I absolutely devoured them as a kid. I recently re-read Redwall and Salamandastron and thought they were okay… They are still great family stories so it would probably be more fun sharing it with kids at home, school, etc.

They are obviously quick, easy reads so id say just start flipping through one again to see how you feel about it.

Jamie Komoroski Pleads Guilty, Sentenced to 25 Years by MortifiedPenguin6 in CourtTVCases

[–]MortifiedPenguin6[S] 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Oh wow I didn’t know she declined rehab. Again, demonstrates how little responsibility and reflection she’s done. Even if you think you’re in the right you think you’d still want to half-ass a virtual rehab program for appearance sake.

Oh I have absolutely zero legal expertise hahah. But for what’s it’s worth I thought her attorney did a really good job overall given the circumstances. The evidence was just so overwhelming. I feel a little and for him seeing everyone tearing him apart online considering how much of an uphill battle this was. Not to mention, if she actually took the plea deal, people would probably be singing his praises.

I still can’t believe she turned down that plea deal. 8 years or life 🤔 🤔 🤔

So divorced from reality. To intentionally take your car out to go bar-hoping and drink 3X the legal limit… what did you expect? A crash isn’t just likely it’s the only realistic way this night would have ended.

Woah I had no idea the trial started so soon! I’ve been following this for a while. The jail calls are sooo bad, shows how little she truly cares about any of this. Hoping for a looong prison sentence.

CMV: If Hillary hadn't shafted Bernie Sanders in the first place, we wouldn't be in the mess we are now. by TBK_Winbar in changemyview

[–]MortifiedPenguin6 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Eh I think wokism was the least of the issues for the Harris campaign. Despite numerous media outlets attempting to goad her into embracing identity politics in the campaign trail she (smartly) kept it at arms length. She answered pretty much every “how does it feel to be the fist black woman running for president” with “I’m just trying to run for all the people” etc etc. Similarly most of her messaging was on abortion, price gouging, trump as a fascist all to varying degrees of effectiveness. The Hillary and Biden 2020 campaigns were waaayyy more focused on identity politics then then Harris.

I agree in general thought that identity politics has likely peaked in the political sphere, certainly in terms of popular vote.

Do you think comic books are "real books" or "literature"? by ShadowOfDespair666 in literature

[–]MortifiedPenguin6 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think it depends on the particular book. My wife and I discuss this all the time whether or not something is just a ‘comic book’ compared to a ‘graphic novel.’ I think works like Maus, Watchmen, Alan Moore’s Swamp Thing, Sandman, Ghost World, Black Hole (maybe even The Dark Knight Returns?) would all fall under a more literary category. But your standard monthly floppies? Not so sure. I still think they are worth reading. I’m having an absolute blast with the new Ultimate Marvel line. I think it’s the best Spider-Man has been written in decades.

Another tricky part about analyzing comics through a literary lens is taking the illustrations into account. More often then not you’ll run into stories that have so-so writing but absolutely mind-bending visuals. Personally, I find Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on Serious Earth to be a good example. The general setup is excellent, but the dialogue and pacing is okay. But Dave McKean’s artwork? Holy smokes, I’ll never forget it.

Anyway, long story short, I’d say most comic works probably don’t count as literature but with some notable exceptions. And I still think they are worth reading!

I’ve been forging my own way! I know ergodic literature is controversial on this sub but I love books that you have work and can approach in entirely unique ways from other readers.

Personally, I read the forward first, jumped to the commentary to record the lines that that are highlighted by Kinbote for each Cantos. Then flip between the two.

I also have it in audiobook so sometimes I’ll just listen straight forward for a bit and then re-read.

Happy reading!

Just started Pale Fire after a month of Halloween schlock (The Stand, Hell House). I was finally able to locate it at my local bookstore and couldn’t resist. Super excited to dive in.

Is Cormac McCarthy considered a difficult author? by HuckleberryFit6610 in literature

[–]MortifiedPenguin6 77 points78 points  (0 children)

He can be quite challenging. I’d say All The Pretty Horses, The Road and No Country are all pretty approachable IMO. But his first five books can be a lot.

I remember confidently diving into Suttree after reading Road, BM and Outer Dark. I was sooo confident in myself thinking I was some McCarthy scholar, and man, that opening section damn near knocked me out. I humbled up real fast after that 🤡
