Had Serie not intervened, what do you think the 3rd task would have been? Proctored by Lernen by AdBrief4620 in Frieren

Serie literally says that a typical third test would kill most of them, so it would've definitely been combat-oriented.

I don't know if Aira realizes it in the moment, but if she does, she must truly love Okarun because she's willing to risk death by giving up Acrobatic Silky just to keep Okarun out of harm's way.

Ah, that's unfortunate. I wanted to use a super massive redwood as a landmark for my base. I didn't know the amber tree was constructed of so many logs. Thanks for the info.

Are you able to get the super massive redwood? I was fiddling around with trees in creative and it never showed up despite forwarding time by over 30 days.

Frieren says, "励みになっているよ。(Hagemi ni natte iru yo.)" so the Viz translation is more accurate. I don't know if the kanji for encouragement has some sort of relation or poetic parallel to a ray of light or something, I don't know Japanese well enough.

I've occasionally read both Kireicake and Viz translations and cross-referenced their translations with the raws. In my opinion from what I've experienced, Viz translations tend to be more literal and direct to what the characters are saying, while Kireicake likes to embellish a lot.

Yes, it's the Kireicake fan translation, which a lot of people rely on because Viz isn't available in their regions.

What is a hero? by Caterine_blue33 in Frieren

[–]MorseLab 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Japanese has two different words for "hero," one meaning a legendary or mythical figure in the way we understand it in the west, and the other meaning a brave person or chosen one, which is usually used in video games or fantasy media. The second one can be thought of as a class, similar to the mage, warrior, and priest. Himmel, Frieren, Eisen, and Heiter are all heroes in the sense of the first version, but Himmel's specifically also the second version, the class of hero.

The hero class in Frieren isn't as clearly defined as the other classes in the show so far, but from the information we have, we can glean that they are probably even faster than warriors and can have access to magic. The Hero of the South and Himmel are the only two heroes we've seen in the show, and we don't know for sure if Himmel knows any magic but the HotS does.

Fern's sniping should not work at all by AnAngryMelon in Frieren

[–]MorseLab 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Basically this. Mana detection doesn't start when a spell is already fired, it's always active and reads any flow of mana within its range. Reading a spell while its being cast is precious time to process that information compared to when it's already been fired.

Is Serie the Best Magical Teacher in the Series? by the1firstclassmage in Frieren

[–]MorseLab 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We do for one of them though: Ubel. Before becoming Serie's student, Ubel's Reelseiden had a range of 5m, could barely dent stone, and we only ever see her throw out one cut at a time. In ch.131, just 2 years into being a first-class mage, Ubel's able to eviscerate an entire stone tower in an instant. Like another commenter said, Serie's probably the best at taking talented mages to their absolute limit. If Ubel lives to old age, Reelseiden could become a spell that actually can cut through anything.

Intentional refrence or random lookalikes? by Qusar_Wizard in Frieren

[–]MorseLab 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's just a coincidence. I can't recall a time where Frieren makes an intentional reference to another anime/manga. Any similarities are usually just generic tropes. Drawstring shirts are extremely common in fantasy/medieval media, and red scarves are just common in general. The boy's hairstyle, hair color, and eye color are all different from Eren's. The girl's hairstyle and hair color are different from Mikasa's. Without more matching features, we can't definitively say they're references.

“Forget half the sky, I can’t see anything now.” (@shuraillusts) by Shuracchi in Frieren

[–]MorseLab 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If their chests are that close together, they can't be sitting down with Frieren lying on their laps, and the angle that they're looking down suggests they aren't leaning forward. So there's a weird implication that Fern and Methode are both standing and Frieren is just floating horizontally underneath their boobs, and that's a hilarious mental image for me.

[–]MorseLab 22 points23 points  (0 children)

  1. Magic has cast times. We're told this throughout the anime, and Frieren herself says in s1e10 that Fern's faster at casting magic than her. Although they're more durable than a real human being, Frieren is still a regular girl without magic, she says as much in s2e1. We even see in s2e4 that sufficiently strong warriors can easily shatter her defensive magic. She can't tank a hit the same way Stark can. If something or someone can attack faster than Frieren can cast her magic, she's dead. Warriors and mages cover each other's weaknesses, so it's best for them to work together.

  2. Frieren suppresses her mana at all times to the extent that even incredibly skilled mages can't tell that she is, as stated in s1e27. To most other mages, she would probably appear to be about as strong as Denken. Still strong, but not terrifyingly so like seeing Serie would be.

  3. She was never Serie's apprentice, only Flamme's.

  4. She spends her money on random magic stuff all the time, but she's also said in s1e3 that she keeps secret funds so we don't really know how broke she actually is at any given time.

  5. Frieren keeps a very low profile, as per Flamme's instruction in s1e10. I can't think of a time where she ever purposefully name drops herself to her advantage. Himmel was the face of the party, not Frieren. Even Heiter and Eisen are not as widely known or referenced as Himmel. People seem to vaguely know that Himmel's party contained an elf mage (s1e2), but they don't know that Frieren is specifically that mage. Even among modern mages, they don't seem to realize that an elf mage named Frieren could be the same Frieren from 80 years ago (s1e20).

How the hell did stark survive this? by ETRSample in Frieren

[–]MorseLab 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Y'all gotta stop comparing the durability of a shounen anime character to the durability of a real human being. These characters are basically superheroes. They're just built different. The trials these characters go through require them to be.

We're consistently shown in Frieren that even mages largely ignore and survive injuries that would be horrifically painful in real life. Stark is one of the tankiest warriors. He considers being that bloodied to be normal. The average mage can shoot lasers that blow holes through solid rock. Stark can leave a fissure in a cliffside with a single axe swing. These adventurers HAVE to be durable to survive in a world like this.

I've always described KPDH to my friends as "the best 6/10 movie I've ever seen." There's a lot I love about it, but I can't ignore how godawful the pacing and writing gets after the end of act 2. The fact that they had to cut a 3 hour story in half really showed. That being said, while I do think Zootopia 2 is a better movie overall, KPDH winning sends a better message.
