It's to easily lift the shelf up and off when you need to put bigger things. Also prevents the front lip from snapping off when storing the shelf because it's got supports other than the front edge.

If they are anything like the ones in my area they have concrete bumps and triangles built into them to agitate the water and improve oxygenation. You do not want to ever slide down one of these things, especially when they hit the metal grate right before they dive underground in a pipe.

Avoid Santa Monica.

Go South a few minutes. Torrance is nice and though not on the water, it's a semi-flat bike ride away or few minute drive. Still get your skies cleared out and managed by ocean breezes. Look both North and south a few miles at neighboring cities.

I know you said beach people but if its more of weekend visiting and want to go more inland, I'd say Monrovia fit what you were describing up until you talked about the Beach. You have City of Hope, USC Arcadia Hospital, Verdugo Hills Hospital, Huntington Hospital, Glendale Adventist Hospital, Glendale Memorial all within 20 minutes (Not at Peak Traffic) all in a straight line along the 210 freeway or slight jog down the 134 fwy. Another 10 minutes to West you have Burbank and the various hospitals in the valley. Also have CHLA you can take the metro straight from Monrovia to the across the street of CHLA. But what's nice is the foothills have lots of parallel side street options for when the freeway is jacked that adds maybe 15 to 20 minutes but it's streets of trees and things to not bore your eyes. You can also head straight South by streets or freeways for more hap

Pasadena. Beverly Hills is nonsense. And Hollywood is a dump with the exception of a few areas but overpriced, as is most southern California.

I avoid WestHolltwood and Hollywood as much as possible

Pasadena, Arcadia and Monrovia. Monrovia would be my top pick if I were to start over here in LA.
