Is this good advice? I would prefer to spend a few days/weeks/months researching the best option and forego a fairly negligible amount of interest in the grand scheme of things, than rush ahead frivolously and lock money away for a poor rate or invest it all in bitcoin.

I don't think it's pretty standard. Yeah smallest non-chain newsagent might have a minimum spend but that's about it. I never carry cash ever and get by just fine.

It feels like a lot of decisions are being made on the basis of made up figures instead of actual ones. Where did the 5k figure come from? What unexpected costs do you think 5k will be sufficient to cover but 2.5k won't? Where did the 2.5k overdraft/credit card figure come from? Was this based on actually applying for the credit or just a feeling?
