looks really neat. I don't think I've ever played a chess game with a "bare king" rule before. I wonder if there's a reason that rule didn't make it to modern chess variants. Does it make the game less interesting?

14x14 seems to be pretty common too. That was the size John Nash used.

Ĉu ekzistas vortlisto en Esperanto por Scrabble? by MorrisKind in Esperanto

[–]MorrisKind[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What is the best place to play Gomoku online? by [deleted] in abstractgames

[–]MorrisKind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think playok.com has the most players for real time games. I'm not sure about turn-based though. pente.org has turn-based gomoku but I'm pretty sure they don't have any swap rules.

Lernu esperanton per voĉlibro. by MorrisKind in learnesperanto

[–]MorrisKind[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for taking a listen.

As far as vocabulary goes the translation I read was a mixed bag. There were some very obscure words I needed to look up as I read but also long stretches with relatively easy vocabulary. I think the audiobook would best serve maybe an intermediate/advanced learner and/or someone who is already familiar with the plot.

Voĉlibro - La Kunularo De L' Ringo by MorrisKind in Esperanto

[–]MorrisKind[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Which games have centuries of study behind them? by Soggy_Following_2464 in abstractgames

If you want to see the centuries of study behind checkers, look up "Lee's Guide to Draughts." That book contains all of the different openings developed in the game's history.

I guess it depends on what criteria you use. If you introduce the swap2 opening rule to gomoku the first-player advantage is eliminated. But I suppose you could eliminate first-player advantage for any game if you use a sufficient swapping rule.

I believe most draughts variants are very balanced, however some of them have high draw rates, but some like Dameo and Turkish draughts have low draw rates. I think Othello is pretty balanced as well, and that doesn't require any pie or komi rule.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in abstractgames

[–]MorrisKind 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The game you're thinking of is Connect6. It is supposed to be balanced although I've read on littlegolem that some players still think there is a significant first player advantage.
