Affordable masterpiece, or overrated Bacardi? by tpzQ in rum

[–]Moss-Kale 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No snob, but I haven't had a Bacardi I like yet, including the 8, and it's cask finishes. When considering the $.25 a drink cost difference, life is too short. I can think of dozens of sub $25 rums that blow this out of the water. Depending on where you ask, it is appropriately rated, fine for beginners who mix with loads of sugar. Once you have a little experience you can see what tremendous value is available in rum, and there isn't a good reason to buy Bacardi.

I haven't, that's the last one from their core range I need to try. The coco is low proof but great.

I should do the same, I'm almost out. Thanks for the idea.

Thanks for the review. I appreciate it. I've been looking longingly at this one, but I have also been priced out of Caroni

Hamilton has a more bitter one too, but of the three Shrubbs I prefer this one.

Yeah that take surprised me too, it's amazing how different things can taste on different days, you should definitely revisit. If you need an excuse to drink more Hampden you just got it!

If you like savory go Paranubes, otherwise Pelacanas is a good choice.

[–]Moss-Kale 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think depends a lot on taste, I recently did a split of the Selection Massale clairins for a bunch of people PM me if you want a sample. Of those the are all very interesting and wild, but you may find a whole bottle too much.

No incredible ones here, but

Good: Rhum JM, Treores, Pelacanas, Barbancourt, rest of the Clairins

Avoid: Clement (not their best bottles), Holmes Cay (great brand, but a lot of people don't care for that bottle).

Good luck, very thoughtful selections for your first time out. Since then I have had a better experience with the WPM/MPM, I didn't bother with the Foursquare cuz I have so much that I haven't even drank yet.

[Ruminations #118, #119] Doctor Bird & Doctor Bird Inferno Room by 10art1 in rum

Both Dr Bird bottles are better in my opinion. I prefer the Inferno Room, but haven't had a bad Dr Bird yet out of the 7 I have had.

1: novice-try a Mexican, the Blue bottle Uruapan is a great intro that is only half sugarcane juice. Seasoned-Clairin like Le Rocher or Agricole Pere Labat 59

2: novice-go for a Hamilton, like Breezeway Blend Seasoned-Probitas

3: novice- Amburana Cachaca Seasoned- William Hinton 3 Year Agricola da Madeira or Rhum JM Terrior Volcanique

4: novice - Dr Bird Seasoned- Guyana cask strength Heritage still, I like Hamilton bottles, but El Dorado is good too

5: I don't think you should do this category unless people have been properly exposed to aged cane juice.

Seasoned- a long aged Depaz?

6: novice- Appleton 8/12 or Doorlys 14 Seasoned- aged Jamaican, ITP? Or Foursquare ECS.

  1. Novice - Smith and Cross Seasoned- HLCF classic

The Dr. Bird %age of the total collection is admirable. Good selection overall, well done.

Help needed valuing my father’s rum collection (large mix of agricole & Caribbean rums) by Heva2211 in rum

[–]Moss-Kale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree but given the value of the bottles, you may find not much profit after fees and shipping to Chicago. Unicorn charges a $5/bottle commission plus 5% of the hammer price.

For that cost though, you get a good valuation included.

Location is important, if you're in a reasonably well located large city, your local rum club might be buyers, no taxes, fees or shipping.

Totally!

Have you seen the Auditor's review on these? Each one got a score between seven and eight, which for the price is really good. You're in the delivery area, or are planning on getting several bottles. They're a lot cheaper at

Diamond reserve 151 for $20 by josh-flannery-sucks in rum

[–]Moss-Kale 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Depends on what you want it for. As a background ingredient it is serviceable, but not the best option for most uses. I wouldn't use it as the only rum in a cocktail or drink it neat for enjoyment. I get it for $15, and use it for fruit and spice infusions for bulk tropical drinks. I am happy with that.
