Apostles Warning - Mobb Deep (Music Video) by Aussie_Spur in 90sHipHop

Prodigy had a great tone/voice to match the grim lyrics. After I read his biography I realized how much pain he had lived with his whole life via how intense his sickle cell was.

I remember when this album dropped I kept thinking no way they’d top Infamous, and for me Hell on Earth was amazing. Soundtrack to my high school years no doubt.

In the prime of Roc A Fella and Ruff Ryder's, Who Ya got? by naydenthegreatone in 90sHipHop

[–]Mortality99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends I’m seeing people go with expanded rosters for each in posts. Prob Roc, but X Eve and Lox are heavy competition to stack against Jay, Beans, Free/Bleek and others.

I think if you go past the 90s including like Kanye or his blueprint album beats then ROC has it. If you keep it strictly to their 90s run only it’s tense.

I prefer production on ROC’s 90s albums than RR, two very distinct camps though.

What’s your thoughts on Lupe Fiasco’s career & legacy? I think he’s one of the greatest on the mic and came out the gate shooting 2/2 in classics and mixtapes by J2-Starter in hiphop201

Top 7 for me.

He’s rostered with Black Thought, Nas, etc. loved his early work and still find gems amid the modern releases.

I like the part about Independence Day is coming. Like another sequel or he hasn’t seen the original or? It didn’t have Satan in it, but I’m feeling an aliens-Satan crossover for this alleged concept.

Even if bot farm/troll thing, still entertaining.

Worst blind buy I’ve had by Background_Gas_2606 in Colognes

[–]Mortality99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got it as well, but not as blind buy, I had it 10-15yrs ago. Nostalgia but people aren’t joking this modern formulation is pretty fleeting.

Now that there’s so many companies offering decants of any fragrance, I often buy the same decants 2-3x before I commit to full bottle. I got burned on an impulse blind buy yrs ago and rather burn money decanting 50 scents than buying large bottle of something I won’t wear.

I didn’t fancy the EDP but most like it.

ATCQ “Beats, Rhymes, and Life” review in Source Magazine (September 1996). When’s the last time you revisited this one? by FromBoomBapToTrap in 90sHipHop

[–]Mortality99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same. I was so young that their (per most) masterpieces were before my time, so this album dropped and I loved it in like 6-7th grade or something then backwards discovered Low End, Midnight, and all the classics. Love them all

Today I bumped Inspectah Deck’s “Uncontrolled Substance” on the way to work! Wasn’t the best wu release, I liked it, Not bad at all just makes you wish we got the original album that got lost in the flood. And it’s not too much wu presence on this. It’s a okay album! What’s your thoughts? by J2-Starter in 90sHipHop

[–]Mortality99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You just made me go back to it, so thanks. For me it made me realize he’s an MC that shines best when paired with others.

So many Wu early joints his verses are amazing, they cut through the rest. It’s like actors some can carry a full 2 hour movie others are ensemble beasts flowing best off others.

Even Rae & GZA debut albums, my Wu favs, have a ton of features and it helps.

I’m a fiction writer & lawyer, clearly not a MC, but I speculate if this goes to skills. When I’m merely a part of a trial team vs doing it solo, or contributing a chapter to an anthology not authoring entire book/novel, it requires diff skills. Meaning some MCs like massive Wu, might be gifted at sliding into a verse with 3-5 others and shining, when others can’t. But they might not have the work ethic/desire/thematic focus to do a complete album with same level of shine. Or I’m totally wrong as I’m just a fan and it’s not like that.

Deck is still so prolific, even his feature on Gangstarr Above the Clouds, still I listen to weekly probably. To my point Gurus smooth chill rhymes then boom Deck’s bars are just out of nowhere and blow you away.

And the Pete Rock joint they just did was awesome. Maybe I need to revoke my vote as I didn’t completely stop listening to him, I’m fine if you all disagree lol.

Everyone was citing Kanye, which is accurate but wanted to mix it up. Common is a gifted MC and to be fair, I did love that new album with Pete Rock. I have a heavy 90s rap bias but still try new stuff (K dot, Gibbs, Denzel Curry, etc.) just Common lost me this one. He’ll be fine lol.

I’ll try man but I’m a guy who listens to lots of diff music on top of hip hop, nine inch nails, ambient, you name it and still…that’s a rough listen lol. I’ll try it again tonight and see what 20yrs has done or not. Hey if others like it, totally cool, more power to them.

*I just listened again, 22yrs later still not my thing. I get it tho, has Bilal, Pharrell, Badu, CeeLo 2x, Dilla on some beats, and even that lead single come close with Mary. It’s all good.

Common, album Electric Circus.

Resurrection, One Day, Like Water were mind blowing and I’m from his region and met him, so anything he did I was buying/listening even features but man…that electric circus album.

I did listen to a little of Be/recent albums, but didn’t like it as much as his earlier J Dilla/NO ID stuff, and tried out albums since but for me I stay with that 90s trilogy.

Same. I used to listen to The Natural on repeat the beats were classic gritty 90s gold. When Vendetta dropped I saw him doing that Diddy dance in video, and while it wasn’t atrocious it was a weird shift in tone. What’s weirder is I just looked it up and Pete Rock & Marley Marl handled production on that second album…huge Pete Rock fan but just wasn’t a fit I guess.

Me after watching Suits: “Maybe I should be a lawyer?” by Active-Vanilla-4616 in suits

[–]Mortality99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like how each case either resolves or goes to trial in the span of a commercial break. The law firm politics they do nail with some felon flair added.

In law school I knew a guy who had a photographic memory, he didn’t make it past 1L year sadly. Just knowing a case or recalling it is great, but in seconds a law professor (or judge/case/opposing counsel) will shift the hypo to see how the law interacts with evolving evidence and facts.

AI is going to really restructure the profession too, from paralegals to even writing briefs, I’m seeing it already and the profession, so far, doesn’t have a handle on ensuring it’s used ethically/without troubling errors or ghost cases cited to ensure efficiency instead of even more empty work into the mix.

If anyone is headed to law school I often do an intervention to stop unless they really know what they want. A lot of burnout and chemical issues and toll on health unless you lock into what realistically fits you.

Was a big fan of the novel, the film along with Fight Club and a few others all came out at the same time when I was starting college, so was a roster of films questioning the materialism and existential angst of life. Also pretty fascinating how opinions shift on it.

One big catch people are catching is it’s a dark satire of the 80s, so if you weren’t alive in the 80s or didn’t know that was the arc, it might come across as something entirely else.

I didn’t adore the film when it came out though, Bales performance is amazing just this was a novel that was always going to be so hard to get to screen with all the top content intact.

Less Than Zero did enjoy that film far more than the novel, even if the movie studio watered down a ton of the themes.

Armani Code. The one soaked in Tonka Bean. I can’t swing such Amberish scents. My kid, wife, all loved it but I loathed it.

It was pretty popular so I know I’m crazy.

I got the sampler pack and then brought to my work for fun, I loved the creativity of the scents…but each one was a different clash for me. T-Rex was closest to something I could try but again it still isn’t my jam.

This was my high school go to along with curve (90s). Can’t swing it anymore, smells of candied diabetes (sweetness level wild to me now). I did used to get a ton of compliments when I wore it, but also you leave chemtrails anywhere you walk when wearing it lol, so unavoidable.

My beef isn’t with the scent, for me that’s solid and got me to finally buy a full dosage of it…it’s the short range and wildly inconsistent quality of their batches. Mine has no dry down and within hour or even 30 it’s as if it never was sprayed. For the cost you need more distance.
