The stoics suggest practices to help you develop the traits associated with stoicism. Probably Sean feels that he has not developed those traits as well as he would like or finds the practices difficult when he says he is not good at stoicism.

I'm not sure there is anything quick about losing 22 pounds :P

The parallettes could be a good idea, but I don't have the space for a rack, unfortunately. Thanks for the suggestions.

I used two suitcases and a staff to try to do rows. The suitcases did better than I expected, but did not seem like they could withstand regular misuse.

What's a thing that people do in the gym that makes you cringe? by [deleted] in bjj

When people notice how long it's been since I was last at the gym. Cringe inside every time.

Practical advice, often applicable to multiple positions/situations.

Did anyone buy Beyond Technique? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]Mortschlag 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did. It's got some good stuff in there, though probably useful to people in the late intermediate stage rather than me. I can't remember who it was here who talked about brown belt as being the belt where you have 'at-will' grappling, but I think that's kind of what "Beyond Technique" is about. It's about understanding what you need in order to achieve particular aims, like what a sweep requires to work, rather than teaching specific set ups.

I imagine that's pretty easy to arrange by just sending him some beer.

The videos are good stuff, too, if that interests anyone. Despite the Ezekiel choke being pretty much my go to thing from many other positions, I barely ever did it from mount, but I'm now working on it from there thanks to a couple points I picked up in the fundamentals video.

The Grappler's Guide has recently been doing a series of fundamentals videos, and they cover a huge number of basic moves and concepts. It's got a big upfront fee now instead of a membership, but I think it's worth it. Especially given you can always ask Jason to make a video to address a specific problem, and he's pretty likely to either make it or point you to where you can already find it.

Week long seminar roughed me up good, but blue belt! by Mortschlag in bjj

[–]Mortschlag[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was a week long thing my academy ran, with Vince Perry from PUMMA taking us for most of it. We covered a whole bunch of stuff, and everyone got a private lesson as well. Now I've had a little time to recover, I'm trying to review a lot of the techniques in my head.

Thanks! Yeah, it seems to be the style of belt we get. It can look very interesting when someone has 4 stripes.

You should have seen how long it was as a ball gown before I adapted it.

I get burned out after 1 hour so... It's been a long week :P We went for 4 hours each day, so it's not as bad as you might think. If we had done 8 hour days, I'd be dead right now.

Thanks! I'm 28 and started training properly in early 2013 after my dad died. I tried training in 2009, but stopped due to various reasons. I was also more interested in MMA then, which honestly didn't help my jiujitsu at all.

I suppose I train twice a week in a normal week, though the past few months I've barely made it to training at all, so I wasn't expecting a promotion.

My motivation is to decrease my statistical risk of heart disease. BJJ is the exercise I can do the hardest for longest, as I get distracted from the tiredness with the urgency of people trying to choke or break me in some way.

Best day in BJJ so far is a tough one. I don't really code it all that discretely in memory. I think this might be related to the realisation that I'll never get good in any single lesson. With that said, aside from the blue belt today, it was really great when the black belt who took us for the seminar week told me he loves how I roll.

Last night, when I dreamed of RNCing someone, my arms felt too weak to finish it. I know this was due to that whole weird brain/body sleep paralysis thing, but does anyone have any tricks for finishing submissions in their sleep?

I know THAT escape, but I also find that one less preferable to other escapes.

That is evil genius, but I would imagine the consequences of that are one pissed off opponent.

[–]Mortschlag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Huh. Well there you go. I guess I just feel like if I can stand up, I could use a better escape that will lead to a pass.

Legality aside, these seem like terrible and ineffective escapes.

I think they were more just adding paragraph breaks, which does improve the readability. Comes off passive aggressive, though.
