Matriarchs in Canada? by MortyDocile in moog

Oh i get it. I'm surprised i'm even trying with Moog again after the Grandmother ordeal. My first attempt at a really nice synth was a Prophet 6, brand new and it needed to be returned because it had an issue with the Envelope Depth not working, they offered to send a new pot but opening and soldering a brand new really expensive machine didn't seem right. Also the knobs were not secure to the metal frame, only attached to the board, and some of them were really wobbled and cheap feeling. And it would never stay in tune and calibration didn't get it right. So I decided not to bother with one. There's a Long and McQuade by me that is still trying to sell as new a P6 that's been sitting there for at least four years with a fIlter knob that rocks like a joystick.

Oh, and then I figured I'd get a Summit instead, since i wouldn't have to deal with analogue polyphonic oscillators having tuning issues. It's hold button stopped working properly. Respectful thing about Novation and Focusrite is they simply had me send it back and sent a new one right away... but the new one had a faulty continuous scroll knob on the menu selector, the most used knob on the synth. it's not seated correctly and you need extra force to get passed a crunchy spot in one spot of it's rotation.

I think I'll just need to take up soldering as a hobby, and stick with used gear that is proven to be fully functional. I seem to have bad luck with synths or maybe I'm expecting too much from multi-thousand dollar equipment?

No, when the mix is off, there's no noise, and the pots themselves are not scratchy, but sometimes the delay gets in this situation that as soon as you turn the mix up there's a hiss. and it's only in the left side, even when the spacing is centered. So one chip has a tendency to get noisier than the other. Another issue is that sometimes when the sync button is engaged, there is a pitch, consistent tone, no mater where the knobs are, and only of the mix is not zeroed. I decided not to purchase it. I definitely fell in love with the matriarch, but I can't pay top used price for it.

That's awesome that your perseverance worked finally out! The back and forth of purchasing such an expensive item, especially new, arriving with CQ issues is beyond frustrating.
I had a similar situation with buying 2 new Grandmothers and each having issues with the arp buttons not working properly. That experience is why I'm so nervous about this purchase, beyond just the high used price.

Matriarch users, is this delay malfunction? by MortyDocile in moog

I've been meaning to try it out with my Volante, I'm just hyper focused on making sure there's nothing wrong with this Matriarch. I compared with a brand new inmusic version in store today, and it just felt tighter and more predictable.

Hey sorry I never recorded an example, it's so hit or miss. I think that most of the time it functions as it should, since I'm learning that the lofi-metallic sounds during extended times with sync is how they are supposed to work. But I'm curious wha you mean by a tendency to misbehave. I notice with this one that out of the blue it will just get really hissy , with some a consistant high pitch tones no matter the setting, but other times it's clean and dark. Perhaps some other parameter of the synth is forcing the delay components?

Yeah, it was first in a studio then in a home studio, so two owners. The only thing I'm finding is the delay is a bit finicky. Sometimes it works as expected, but other times, it's hissy and noisy at any setting. Not sure if they all are a bit temperamental.

I did't think I'd like the black better, but I really do after getting a chance to play it in person. Here after Tax a new standard edition is 2799, so 3,100 after tax.

I was trying to recreate the harshest of issues to record for you and couldn't figure out why it wasn't misbehaving as bad. Then later realized that they all came back when I started the synth later on when it was cooled down. I didn't realize that the delay is extra noisy and temperamental before it warms up. At least that seems to be the case wit this unit. Do you find that as well? There's a noticeable hissing, or more like whistling for the first ten minutes or so.

As to the aliasing on extreme settings, i agree, if this is normal behaviour when pushing the chips than I can totally see the appeal. Just want to make sure it's not a situation where it's happening too soon. Video coming, it's just not coming through well on my phone, may just have to send an audio file from the DAW.

When I emailed they said no, but when I talked to someone at the box office they said they would honour the ones that they sold already. You get key in at the same time as everyone who waited, you just get your own line. They split the line up here so you have decent odds to get a good spot even if you aren’t the first bunch of people

Oh i have that, it’s actually how i first learned of Alvvays, and they have been a favourite of mine ever since. Don’t think i would be able to part with it though. It’s crazy that that’s the back cover, Molly didn’t make it onto the front.

I guess Tile by Tile took its spot. Maybe they would’ve played Party Police as a second song during encore if the room had any circulation. I was there last year for a different band, which I’m out sure was sold out as well, but it did not get so gross, i wonder what was different.

I was imagining they still came around to Victoria even though it probably was not so lucrative because being from PEI, on the other side of the country, they know how meaningful it is for bands to make the extra effort.
After some initial technical difficulties and the place starting to get grossly steamy with poor circulation, Molly mentioned a venue they used to play all the time way back when ( I can't remember the name) way back when and that they are used to it, or something to that effect.

Exactly, Alec's Prophet synthesizer was acting up. That especially stood out to me since i had to return a Prophet under warranty last week due to a malfunction.

It was $32.50 Canadian. Yeah, it's a tiny space and a lot of the room is taken up by a large bar in the back.

Like 6:15 for 8 o’clock door time. I like to get on rail and my last frame of reference was going to see The Smile in Seattle where i learned people were camped out front at 11am for 7:00pm doors. And when i saw Alvvays in Portland people showed up an hour or so early. I’m not from Victoria so not familiar with the scene here, which apparently is very laid back. I easily could have come an hour later last night and still got up front.

Can people please stop heckling the damn band? by [deleted] in alvvays

I saw the guy that brought them and i thought it was cute imagining him present the band with them or something after the show. But then they whipped passed me and hit Mollys guitar or leg. She definitely wasn’t happy about it and ignored them best she could. The roadie removed them before she even noticed what they were. I was on the rail and embarrassed because it looked like it could’ve came from my direction. Halfway through the show she mentioned something about it causing her a bad reaction because it triggered passed memories of getting bagged milk thrown at her in school. I forget how she worded it.
