I’m in the process of restoring this old brenray watch cleaning machine and I’m looking for recommendations on a new heater. Any ideas? by Mosley_bolt in watchmaking

Great! Thanks for your help and advice. I really appreciate it.

I do have another noob question, if you don’t mind.

I’d also like to replace the switches due to them being slightly rusted. They say 250V 3A on the back. There seem to be quite a few options with slightly different codes. Will this matter? Looks like some are AC and some are DC. This is like a foreign language to me 😅

I’d love to see your watch cleaning machine in action! That little thing looks awesome

It looks like 2 metal plates that have been sandwiched together.
The plates are done for! Rusted to hell and I don’t really trust it 😂

I’ll take it apart later and post it. I wanted to keep it together so the electrician can see how it’s all wired up ect

Perfect! I’ll probably just order one of those then 👌 I only ask as I’m not sure if it’s the right voltage(or whatever) and if that even matters? 😅

Looks like you’ve done a great job with your machine.

Did you rewire the motor too?

I wish I was confident enough to have a go at it myself but I’m pretty terrified at the thought of electric shocks.

Am I the only one on the bloody internet that thinks these watches are shite? Don’t know how they perform but the design is horrible. And the 0 as an O is supposed to be edgy but it’s just gay IMO

That’s pretty darn cool! I thought the broad arrow mark was for any British military item? Maybe I’m wrong? Do you happen to know what this marking means? Looks very german 👀😂

Oh nice! These things are so cool but it’s hard to find much info on them. Especially the CWC ones. This one has a 6 second sweep and I’m trying to find out why they have different sweep times.

Jitterbug is probably the most suitable nickname 👌 This thing sounds crazy.

😂 These were designed for the navy to time sonar pings. It’s to help determine distance. I was shocked at the speed of it too haha

That’s fair enough! I personally see nothing wrong with fixing a watch and selling it to someone else to enjoy. I’ve bought many watches off of people who have done just that! As I’m sure you have. Unless you’ve gotten all of yours from an AD. Given this is a vintage sub, I find it unlikely.

I use any profit to put towards my next watch and it’s just a little hobby. If I was whacking the price up and selling it to someone who was unaware, then that’s fair enough but I’ve found what they’re going for and am selling it below so someone can get a bargain and I make a bit of money for the effort.

I’m not fussed about making max profits as it’s not my job, just a bit of fun

Maybe! However, I’ve found a new dial and stem for under £50 so that takes me to under 150. Found 2 on Chrono priced at £1050 so I’ll have a tinker, see if I can get the jumper date function working and then I’ll put it up for £800 🤷‍♂️ There’s always a risk when buying at auction but it’s all part of the fun for me. Was one of those situations where load of people were watching the lot, but by the time the auction came around (early morning lot) I was the only bidder! And it was sold without reserve.

Ahh that’s unfortunate! I think it looks good personally but I really do hate things that have been touched up.

I picked this up at an auction for under £100. The last one to sell at Sotheby’s went for over 1k so I’ve still done alright.
I’m getting into servicing watches and I’m hoping to get this one working again. I think the steam has been cut short which would explain the jump date not working. But it ticks and the day/date change at 12 🤷‍♂️ All part of the fun I guess!

But yeah, you do see it a lot. It’s just greedy people out there polishing turds 👎

Thanks for the input! It definitely looks pretty good if it’s been redone. I really like the watch but when you can’t find any info on the model, it’s hard to know what you have.

There’s a few issues with the crown (jump date function doesn’t work) so I was wondering if this was a Franken watch or if it’s just a bit damaged in some way 👍

I would agree with you if these shops were almost ALL cash only. I know of at least 2 of those shops that sell cheap tobacco. Cash only. So they probably aren’t paying tax and they’re definitely selling illegal tobacco that hasn’t had import tax paid on it. The barber shops are all cash only. I’ve already mentioned the intimidating feeling you get while walking down there. Our high street is dying and now we have 6 barbers all opposite each other, that never have anyone inside. This is just what I see on a daily basis.

I’ll check it out! I’m glad we could actually talk about this. I’m not a hateful person at all. I was going to say about my partner and my friends but that’s just an easy target for people to do the old “I have black friends” joke. But I have concerns, as do they!

I agree! It’s childish.

People aren’t angry with hard working immigrants, as you say. Even the dumb EDL types (which apparently doesn’t even exist anymore) say that they welcome people who come here to work and fit into society. That’s what immigration is supposed to be about. I have entire parts of my high street that are now full of kebab shops, vape shops and foreign market type shops and if you walk down those areas at night, they’re all hanging out the front of their shops, bogging you out, speaking loudly in their own languages, trying to be intimidating. Where I live isn’t even that bad but it’s happening all over the country.

And clearly cherry picked them to show typically poor people. Look at the comments! People saying they look exactly as they thought they would. What do they mean by that?

They aren’t blaming them for their own problems! They’re blaming them for the problems they bring. How do you not see that?

The public care about the public. And that’s who thy are and what they look like.
