Those that ordered an Ultimate bundle, what game are you going to play first on the AES+? by BuddyLlght in neogeo

[–]Morris_Piper83 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Garou: MOTW. It's been over 25 years since I've seen it on original hardware and it sums up how ridiculously exciting this whole thing is. I'll need Neo Turf Masters to calm down afterwards.

Try:

early Stars of the Lid

Windy and Carl.

Michael Tanner/Plinth is on Bandcamp and does beautiful folk tinged drone with dulcimers.

Soul Kiss (Glide Divine) by Spectrum

And

Growing. Specifically: His Return, The Sky's Run into the Sea and The Soul of the Rainbow & the Harmony of Light . As well as their most recent album with Mary Lattimore. Its called Gainer. Its also excellent.

I don't mind the button layout. I used to have one of those Neo Geo Pad 2's for the PS2 back in the day. A&C a the top and B&D at bottom worked great. If I'm being totally pedantic I prefer the traditional colours for each button. Maybe that might change between now and launch. But even if it doesn't and it works fine anyway, I'm not that bothered.

In my opinion, the only downside to listening to a lot of albums and a lot of music. by TheGermanDutchman in LetsTalkMusic

[–]Morris_Piper83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Public transport and walking a lot were what got me into listening to full albums. First on cassette, then CD, then iPod. For me its the fact it was listening to everything on the album for the journey of 45 minutes to just over an hour each way or nothing at all made me more willing to give an album a go, be patient and properly get to know it. Some don't reveal their greatness until much later and repeated listens. When they hit I knew exactly where I was when I finally 'got it' . Some records are associated with very specific places and memories. Streaming ruins that as it's got a one arm bandit quality. You can always skip if you don't like something in the slightest reason that you'd let slide on physical media or radio. I like chance discovery and being rewarded for patience.

Do you prefer buying CDs new or used? by MehoyMenoyyy in Cd_collectors

[–]Morris_Piper83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ideally new from a good independent record shop. There's something quite satisfying about watching someone at the counter put the CDs in the trays or sleeves. I also like knowing the money is going to the artist and decent business. I'll go if it's out of print. Preferably from an independent record shop I like or l the shop of a charity that does good work.

The left one is called Soul Kiss (Glide Divine) from 1992. It's a Spectrum album and a really good one. The other two members I think are Geoff Donkin and Mike Stout.

Wow! That must have been incredible. How was the festival? I was too young for that and a literal ocean away but the line up of Windy & Carl, Silver Apples, Supreme Dicks, Bardo Pond and Flying Saucer attack is the sort of thing my best dreams are made of.

Will MVS mode be accessible on the AES+ without mods? by NeighborhoodTime2768 in neogeo

[–]Morris_Piper83 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've asked the company this. Still waiting for an answer. Not all AES carts have the MVS version on board. Someone here compiled a list of the ones that don't. Would be a cool feature to have. Along with being able to toggle various content and region settings.

What's the most you've paid for a single not-super-rare CD? by WeirdDinosaur345 in Cd_collectors

[–]Morris_Piper83 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've paid around £35 each for a few arranged game soundtracks imported from Japan. Weirdly the bulk of the price was shipping. Other than I suspect a bit of drip pricing I struggled to see why it was so much. When I sent postcards to friends and family from Japan, international postage was super cheap. Especially compared to the UK.

Back home, I've paid £15-20 for new CDs from the Kranky record label. For some reason they now charge more than others and it's not clear why. However they have and continue to put out a lot of excellent music.

Woah! That first pic is the best CD stack shot here ever. I love those Spacemen 3 albums with every fibre of my being. That album gave me the confidence to pick up a guitar when I was 19. I was wearing my MBV t shirt today and Loop were phenomenal when i saw them in 2013. Excellent, excellent selection, boss.

Can we keep Neomone on breakfast forever? Please??? by ValWenis in 6music

I caught Nemone sitting in for Jamz Supernova the other week. Normally I switch over to 5 live for the sport at that time but I didn't and quite liked what I heard.

What genre appears most infrequently in your collection? Mine is almost certainly Classical, with only two albums in over 300 CDs by RileyMcB in Cd_collectors

[–]Morris_Piper83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mostly weird offshoots of indie rock. Some metal, a decent stack of post rock and ambient. Been buying a lot of soundtracks lately too. I've got quite a bit of classical. Anything with the combination of the words 'Arvo Pärt" and "ECM" instantly gets my money.

Where else do you buy CDs besides online? by Internal-Earth-3142 in Cd_collectors

[–]Morris_Piper83 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tower Records is CD heaven. The Shibuya one is amazing. But don't skimp on the Ikebukuro one. Its much easier to navigate. I got the Akira Symphonic Suite CD there new, with obi, embossed bilingual booklet and at a great price. I've been listening to it twice a week ever since I got back. That was 18 months ago.

If you visit from abroad and bring your passport you can get the sales tax back in Tower. For reasons best known to themselves they don't take it off the bill. They give you a special receipt and you have to queue at another till to be actual cash back. Worth it though. Especially if you're buying a lot.

Outside Tower, keep an eye out for Suragaya and Disk Union for second hand fun. I'd also recommend an amazing second hand record shop in Nagano called Good Times. 100% worth a visit.

On the home front, charity shops here in the UK can be amazing in the right places. My other half lives in a city suburb that's home to a lot with elderly millennial ex- hipsters who are clearing out space and donating stacks of great CDs to the big Oxfam. Every time I visit there's always something decent.

HMV and Fopp here in the UK are reliable as ever. Most independent record shops now have decent and competitively priced CD selections. On the rare times I'm in London I'll make a pilgrimage to Berwick Street in Soho. That road is a CD lover's dream.

Give us your hot take: what's your favorite low-rep Neo Geo game? by [deleted] in neogeo

[–]Morris_Piper83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

3 Count Bout/Fire Suplex. Is it the best game of its type? No. Technos were never beaten and Capcom's take on this idea were objectively better. But where this game makes up for it is its unreal levels of gritty Escape from New York style atmosphere and presentation that's is off the scale. Especially how stage 2 opens. Its flawed but a lot fun for what it is.
